Chapter 30: Things Changed

Narrator's POV

Lauren knew Camila's answer before she asked her. Although Lauren knew Camila would not agree to be her girlfriend, she still asked her. Although she knew Camila would reject her, she still felt disappointed. Although she had marked Camila, and they had mated, Camila still rejected her. The reason Lauren asked Camila was to communicate her intention to Camila. She wanted to make Camila aware that her feeling and desire for her was real. 

The rejection was predictable and expected, but it was still hard to take and made Lauren distressed. She could not hide her feelings after being rejected. The nights they spent, the kisses they shared, and the desire they had for each other led to nothing. She should have known that Camila surrendered to her for two reasons: Camila wanted to do something in return because Lauren had saved her life and Camila could not resist the seduction. It was not the way that Lauren wanted but she did it anyway. As a result, she had to accept the rejection. 

On the other hand, Camila did not know rejecting someone could be so hurting. She surely knew the taste of being rejected, but she did not know rejecting someone could be this hurt. She rejected some but she never felt so bad. Camila did not expect Lauren would ask her to be her girlfriend. She only knew what Lauren wanted from her was sex and fun. She did not even know what Lauren meant by asking her to be her girlfriend when Lauren was in a relationship with Alexa regardless of what kind of their relationship was.

"Yeah..." Camila answered when Lauren asked her if it was because of Alexa that she rejected Lauren. "One of the reasons..."

Lauren took a slow deep breath to calm herself down.  She was new to this unbearable feeling. She knew she had to end things with Alexa if she wanted to have Camila. She also could not tell Camila that she would end things with Alexa because Camila would disagree. Camila surely would oppose Lauren leaving Alexa to be with her. Camila would not want to be a person who broke another's relationship.

"What are the other reasons?" Lauren asked.

Camila was speechless, looking at Lauren. It was not that she did not know why she rejected Lauren. She knew why but she did not have the heart to tell Lauren all the reasons she could not be her girlfriend. She could not imagine the look on Lauren's face if she told Lauren all the reasons. "I don't know..." Camila was getting anxious, "I just can't..." Lauren frowned, causing Camila to feel discomfort, "I don't know, Lauren! I just can't...I have a lot on my plate these days."

"Okay, I understand." Lauren tried to smile. She did not like seeing Camila getting anxious. "I'm just trying my luck." Lauren looked away from Camila's eyes. She did not want Camila to see her soul which was so fragile and vulnerable after being rejected by her Luna. 

"Lauren, I'm sorry...I can't..." Camila just could not see the saddened green eyes. 

Lauren did not want Camila to feel sorry for that. She chuckled to make it easy for Camila, "It's okay! I know you won't agree." Lauren squeezed Camila's hand. "I have some work left to finish. You can get back to your room or read something in the library, and I will see you at dinner time." Lauren stood up and went to her desk. She took the documents and continued reading.

"Okay..." Camila said in a small voice.

Camila looked at Lauren once before she left Lauren's study room, giving Lauren and herself some space to process what just happened separately. She went to her room and spent the rest of the afternoon there digesting and processing everything that happened these days. Lauren had expected the outcome so she did not lose herself in the rejection. She continued doing her work which was also a good distraction. Meanwhile, Camila could not stop thinking about what happened.
