Chapter 54

Later that night
Colby's POV

After we ate dinner, the dogs were fed but Finn didn't eat.

We knew it was coming close by his body language.

He was weak and flopped down on the floor, he would lay by the back door and refused food.

We were all sitting in the living room watching him.

"When do you think he'll go?" Gunnar asked from beside me.

"I'm not sure bud, but just spend as much time with him as you can" I said and he nodded at me.

He and the triplets went over and sat on the floor next to him.

"He wants to go so bad, but he wants to live so bad" Maddie said.

"I know" Y/n told her.

"I just- I feel like I should be more emotional but it's like I can't" Ryker said.

I apologized to him earlier about the whole thing with Jay. I lashed out on him and it wasn't his fault, so we were normal now.

"And that's okay. Finn has been your buddy since you were born, your in shock" I said.

"I'm just glad he made it this far" he said and I nodded.

The four of walked out and sat down around him too.

Chance and Diesel were by the fireplace, not moving.

"Hey there baby Finn. You may not be little anymore but in my eyes, your still my little puppy, my best friend" Ryker said and his voice started to break.

"Finn boy. You are one good dog y'know? You're the best actually. First dog I ever had" Gunnar said.

"Were gonna miss you buddy but your home now" he added.

"I remember the day mom brought you guys home. I was so excited to see a pup for the first time that was my own. We got to have you in this family and I love you Finn" Maddie said and she kissed the fur on his neck.

"Hey my little forest puppy" Y/n said.

"Your here with Gypsy, I know she wants you running around with her in doggy heaven" she said, her voice breaking as well.

I rubbed her back softly.

"It's okay, I know your tired... you can go now" she said.

We watched as Finn took his last breaths and licked Ryker's hand before closing his eyes.

The triplets were crying and my face definitely felt heated.

I put a hand on Finn's chest and nodded.

"He's gone" I said.

Ryker broke down completely and buried his face in Finn's fur.

Y/n got up and walked away with the triplets.

"Gunnar, come help me out back" I said and he nodded slowly.

We went and got shovels before heading into the backyard.

It wasn't super dark, only sun down and a good amount of light gave us the time to dig his grave.

Ryker came out with Finn in a blanket and I took him from his arms.

I laid finn down in the hole and Ryker sat at the edge.

Chance and Diesel trotted outside and sniffed towards the hole.

Diesel whispered and I rubbed his ear as he sat at my feet.

"Y'all go on inside, I'll finish this up" I said.
