The next day
Duke's POV

"I don't see why you can't play?" My coach said.

Maddie, Ryker and I had come down at practice to let him know I wouldn't be playing the game that starts in 5 hours.

"Don't you realize that he was stabbed? His lung was punctured, he cannot play" Maddie argued.

"Maddie is carrying this game. Otherwise... you will lose" I said.

"I can't have a girl carry our team" he said.

"God, you are so sexist for no reason" Ryker said under his breath but I heard.

"Come on coach, just give me a chance. If we lose, kick me off. You know I'm good at soccer. I can do this" Maddie pleaded.

"Alright fine, but I want you in the bleachers, not down here. We can't have you distracting the only other best player" he said and pointed at me.

"You got it" I said and smiled as we started to walk away.

"Hey Orsino!" Coach called and we stopped to turn around.

"Wait here" I told the two before walking to him.

"Coach" I said.

"I'm sorry about your injury... how are you healing?" He asked.

"I'm healed on the inside and almost on the outside. Pain isn't really an issue for me right now" I told him and he nodded.

"Alright. Get back in the game soon ok? The team needs you and Brock together for progress" he told me.

"Give me a week tops" I said and he sent me a thumbs up as I walked to catch up with Maddie and Ryker.

"Hey Duke, I heard about what happened. I'm so sorry you had to go through that" Sadie walked up to me and said.

"Uh yeah, me too" I said blankly and continued walking.

Sadie ran in front of me and put her hands on my shoulders. Ryker and Maddie looked at me funny and I widened my eyes.

"Duke- wait. Would you wanna leave and go get lunch or something?" She asked.

"I really wouldn't like to have to put my hands on a pregnant girl" Maddie said as she stood next to us.

"It's good, goodbye Sadie. And would you please stop trying to talk to me?" I asked but didn't wait for a response.

We walked away and Ryker shook his head.

"Why is she so clingy like that? She cheated on you with Dalton, she's having his baby, she needs to chill" he said.

"Tell me about it" I muttered.

As soon as we walked into the building, the bell rang for 5th period and we went our separate ways.

The three of us were all in different years. Im finishing up junior year while Maddie is finishing sophomore and Ryker is finishing his freshman year.

I went up two flights of stairs and walked into my science class.

"Mr. Orsino, it's good to have you back. Everyone give a warm welcome to Duke" my science teacher, Mr. Wilson said.

The students clapped and I nodded before taking my seat.

"Welcome back, playing tonight?" My friend, Aaron asked.

Aaron and I have known each other since freshman year when he first moved here. Our dad's hated one another though.
