"Fine. You'll talk to him right?" Savanna asked, when Carter heard about what happened he offered to come talk to Eddie. Savanna was hesitant at first she didn't want Carter to do something that would put him back in a dark place but once the man assured her he was good and had people he was talking to she caved.
"When he wakes up," Carter confirmed.
"I should get Chris to school." Savanna sniffed standing up from the chair and grabbing her car keys.
Eddie gasped as his eyes opened. "Coffee?" Carter questioned as he stood in front of Eddie.
"What time is it? Where's Savanna?" Eddie sat up.
"She and Buck took Chris to school so you could sleep, Bucks gonna take her for breakfast while they're at it." Carter told him.
"Mm.. sorry." Eddie rubbed his face before trying to stand up.
"Hey, hey, hey, it's all right. We got it handled." Carter assured him as he handed him a cup of coffee.
"Thanks." Eddie sighed sitting back down on the couch as Carter sat on the coffee table in front of him.
"After my first tour, I had nightmares for a long time. They say it's your mind's way of working through a traumatic experience." Carter told him, he'd had nightmares every time he came back from his tours, his first one was always the worst though.
He'll never forget waking up to blood dripping down his fist while Savanna banged on his door hysterically pleading to him to open the door.
"Kinda wish my mind would take a break." Eddie humorlessly laughed.
"It won't. Savanna told me about your friends. I'm very sorry."
Eddie cleared his throat, "Can't believe they're all gone. And I'm still here. I'm not sure why."
"That is a question you will never be able to answer. You can chalk it up to the grand plan of some higher power or just dumb luck. But either way, the result is the same: you are still here." Carter told him.
"I'm not sure what to do with that."
"You find a way to heal and to honor them even when it's hard even when you don't think you can."

"Happy birthday."
Savanna smiled at Kate as she sat down across from her. "Thank you, but my birthday isn't until tomorrow."
