The park bench creaked under the weight of a stunned silence. Mia's locket, held open between her trembling fingers, displayed a picture far too familiar to the man in the suit. It was a younger, goofier version of himself, hair a wilder shade of brown but the same mischievous glint in his eyes, a younger Jay Walker. Besides him stood a pretty looking girl with black hair.
And in the middle was the girl who claimed to be his sister.
"Jay..." the man breathed, his voice barely a whisper. "But... how?"
Sprite, sensing the shift in emotions, buzzed excitedly, flitting between them like a confused neon question mark. Mia, still processing the revelation, looked between the picture and the man.
"You... you don't remember?" she asked, her voice barely above a squeak.
The man shook his head, a lost expression clouding his features. "Nothing after the accident. It's like a giant gap in my memory. All I have are these... flashes. The car crash, the hospital, promising to protect you..."
He trailed off, his eyes welling up again. Mia, her heart clenching with newfound empathy, reached out and placed a comforting hand on his arm.
"It's okay," she whispered. "We'll figure this out together. Maybe the wind can help us unlock your memories."
The man, tears welling in his eyes, turned to face her. "You... you know who I am?"
Mia offered a small smile. "You're Jay Walker. Or at least, half of him. The other half is a lightning-wielding goofball who happens to be my brother."
The man, a conflicted mix of emotions playing on his face, looked down at his trembling hands. "A ninja?" he scoffed, a disbelieving chuckle escaping his lips. "That sounds ridiculous."
But even as he spoke, a flicker of recognition sparked in his eyes, a faint echo of a playful grin that mirrored the one in the picture. Perhaps, deep down, a part of him remembered.
Suddenly, a mischievous glint replaced the man's disbelief. He looked at Mia, a hint of a challenge in his voice. "Alright, wind ninja. Show me what this 'lightning' is all about."
----------------The weight of the revelation hung heavy in the air as they walked. Mia stole a glance at Jay, her brother, a stranger in a familiar face. "So," she finally started, her voice hesitant, "does this mean you, uh, like me as your sister?"
Jay shrugged, his gaze fixed ahead. "Sure," he mumbled, kicking a pebble down the path. "You're alright, I guess." It wasn't the warmest response, a stark contrast to the playful teasing she was used to.
Hesitantly, Mia pressed on. "Alright? Really?" This wasn't the Jay who would spend hours regaling her with stories, embellishing every detail for maximum comedic effect. This Jay was...distant.
He scoffed, a humorless sound. "Seriously, Mia. You could tone down the whole 'perpetual-chipper' routine. It gets old after a while." These were words Mia had never heard escape his lips before. The playful teasing had always been affectionate, a sign of their bond. This felt like a deliberate jab.
Mia's smile faltered, replaced by a dull ache in her chest. "Oh," she managed, her voice barely a whisper. Maybe a part of him did remember, but it wasn't the good parts.
They walked in silence for a while longer, the newfound distance stretching between them like a chasm. Finally, Mia forced a small smile. "Okay," she said, her voice tight. "I'll pick you up tomorrow. There are people who want to see you."
She watched him disappear around the corner, the image of his retreating form imprinted on her heart. As soon as he was out of sight, the dam broke. Tears streamed down Mia's face, a silent torrent of grief and confusion. How could her brother, her best friend, be so cold?
