Ever since that day when Jay recharged the Hydro Bounty's battery, Mia had been feeling.... Off.
Then again, she thought it was a cold at first.
But colds don't make your arms get all these bruises.
So she started wearing longer sleeves because, in her defense, she was cold.
But Jay saw through it. He knew his sister wouldn't be cold in the middle of summer.
So one day, after another dinner with long sleeves, Jay marched to Mia's room and opened the door.
" Mia, we need to talk." He stated.
Mia, though startled, sat on the bed.
" Yes?"" Mia, what's going on. Why are you wearing long sleeves?"
" Because I'm cold."
" No, it's not. It's because of your arms, isn't it?"
Mia looked uncomfortable, but it was quickly masked by calmness. " No, I don't know what you're talking about."
" Mia, show me your arms."
Mia froze, and Jay's heart dropped.
" Mia."
" Jay, I... I just can't."
" Why not?"
When Mia didn't reply, Jay got more concerned. " Why, Mia?"
Mia looked down at her hands, avoiding Jay’s gaze. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her sleeve, twisting the fabric nervously. The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken tension.
"Mia," Jay said softly, trying to coax her out of her shell, "I’m your brother. You can tell me anything. Please, let me help you."
She finally looked up, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and shame. "Jay, I... I don’t know what’s happening to me." Her voice was barely above a whisper, and she tugged at her sleeves, pulling them tighter around her arms as if the fabric could shield her from the truth. "I thought it was just a cold, but... it’s not. I’ve been getting these bruises, and they don’t go away. And... I didn’t want anyone to worry."
Jay felt a pang of guilt for not noticing sooner. "Mia, you should’ve told me. We need to figure out what’s going on. This isn’t something you can just ignore."
Mia’s eyes welled up with tears, and she looked away, her voice shaky. "I didn’t want to bother you. You’ve been so busy with everything... And I thought maybe it would just go away on its own."
Jay shook his head, stepping closer and kneeling in front of her. "You’re never a bother, Mia. You’re my sister. I’ll always make time for you, no matter what. But you can’t keep this to yourself. We need to get you checked out."
She bit her lip, clearly torn between wanting to confide in him and her fear of what might be wrong. Finally, after a long moment, she slowly pulled up her sleeves, revealing the dark, angry bruises that covered her arms. Jay’s heart clenched at the sight. They were worse than he had imagined—dark purple and blue splotches that shouldn’t be there.
"Mia..." he breathed, unable to hide his shock. "How long have you had these?"
"A few weeks," she admitted, her voice barely audible. "I thought maybe it was just because I’ve been feeling weak, but... they’re getting worse, Jay. And it’s not just the bruises. I’m tired all the time, and sometimes I get dizzy."
Jay’s mind raced, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. He wasn’t a doctor, but he knew enough to recognize that this wasn’t something minor. "We need to get you to a doctor, Mia. Right away."
