" Annie!" Mia laughed, spitting water out. " Stop!"
Annie rolled her eyes. " Oh, come on! Loosen up!"
" I am loosened up!"
Annie raised a brow but didn't reply.
Mia sighed and splashed water on Annie.
" Hey!" Annie started chasing Mia, who was swimming away.
Jay, who was reading a magazine, put it down and eyed them. " Guys!" He laughed, shaking the water off him. " Stop!"
Mia laughed. " She started it!"
" Did not!"
Mia's laughter echoed across the water as she splashed away from Annie, her cheeks flushed with excitement. The sun was high, casting a golden glow over the water, making it sparkle as the two girls played.
Annie grinned, her eyes glinting with mischief. "You know you can't outrun me, Mia!" she called out, her strokes strong and determined as she gained on her friend.
Mia kicked harder, trying to put some distance between them, but Annie was relentless. "I totally can! You're just slow!" she teased, glancing back over her shoulder with a playful smirk.
Jay, who had been lounging on the deck with a magazine, couldn't help but chuckle at the scene unfolding in front of him. He shook his head, droplets of water flying from his hair as he stood up. "Alright, alright, break it up, you two!" he called out, still laughing. "Someone's going to get hurt if you keep this up!"
Mia turned around, still swimming backwards, and stuck her tongue out at Jay. "She's just mad because I got her good!" she said, splashing another wave of water toward Annie.
Annie dodged the splash with a mock glare. "You're going to pay for that one, Mia!" she warned, her voice full of playful menace.
Before Mia could react, Annie lunged, and they both went under the water with a splash. Jay sighed, half-amused, half-exasperated as he wiped water off his face.
"Guys, seriously!" he called out again, trying to keep a straight face. "I'm getting soaked over here!"
Mia surfaced first, gasping for air between giggles. "It's not my fault! She started it!" she protested, swimming towards the edge of the pool.
Annie popped up right behind her, shaking her head like a dog to get the water out of her eyes. "Did not!" she retorted, but her grin gave her away.
Jay crossed his arms, pretending to be stern. "I don't care who started it, just try not to drown each other, okay?"
Mia and Annie exchanged a look, then burst out laughing, the tension of their mock battle evaporating. They climbed out of the pool, dripping wet, and flopped down on the lounge chairs next to Jay.
"Truce?" Mia asked, holding out her hand to Annie.
"Truce," Annie agreed, shaking her hand firmly.
Jay rolled his eyes but couldn't hide his smile. "You two are like kids," he said, picking up his magazine again. "Just don't drag me into it next time."
Mia leaned back, enjoying the warmth of the sun on her face. "No promises," she said, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
A few minutes later, Mia sat up, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she suggested, "How about a picnic? Maybe by a waterfall?"
Annie's face lit up at the idea. "At a waterfall? Why not?! That sounds amazing!"
Mia raised an eyebrow, her tone teasing. "What did you do to my scared friend? She's usually not this enthusiastic."
