Y/N followed Aro down the sprawling corridors. Their arms intertwined as he led the way. The air was thick with the scent of ancient parchment and the faintest hint of blood.
Aro and Y/N suddenly came to a stop as they approached the stair balcony. This was where Aro was indicated to give his speech to the immortals that stood below.
Y/N paused, her eyes scanning the scene. The estates occupants, vampires of unimaginable age and power, moved with an effortless grace that belied their supernatural nature. Some strolled along the balconies, their voices murmuring in hushed tones. Others gathered in groups, their eyes glinting with amusement or intrigue.
Aro turned to Y/N, his crimson eyes twinkling with anticipation. It was a gaze that Y/N couldn't quite read. Until he switched his sight back on the task at hand.
Aro stepped forward. Leaving Y/N behind with Caius, Athenodora, Jane, Dimitri and Felix. Marcus was to stay in the estate dungeons until they left to head back to Volturi. Y/N could only stand from afar and watch Aro as he gave his speech. Aro could not have Y/N stand near him. He did not want some vampires to know about their mating.Aro stood against the railing that was at the front of the balcony. His gaze among all the immortals that roamed below. Everyone was hushing each other and gathering to listen. Y/N could see Aro was opening and closing his fists at his side. The room fell silent as their attention was looking up upon the Volturi.
"The time has come for us to stand together as one," Aro's voice boomed across the grand hall, his eyes scanning the crowd of eager faces before him. "United, we are invincible. Divided, we are nothing but mere shadows of our true potential." A hush fell over the room as Aro's words hung heavily in the air, each syllable carrying the weight of a thousand unspoken promises. "Remember, my friends, that our strength lies not in our numbers but in our unwavering resolve to overcome whatever challenges may come our way. Today, we take a stand against the darkness that threatens to engulf us all. Today, we fight not just for ourselves, but for the future of our world."
Aro took a second of silence his eyes shifted to catch Y/N's gaze before he continued the remainder of his speech. "However,..." Aro's tone lightened. "We cannot do this by feasting on every mortal" Aro sensed the unease and controversy arising below him. He had an image to uphold, and he could not afford to have immortals defy him or question his every decision. He needed to keep them happy. He needed them to stay on his side. For their own species sake.
That is when Aro's demeanor returned to the usual Volturi leader. He straightened his back, lifter his head tall and his voice turned back into the sadistic blood-sucking vampire that he was. With a grin and his hands grabbed the railing of the balcony. "We let them breed. We keep the mortals breathing so they can reproduce. Thus, allowing us to feed" The crowd below roared with agreement. Aro sensed their approval.
Aro's words made Y/N feel slightly nauseas to herself. Of course, vampires feed on blood. Of course, the Volturi fed on mortals weekly. This was nothing new to her. She grew up and was raised around vampires for years. But this was different. She grown close to Aro. She witnesses his many sides. Was Lucian, right? Could Aro turn on her? Y/N watched Aro continue his speech. He was proclaiming everything that was discussed in earlier delegations.
Everything from what covens and organizations were receiving Volturi funds, what villages they were planning to feast on this year and the recent executions of those that created vampire children. One of the subjects being about hybrids and how that would never come to their region as it is forbidden. Aro mostly giving the vampires a reminder of who he is and the Volturi.
This image of Aro was scary. Y/N found him to be magnificent as he stood there. However, the words leaving his lips were toxic. He was describing mortals as if they were mere cattle, and she was a mortal herself. Maybe a witch, but still a mortal.
Aro finally finished his speech. Everyone seemed pleased. Aro waved his goodbye and turned on his heels as he left the balcony. Those below scrambled into their recent agendas. The Volturi dispersed after Aro finished and took their steps down the grand staircase. Aro, however, came to Y/N.
"Now that's settled" Aro spoke with a serious feature. "It was good" Y/N's voice shook a bit. For some reason she seems 'off'. She didn't know how to react to his speech. She loves Aro but was slightly taken aback by his words. Aro noticed her slight change. He could sense it on her. "Is everything ok?" he questioned her with narrowed eyes. Y/N couldn't keep her eyes off his crimson gaze. "I. I am fine" she stuttered a bit. She was lying. She was not ok.
"Speak to me" he raised his brows and deepened his tone. Yet he held a palm out for her to take. "You don't have to speak" he indicated. Y/N did not say a word. Silence roamed between them. Y/N slowly lifted her delicate hand and placed it in Aro's. He wrapped his fingers around hers. but this time his crimson gaze stayed on Y/N. He did not blink.
He delved into her mind palace and quickly understood. Y/N knew he found out the moment his eyes softened, and he blinked once. Then his eyes landed to the floor as he caressed her hand in his. "I understand..." Aro spoke in almost a whisper. "Aro...I.." Y/n began to explain. Aro did not let her finish. He cut her off sharply. the only word that fell from his lips was the call of her name "Y/N" he stated. "I always give speeches and delegate for the Volturi. You must understand that some of the harsh, cruel and unpleasant subjects I speak of, do not pertain to you. I would never harm you, nor would I allow anyone else to lay a hand or sink a fang into you he continued "Even if they were stupid enough to drink your blood and die from its poison, I would harm them far worse. You must remember, you are not just a mortal, you are a sorcerous as well" Aro patted her hand lightly as he held it up between them. Y/N kept her eyes on him as he continued looking down. "Aro, I do not see you as a monster. I know I am a witch. But I am also mortal. Meaning mortals are part of my species as well." she stated softly to Aro. "I know, but I have to keep them happy. This keeps peace among our covens and for the society where your species roam" Aro gave her a knowing glance. As if he was speaking through his eyes, trying to get Y/N to understand.
Y/N understood his gaze and returned a knowing exchange. She silently nodded her head and placed a soft smile. Aro only returned the soft gaze and kept their hands intertwined as he walked her to the estate lounge. They needed to mingle with a few immortals before making their way back to Volturi.
