THE room was small and musty, but it was dry and relatively warm. I flicked on the light, casting a dull glow over the threadbare carpet and worn furniture. Poppy stood in the middle of the room, dripping water onto the floor.
"Poppy," I called out, grabbing a towel from the bathroom and handing it to her. May itatanong lang ako."
She took the towel with a grateful smile, at lumabas muna 'ko sa kuwarto to give her some privacy. The storm still raged outside, the wind rattling the windows and the rain drumming incessantly on the roof.
"May tinda ba kayong T-shirt dito? Or anything na puwedeng ipangbihis?"
"Wala akong nabiling T-shirt.
The room was quiet except for the faint hum of the heater trying to chase away the damp chill. My clothes were draped over the chair by the heater, hoping they would dry by morning.
The bathroom door creaked open, and Poppy stepped out, wrapped in a matching bathrobe. Her hair was damp, falling in loose waves around her shoulders. The soft light from the bedside lamp cast a gentle glow on her face, highlighting her natural beauty. I felt a sudden rush of warmth in my cheeks and quickly looked away, pretending to busy myself with adjusting the heater.
"Salamat, Kuya Faith. Her gratitude was sincere, and it touched something deep inside me. I felt a surge of emotion, a mix of protectiveness and something else I couldn't quite name.
I risked a glance in her direction and immediately regretted it. She looked stunning, her skin glowing, the bathrobe cinched just enough to hint at her figure beneath. I swallowed hard and looked away again, feeling my heart pound in my chest.
