- Nico's POV -

It was raining. Nico stood outside on the porch of the Hades cabin as he breathed in the sweet smell of wet grass and damp soils. It was heavenly.

Beside him, sat his first and only love. Y/N was humming to herself with her nose buried in a book. Her gaze was intense, which made Nico understand immediately that he was not to intervene.

Slowly, Nico sat behind you so he could cuddle you to his chest. Letting out a tired sigh, Nico closed his eyes and allowed himself to drown in the warmth and comfort you gave him.

It wasn't until you finally closed the book that Nico could whisper sweet nothings into your ear, gently caressing your arms and cheeks as he spoke softly, "Did you enjoy reading, my love?"

You smiled, looking up at your boyfriend with a tender, loving gaze, "It was good. All good."

Nico chuckled and planted a delicate kiss to your cheek, "You look dazed. Like you've been daydreaming for too long."

You held up your book, a goofy smile that Nico knew and loved all too well was still plastered across your face, "Oh, Nico. It was wonderful. That one couple I've been shipping finally got together. I still have a few pages left, but there shouldn't be anything bad that happens... right?"

Nico snorted, knowing that most of the stories that you read don't usually have happy endings.

Just like yours.

That night, Nico waited until you fell asleep. However, you insisted on cuddling with him until the two of you drifted off to dreamland.

You snuggled into your love's arms and let out a tired sigh, "I'm glad we made it."

Nico's heart ached, burning painfully in his chest. He hesitantly looked down at you, smiling softly as you touched your cheek. It was as if he was mesmerized by your face."I love you, you know that? Forever and ever. Always you."

You grinned, running your fingers through Nico's hair as you gazed up at him lovingly. "What's the occasion? Why are you suddenly acting all sweet and sappy?"

Nico could feel his eyes stinging and pickling with tears. He was, once again, grateful for his dim-lighted, dark room that hid his red nose and heartbroken eyes.

"Can't I just appreciate the best thing that's ever happened to me?" Nico choked out, hoping that he didn't sound too tearful.

Being the sweet, bright person that you are, you completely mistook Nico's shaky voice as a sign of longing. You weren't wrong, in a way. And Nico adored the soft, gentle kisses you planted across his face.

You were so comforting, so soft. The poor boy couldn't take it anymore.

He wrapped his arms protectively around you, burying his face in the crook of your neck as he prayed to his father desperately.

Please, Nico begged, his lips trembling against your skin, Let me keep her. Just let me have this one thing. Please.

Though Hades may be seen as sweet and kind once in a while, the fates do certainly stay cruel.

Nico allowed himself to fall asleep in your arms, thinking that it would all get better. But no, his dreams led him again to go to Tartarus. That the key to stop this battle against Gaea laid within his hands.

He eventually woke up at about 4 AM in the morning. Nico slipped out from bed, looking down at you with teary eyes. With that, he knelt beside your bed and sobbed silently.

He kissed your palm, knuckles, forehead, cheeks, and finally your lips. He caressed your hair and your face as if it were the last time he would be able to see you.

Forcing himself to pull away, Nico shadow-traveled himself to the nearest entrance to Tartarus.

As the black smoke encircled around him, Nico whispered into the dark.

"Thanks for being my forever, Y/N," Nico choked out a strangled sob, "I love you."

He would be damned if he'd let Gaea, or even the fates, take you away from him.
