"I'm sorry," you said again, as if those were the only words you knew, "I love you."
As you spoke, Nico's eyes widened with terror.
He wanted to grab you, pull you back inside the camp borders, and kiss you till you were breathless. He wanted you to run through the garden fields with him until you were too tired to keep going. He wanted you to read to him again.
He wanted to love you until you were sick of him. All over again.
Nico watched helplessly as you pulled away from his arms, picking up a spare knife from the ground and running forwards to join the fight.
He tried to run after you, to get the sword of his own and help save you. But Thalia and Grover held him back, knowing how it was going to go if he reached you.
In his desperation, he began to yell.
"Please! Just- Just let me go with you! Please, please, please!" He begged, his hands shaking as he tried to get out of his friends' grasp.
"Trust me, kid," Thalia muttered, tugging him back before Nico could do anything else, "I've been there."
- Third Person's POV -
You gave it your all, fighting with the remaining ounces of strength you had left in your weak, tired body.
Most of the Ares kids are down, with only a few of the strongest left standing.
You looked around and saw a group of P/E. All of a sudden, an idea sparked inside of your genius, little head.
Gods, you were reckless. Just like your siblings. Just like your M/P.
"Get down!" you yelled at the remaining comrades, focusing all of your energy on the element.
With a loud roar, all the monsters screeched in pain as golden inchor gushed all over the green, lush, grassy fields.
Oh, how it was a sight. The beasts were trashing right before your very eyes.
After being certain that they're all dead and buried, you lowered your hands and collapsed onto the ground.
Your vision was dark and blurry, but the loud cheers of your friends behind you were as clear as day.
You began staggering back up the hill, watching as many of the watching campers rush forwards to help the Ares kids out and make sure that Carter was okay.
Thalia and Grover finally had the heart to let go of their friend, allowing the desperately, lovesick fool to run over to you.
"You damn idiot," he panted, wrapping his weak arms around you tightly. Your heart broke when you felt the upset skin and bones scold you with all the sadness hidden behind his eyes.
"Do you hear me?" Nico sobbed tearfully, tugging at your arms slightly, "I'm talking to you!"
"I know," you whispered, leading him away from the prying eyes of the other campers. Some of them wanted to congratulate you, while many were nosy on what you might be talking about with your ex.
"I love you too," you smiled softly, cupping Nico's face in your hands and gently pressing your forehead against his - just like how you used to do all those years ago. "I'm sorry."
Nico shook his head, unable to stop the stupid tears from streaming down his cheeks. His nose was all blotchy and his eyes swollen like a bee sting.
"Stop apologising," he whispered, slowly reaching forward to cradle you in his arms longingly, "I only ever wanted you to be happy. Didn't I make you happy?"
"The happiest," you replied, "You were my entire world, my whole heart."
"Then why did you leave?" Nico tucked you comfortably under his chin, "Why did you run away?"
"I couldn't bear being the source of your misery," you told him, feeling as if you had said a lie and an excuse, "While you have brought me happiness and light, I was sucking the life out of you. Like a parasite."
"When has that ever happened?" Nico asked incredulously, his eyebrows shooting upwards in a mixture of surprise and shock, "Where have you got the hint, a sign, that I might ever be burdened by you?"
Nico gently kissed your forehead, and you couldn't help but chuckle fondly at the gesture. Ever since he saw that one video on TikTok that a kiss on the forehead was a sign of a promise, he would often do the sweet gesture to you almost every single day during your relationship.
He tied the bracelet you had given him before the fight back onto your wrist, holding your hands up to press against his aching, beating heart.
"I'm a coward, aren't I?" you flushed in embarrassment.
"And a heartbreaker," Nico grinned, the sparkle in his eyes returning as he pecked your nose.
"And a gem," he kissed your hair.
"And impossible," he smooched your cheeks.
"And a jewel," he nuzzled against your neck.
"And an idiot," he connected your lips with his own.
Taken aback by the kiss, you watched as Nico's eyebrows knitted with pure longing and desperation for you, his face flushing as he closed his eyes and kissed you with all the passion and adoration he could muster.
That's when it hit you. You realized for the first time in forever that Nico di Angelo was really, truly, and fully in love with you.
And gods, you loved him just as much.
A/N - This whole thing took up about 3,000 words. Not bad for a novella practice (which would be about 10,000 words).
Anyways, that's a wrap! tysm for stopping by :)
