Now, you were standing face to face in front of your best friend, each on different sides. The battle raged all around the two of you, yet your eyes were sharp and your gaze unwavering.

"Nico," you muttered, sword raised at him as a monster charged from behind you.

"Y/N," Nico grumbled back, a pegasus running from behind his back

How did it all come to this?

Alternate Ending #2: Nico was forced to kill you.

- Third Person's POV -

Nico's hands were shaking, you could see it as clear as day. However, underneath all that fear in his gaze, Nico's eyes were dark and empty.

"Is there any way to get you back?" Nico mumbled into the silence between the two of you, "Any way for you to come back home? To me?"

You opened your mouth, wanting more than anything to say something to soothe him. Could you really throw your years of friendship with Nico just like that?

An explosion could be heard from afar. For Nico, the thought of losing his new friends and the campers back at Half-Blood shot a bullet through his heart.

While for you, it brought back the day when you lost everything. That day when the Princess Andromeda had sunk and burned to ashes with Greek fire.

You remembered the screams of your friends, the cries of the hopeless demigods who joined Kronos, thinking that they could finally have a family to come home to.

You were on different sides of the war, but it didn't mean that you never thought of your comrades as family just as Nico might have felt with his.

Another booming yell rang through the area, snapping you out of your daydream.

"No," you said firmly, "I'm never coming back. I'm here to avenge my family."

Nico pursed his lips as his eyes wavered over to your sword, "I'm so sorry, love."

He closed his eyes and swung his sword roughly in your direction. Knowing that Nico was a great fighter, you knew that was a sloppy effort.

Still, your reflexes kicked in and you knocked his sword with a quick hit onto his wrist with the butt of your weapon. With one, swift move, you dropped down and kicked Nico on his knees, making him fall backward onto the ground.

You half-expected him to be glaring up at you, shouting at you or something. However, you were surprised to find Nico refusing to look at you.

Nico was looking blankly at the earth, like he was having a staring contest with the grass in the dirt. He didn't say anything, nor did he fight back.

You gulped, your sword raised as you looked down at your best friend, your first love. Without even knowing what you were doing, you dropped your sword to the ground.

Before Nico could register anything, Clarisse pulled him away by the arm as she waved her spear skillfully at you.

You stumbled as she hit a vital point on your chest, making you gasp and fall to the ground in pain.

"Y/N!" Nico yelled in alarm, trying to get out of Clarisse's grasp. She ignored him and tossed Nico out of the way and into her chariot, driving him back to the Empire State Building.

"Nico..." you mumbled weakly, your head hitting a rock as you blacked out.

~ at the Empire State Building ~

"I got to go back for her, Chiron!" Nico shouted at the centaur, "She's hurt, she's-"

"Why didn't you fight back, Nico?" Chiron mumbled under his breath, staring intently at Nico's bruised knees, "What? Did you prefer dying over saving the world-?"

"I'd prefer dying than having to kill my best friend," Nico grits his teeth, his glare boring holes, "Percy doesn't get questioned for his loyalty, but I do?"

Percy opened his mouth to say something, but Nico didn't get to hear a thing. For in that moment, he felt something slip. Like a piece of his heart was torn apart.

You were dead. Nico could feel it. He knows it.

Born to be a lover, forced to be a fighter.

The Ghost King never wanted to be a soldier.

Nico dropped to his knees once again, letting out a cry of pain and agony.

"We better make her death worth it..." Nico muttered under his breath, his vision blinded with grief and rage, "I'm going to make Kronos pay."
