As Jefferson approached Scarlett, ready with the portal out of Agrabah, he overheard her conversation with someone he couldn't see. He heard her say his name, something about him and an arrangement with whoever she was talking to.
He cleared his throat, making her jump and turn to face him. "What was that about?" He asked, crossing his arms over his chest, hat still in hand. His face was curious, wondering what arrangement she was talking about.
"Just updating the buyer for the necklace." She lied with a shrug. He was gullible. He would believe her without any question. He had always been like that.
He didn't believe her, stepping closer. "How?"
"Magic."
"The buyer said this would be his first magical object." He retorted. "So, either he lied, or you're lying. And why would he mention me?"
She simply smirked, twisting the lie even more. "He wanted to make sure I didn't leave you behind. It'd be such a waste of a pretty face." Her hands cupped his face, thumb stroking his cheek. She started doing it more often after realizing that it made him relax. It made him believe her lies.
He was hesitant, of course, but he slowly relaxed. "Did you get anything else while I was gone?" He asked, his voice softer now.
"I was waiting for you. There's no time to grab any more jewels." She shook her head, finally releasing his face. "Come on, we have to go." He nodded in agreement, tossing his hat onto the ground and watching the portal form. "Where to?"
She held his hand, like she always did, squeezing it gently. "Wonderland." He sighed at the mention of Wonderland. He hated it there. Mostly because he had lost a few too many bets with the blue caterpillar.
"Seriously? You didn't say anything about Wonderland."
"Would you have agreed to come if I had?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. The portal was open now, the wind blowing around them in purple smoke.
"Fair point." He sighed, holding her hand as they both jumped into the portal. When he opened his eyes, they were in the portal room, surrounded by magic doors that led to different realms.
The door to Wonderland was most underwhelming compared to where it led. Just a simple looking glass that led to a world where everything was practically topsy turvy. They both dreaded going in. It was an annoying realm, to say the least.
He took a deep breath as he stood in front of the portal with Scarlett by his side. "Let's get in and get out. I hate this place."
"So dramatic." She laughed, already sticking her hand through the portal. "It'll be fun. It's an adventure."
"Fun is not the word I would use." He sighed, following her through. When he stepped in, the bright lights nearly blinded him. Natural light surprisingly. The sun was always brighter in Wonderland. The colors were far too saturated, making everything seem more intense.
The Blue Caterpillar sat on a giant mushroom, smoking as usual. "Who are you...?" Jefferson rolled his eyes, but he was relieved the caterpillar was too intoxicated to recognize him. He stayed behind Scarlett, yet somehow, the caterpillar's smoke still got in his face.
"I hate that stupid caterpillar." He grumbled, following Scarlett down the path, surrounded by mushrooms and grass that was as tall as a tree. "Where are we going anyway? Who is the necklace for?"
"He's called the March Hare." She answered, keeping the necklace in her pocket. "He collects magical artifacts, and this is one he's been wanting for a while."
"The March Hare? Doesn't sound very threatening."
She glanced back at Jefferson while the singing flowers were trying to get his attention. "Don't let his name fool you. He's a pain in the ass when you upset him." She said, watching the flower stems trying to grab his arm. "I think they like you."
