Chapter 23: Babysitting
Colton's POV
*One Week Later*
"COLTON! DOOR FOR YOU!" My dad yelled. I got out of my bed and walked down the stairs, going to the front door to see my Aunt Liz.
"Aunt Liz? Hi?"
"Hi Colton." She smiled.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Well, as you know, your uncle got out of the hospital yesterday."
"Yeah."
"Okay, well I have to go back to work today and I tried to get a babysitter for the girls but your uncle insisted on watching them himself. The problem is, he can't even take care of himself. I was wondering if you could go over and "hang out with him", but really I want you to take care of stuff around the house. Take care of the girls, help your uncle out. Of course I'll pay you and I'll only be at the school until three." She said.
"Okay." I shrugged.
"Awesome, if you're not busy I'll take you over there now." She said.
"Alright." I said. "DAD!"
"Yeah?" He asked, walking up to me.
"I'm going to go to Aunt Liz's house." I said.
"Alright, see you later." He said and I walked out of the house. I closed the door and followed her to her car. I got in the passenger seat and she got in the driver's seat. We drove to her house in silence, which luckily wasn't a very long drive. She parked in the driveway and turned off the car. We got out of the car and walked up to the front door.
"Thank you so much for doing this." She said as she opened the door.
"No problem." I said as she closed the door behind me.
"Eddie! Look who's here!" My aunt called as we walked into the living room.
"Colton! What's up!"
"I was just bored so I decided to come over and hang out." My uncle patted the empty spot on the couch next to him and I sat down.
"Alright, well I'm going to head to work. I'll see you later." She said, kissing my uncle and then walking off. We sat on the couch, watching TV until Emily started crying.
"I'll get her." My uncle said, starting to get up.
"No, it's fine. I got it." I said, getting up and going up the stairs, into the nursery.
"What's wrong?" I asked, picking her up. I started bouncing her, trying to calm her down. All of a sudden, I smelled the worst smell, my eyes watering.
"Oh. Wow." I said, placing her on the changing table. I changed her diaper and then put her back in her crib. I walked back downstairs and sat back on the couch.
"Daddy, I'm hungry." Eva said. "COLTON!" She exclaimed once she saw me, jumping on my lap and wrapping her arms around my neck.
"I'll make you something." My uncle said.
"It's fine, I got it." I said as Eva got off of me. I stood up and looked down at Eva. "Do you want some lunch?" I asked and she nodded. I walked into the kitchen and made her some mac and cheese, sitting her at the table and then going back to the couch.
"Colton, I can do some stuff too you know." My uncle said.
"I know, but I'm here so I might as well help. Plus, it'll give me practice for when I have my own kids someday." I smiled.
"Alright." He said. For the next hour I was playing with Eva and taking care of Emily. I only let my uncle get up to go to the bathroom. Everything else, I took care of. Emily started crying again and my uncle started to get up.
"It's okay, I've got her." I said standing up.
"Colton, let me get her this time."
"No, seriously, it's fine. I've got her."
"Colton, let me take care of my daughter."
"No!" I exclaimed.
"What is your problem?"
"Really, I have to do it!"
"Why Colton? Why must you take care of my child for me?" He asked and I sighed.
"That's why I'm here."
"What?"
"Aunt Liz brought me over here so I could help you and help with the kids."
"So she brought you over to babysit me?"
"And the kids." I said. He groaned, flopping back onto the couch.
"I told her I was fine."
"Look, you've just been released from the hospital after being shot, it's okay to need help. You need to rest."
"I've been resting in a hospital bed for two weeks!"
"You just need to take it easy. Constantly getting up and down and climbing stairs can't be good for your healing wound."
"I just hate that this happened." He groaned.
"It's just a consequence of the job." I shrugged. "So, will you please just stay here?" I asked.
"Fine." He sighed. I smiled and went to go check on Emily.
***
"I'M HOME!" My aunt announced.
"MOMMY!" Eva screamed, running to her mom.
"Thanks for getting me a baby sitter!" My uncle called.
"Damnit Colton."
"I had to tell him!"
"Don't blame him, he was just doing what he had to do. I was being difficult." My uncle said.
"Did you have fun with Colton and daddy?" She asked Eva who was tugging on her pant leg.
"Yeah! Can Colton come back tomorrow?"
"I'm sorry, he has school tomorrow."
"Awh." She whined.
"Eva, I'll see if I can come after school, okay?" I asked, crouching down to her height.
"Okay!" She smiled, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"Thank you so much." My Aunt Liz said, handing me a $50 bill.
"Woah, this is too much for just a few hours." I said, my eyes wide.
"It's for dealing with three children." She chuckled. "Need me to drive you home?"
"Yes please."
"Alright, I'll be back." She said as we left.
