That night, Roger and I brought a positively pissed Freddie upstairs and into the spare room, carrying his heavy and limp body up a flight of what felt like never ending stairs. We put him on the bed and I threw a blanket over him. He had already passed out at this stage.
Roger wiped the sweat off his head.
"Jesus, that guy weighs a tonne!" He whispered.
I laughed and nodded in agreement. Freddie had just started to mumble in his sleep on turn on his side so Roger and I left. Roger told me about all the times Freddie had stripped his clothes off in bed when he had been drunk and I didn't necessarily want to see that....
I followed Roger into our room and he fell onto the bed, groaning loudly.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"My stomach really hurts...." he told me.
His disease meant stomach pains would become a regular part of his life.
I lay on the bed beside him and kissed his cheek. I took his hand and massaged the space in between his index finger and thumb.
"What are you doing?" He asked, opening one eye.
"It gets rid of stomach pains." I said. He smiled.
I got out of bed to put my pyjamas on and Roger made himself comfortable under the covers, groaning in pain every few minutes. My eyebrows furrowed in a frown. He didn't deserve this.
I joined Roger in bed again and turned on my side. I felt him tap my shoulder and I turned back around.
I had just turned around when his lips crashed onto mine. I kissed him back and then pulled away. "What are you doing?" I asked.
"You never gave me a kiss goodnight." He said.
I smiled and gently pecked his lips. "Good night."
I lay back down and he jumped on top of me.
"Roger!" I hissed. "I thought you were feeling sick."
"I'm fine now." He said, kissing my neck. "We should make a baby."
"Freddie doesn't want a baby until he finds someone he loves." I told him.
"Not for Freddie. For us."
I laughed. "Luke is only two Roger. He's still a handful."
Roger rolled his eyes and sighed. He got off me and lay down again, the both of us falling asleep side by side.
That morning I woke up to the sound of children laughing. I looked to my left and saw Roger was still in bed beside me. I got out and headed down the stairs, hearing Freddies soft voice and the giggles of Elly and Aidan.
I stood in the doorway.
"Morning Megan. I just thought I'd get the kids up for you."
"That's very kind of you Freddie. Thank you." I said and gave him a warm smile.
"Right Elly, get your breakfast eaten." I said. "We've got to get you to the hospital at ten."
"Hospital? Why do you need to go to the hospital?" He asked.
Shit, I thought. I hadn't told Freddie yet.
I knew his reaction would not be good so I decided to tell him later when the kids weren't around.
"Oh she just needs a check up." I said vaguely.
"Oh good. I was worried something was wrong." He said.
