I jerked up from the table. I had fallen asleep. My mind was a blur. I looked around and waited for my eyes to focus. There was an empty bottle of vodka on the table, an overflowing ashtray and a lit cigarette perched on it. I put my hand on the table and it was soaked in a liquid. I assumed it was the vodka.
I picked the bottle up and threw it in the cabinet under the sink. I put the cigarette out and emptied the ashtray into the bin. Then I looked at the clock. It has half four in the morning.
I stumbled up the stairs, missing a few steps as I made my way up. I gently opened the door to Elly and Aidan's room. They were fast asleep.
I went into Luke's room and he was curled up under the covers, breathing heavily, completely unconscious.
I sighed loudly and went into my own bedroom, pushing against the door and closing it carefully behind me.
I saw Megan sleeping on the very edge of her side of the bed, almost as if she was going to fall out.
I lifted the cover up and got into the bed too, gently stroking her shoulder.
She immediately jerked it away.
I felt hurt and turned to face away from her.
She would be fine in the morning.
I woke up in the middle of the bed the next morning. Megan was no longer beside me. It was half eleven when I checked my watch. It was unusual for me to stay in bed so long.
I washed my face, had a shower and got dressed.
I wasn't hungover, but I did feel exhausted. I went downstairs and looked around. Megan nor the kids were there.
I sat on the couch, just to rest. I put my face in my hands and closed my eyes.
Suddenly, I heard someone coming down the stairs.
I looked up and saw Megan struggling to carry four suitcases down. I stood up quickly and tried to help her, but she was extremely stubborn.
"Where are you going?" I asked, putting my hand on her chest to stop her.
"Not to Germany, that's for sure." She snapped.
"Baby, please, look. I wanted it to be a surprise." I told her.
"And it was. A shocking one. You wanted to ship us all off to Germany, when I've just gotten out of the hospital. Roger, the kids are only adapting to me being home, and you want to make us leave it?"
"I'm sorry. I thought I was doing what's best for us all." I said.
"Well, you thought wrong." She said.
"So... What are you doing?" I asked, watching her open the suitcases.
"Making sure we have everything." She told me.
"No, like, what are you doing with the suitcases? What is the purpose of this?"
She stood up.
"What does it look like? I'm leaving." She told me, zipping the suitcases back up.
"Why?! You're overreacting! Please, Megan, the doctor said you'll be irritable and irrational. You don't know what you're doing. Please, we can sort this out." I pleaded.
"I know exactly what I'm doing." She said, opening the front door.
"Megan! Please, just listen to me. I didn't plan the move to be bad! I did it for us! Why can't you see that?"
"It's not the moving that bothered me. It's the not telling me." She said, opening the boot of her car.
"Please, just stop and think. Are you sure this is what you want to do? Please, Megan. I told you, I did this because I care about our family, I care about you."
"No, you don't. You knew I wouldn't take a move like that well because of all that's happened, and you did it anyways."
"I planned to it get you away from Ben!!' I shouted and she looked at me with shock.
"Don't say his name ever again." She muttered under her breath.
"But, when I put it like that, can't you see why I did it?"
"No. Bye, Roger." She said.
She ran back into the house and brought the kids out. They wouldn't look at me.
"Where are you going?" I asked her before she got into the car.
"I don't know. Wherever the road takes me." Megan said.
"Please, baby, I love you. You know I do. I.. I just want us to be safe and happy. You know that's my priority."
She got into the car and winded down the window.
She looked at me and there were tears in her eyes.
"I just wish you'd told me." She said, and then drove off.
"Megan! Megan, please! Come back!" I shouted after her, but she was gone.
"Come back..." I muttered under my breath and walked back into the house.
**Megans POV**
I told Roger I didn't know where I was going, but I did know. I knew exactly where we were going.
I drove out of town and into the countryside. I looked out for the house.
We were there. I unloaded the kids out of the car and knocked at the front door, waiting for them to answer.
The door opened.
"Megan, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, Brian. It's a long story." I said.
