Slight angst

"This isn't going to work."

The wind whipped wildly at your hair, making it thrash against your neck like a wild animal. Yet you took no notice, instead staring up at the young man in front of you.

"W-What?"

He let out a deep sigh, his dark eyes burning with pain. The same pain that you felt stinging in your heart.

"This can't happen, Y/N. It's too dangerous."

You felt like you'd been punched in the gut.

"But-"

He gently touched the side of your face with his fingertips. A single curl of dark hair hung across his forehead and your gaze focused in it as you tried to process what he was telling you.

"I can't put you in any more danger. Being friends with you is risky enough but being more ... if someone ever found out, they'd use you against me. They'd hurt you and I can't let that happen." He ran a hand through his hair as you looked at the ground.

"So that's just it."

"I wish it didn't have to be this way." His voice was wavering, pleading with you to look at him, yet you couldn't bring yourself to raise your gaze.

"I'm sorry."

You could feel that he was about to leave. That he was about to spin his web and swing up and out of sight over the New York skyline. But you couldn't let him go without at least trying to get him to stay.
Your fingers grabbed his arm and you were surprised to find that your hold was strong. You kept your eyes trained on his chest.

"It's not fair."

"I know it's not. But it's the way things have to be."

You shook your head and bit your lip. Your eyes finally met his and you felt a ton of bricks drop down upon your shoulders. "No, Peter, it not. We could try. We could keep it a secret."

You sounded desperate, you knew. It ashamed you, yet you meant every word of it. But even as you spoke, you could see in his eyes that his mind was made up. Nothing you could say would sway his decision.

"You don't understand, Y/N. Believe me, all I want to do is be with you. It's breaking my heart to do this but it has to be done. If anyone ever got hold of you, Y/N, I don't know what I'd do."

His shaking hands gripped yours tightly, holding on for dear life.

"Please try to forgive me, for this. We can still talk at school, we can still be friends."

You looked down again, unable to meet the gaze of the boy you loved but could never be with. Slowly, you nodded.

"Okay."

He closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against yours. "One day, Y/N, if the danger is gone and Queens doesn't need Spiderman anymore ... then we can be together. But as long as I have enemies, I need to keep you safe no matter what sacrifices I have to make."
