"I made a mistake. I made a huge mistake, and I need help."
"You're gonna need to fill in some blanks there Buck," Steve pressed, and you peered over the edge of the roof to see the two.
"Y/N she-" Bucky paused, running his metal hand through his hair as he started to pace. "She told me she..." Even from three floors up, you could see Bucky struggling for words. He leaned on the balcony's railing, hands gripping the rail tightly.
"Buck, take a breath," Steve said calmly, resting a hand on his best friend's shoulder.
"She told me she loved me, and I... I blew her off! She told me exactly what I've been wanting to hear for months and I couldn't even tell her the same!" Bucky let out a sigh. "I was a coward, Steve and... God you should've seen the look on her face, man..." He leaned his forehead onto his hand, and Steve patted his shoulder in comfort.
"Don't bite my head off, but... why didn't you tell her the same?" Steve asked gently and hesitantly, like he was avoiding land mines. "I know you care about her, hell I would go as far as to say you love her too.."
"I do, I really do.." You felt the breath freeze in your lungs. "But I don't want to put her through being with me and, dealing with all my emotional shit She just doesn't deserve that," Bucky almost whispered, staring down at the street below.
"Alright, I'm gonna be honest with you man. Not only can Y/N deal with all your 'emotional shit,' but she wants to. She's a strong ass girl and she cares about you so much. And at this point, both of you need to get over yourselves and just be together because we all know that that is what would make both of you happy." Even after Steve's speech, you could still see Bucky's hesitation. At that point, you decided to take the situation into your hands.
You stood from your crouched position, turning on your heel to the propped open doorway leading downstairs. You didn't hear the rest of Steve and Bucky's conversation, as you were making your way down to floor with the Avengers' rooms. You weren't sure exactly what you'd say to him, but you knew you two needed to have an honest conversation, no matter how painful.
You found Bucky's room quickly, slipping through the door and taking a seat on his desk chair. You hoped after talking to Steve he'd go back to his room, but after about ten minutes sitting in the dark, you were feeling uneasy. Then you heard the handle turning.
You paused for a moment, watching his slim silhouette in the door frame before it evaporated with the flick of the light switch.
"So, who'd you lie to, me or Steve?" Bucky slightly jumped at the sound of your voice, a look of fear on his face. "You know, I don't think either answer would make me feel better.."
"Y/N-"
"I heard you, on the balcony with Steve just now." You stood as Bucky shut the door behind him. "Anything you wanna tell me?" You crossed your arms over your chest and couldn't help but notice the look of guilt in his blue eyes.
"I- Y/N, I'm s-" he scratched the back of his neck, and you'd never seen him so lost for words. "Look, I don't-I just..."
"Oh my God Bucky just say something, please, because I would really love an explanation as to why you let me pour my heart out in front of you, and blatantly turned me down and lied to me by the sound of it. Did- Did, you lie to me?" Your accusation began as harsh and angry, but once you asked, your voice cracked in hope despite the nature of the question.
Bucky paused for a moment, searching your eyes before replying. "I don't..know, Y/N and I-I'm sorry that I don't, but truth is, I don't know, how I feel..."
"Oh bullshit, Bucky either you like me or you don't it's a simple yes or no-"
"Yes! Alright?! I love you! I'm head over heels in love with you and that's why I lied..!" he finally admitted, and you felt a blend of emotions; delighted, relieved, but mainly confused. He must've noticed your confusion because he continued. "Have you seen my life lately?" he started, in a softer tone than the one he just had. "Have you seen my past? Everything I've done, everything I'm going through... I didn't want to weigh you down with all my baggage, Y/N, I love you too much.."
"You think I care that you were an assassin against your will for fifty some years? That you have emotional baggage? I don't give two shits about that Bucky!" you exclaimed, your feet carrying you a few steps toward him. "I just...want this! I want you! Bucky, I'd be more worried if you had nothing to regret, nothing to work through, because despite being a genetically enhanced super soldier with a metal arm, you are human. And you can't scare me off, I promise."
It seemed your mind didn't want to wait any longer because after you stopped speaking, you held his cheek and pulled your lips to his, feeling as though you'd waited decades to do so. He returned your action, an arm wrapping itself around your waist to hold you as close as he could.
