Sliding your key into your locker door you twisted it and pulled it open, all while juggling an arms full of text books and note pads. A small slip of pink paper fell down from your cluttering of useless college junk. Not recognising the paper as not seeming to recall ever owning pink paper you set your books on the top shelf of your locker and cautiously reached down to pick up the nearly folded note.
Unfolding it and flattening out the creases your eyes skimmed over a line of neatly written words. 'Do you think about me, as much as I think about you... Because I sure hope so.'
Your heart swelled up in your chest, your eyes quickly darting up to glance around, hoping to catch a glimpse of who could have sent you with admiring note. But all your thoughts about this mysterious person melted away when a gentle tap was placed against your shoulder. With an abrupt, and somewhat startled turn you came face to face with your closest friend.
"Lay, it's you!" you breathed out a sigh of relief, not quite understanding why you seemed so on edge. "You startled me!"
Lay furrowed his eyebrows and have you a skeptical look. "Why? it's four o'clock. I always meet you at your locker at the time." Lay let out a nervous sounding chuckle. "I drive you home remember." he playfully punched your shoulder with his usual wide smile set on his lips. But his smile dropped when his eyes focused upon the slip of paper in your hands. "What is that?"
"Nothing," you replied to quickly as you crumpled the paper up and threw it into your locker before slamming the metal door and locking it. "Let's go!" you linked your arm through his and pulled him out towards his cute little car, trying to avoid and awkward questions based on your suspicious behaviour.
__________
Week after week passed and you had started to find these little notes everyday in every place imaginable. It also seemed that this secret admirer of yours knew your home address, and although any other girl would have found that creepy and weird, you thought it was the sweetest thing ever.
"I've never had a secret admirer before," you muttered to Lay as you nibbled on your sweet chilli crisps, rustling the packet and shaking it to get at the smaller, more flavoursome ones at the bottom of the packet.
"He sounds like a creep to me," Lay mumbled nonchalantly as he lay back in the grass, his arms behind his head as he chomped away on his watermelon flavoured chewing gum.
You gentle slapped the side of his skull and glared down at him when he peered at you questionably over the rim of his Wayfarer sunglasses. "Don't be mean, Yixing. He's a sweetie."
"You've never met the guy," he protested as he propped himself up on his elbow, pushing you jokingly, just hard enough to make you topple over and land on your side in the grass.
"You're just jealous!" You teased, rolling over to face him, his breath halting when he noticed the close proximity of your lips to his own. But before Lay could utter a sound the college bell rang and you hopped up off the grass quicker than a gun could fire, grabbed your bag and ruses off towards your last class, eager for it to end so you could find yet another note within your locker.
__________
Last period seemed to go slower now than it ever had in the past, it almost seemed that the hands on the classroom clock were mocking you, laughing at your inpatient.
But at the sound of the bell you squeaked mentally and hopped out of class. Rushing to your locker, squeezing past lone students and gangs with elegance and almost dropping your key as you fumbled to fit it inside the lock. Yanking the door open you were greeted with the familiar folded note, and you couldn't help but smile as you reached in and grabbed it, quickly unfolding it to read the words beautiful scribbled across the paper.
"Let us commit the perfect crime. You have already stolen my heart, so I believe I should steal yours in return. Meet me under the blossom tree near the flower garden. I shall be eagerly waiting."
You held the note to your chest and smiled, reading the note over a second time before you made your way towards the back of the college. Pushing through the double doors you were hit with the sweet sent of honeysuckle and peonies. And at the end of a long gravel path stood the most beautiful cherry blossom tree, the pink petaled flowers sprouting in abundance in every branch, the flowers almost seeming to shimmer in the sun as the wind blew through them. And there stood directly understand them was your best friend.
"A creep is he?" you joked, your smile growing wide, like you had no control over it.
Lay lifted his hand up and held his index finger and thumb an inch apart. "Maybe just a little," he admitted with a smile as you stopped a foot away from him. "He does know where you live. And knows all your embarrassing secrets." He held his finger up as if he suddenly got an idea. "Like that time in primary school when you came to school wearing your pyjama bottoms under your skirt and didn't realise until we were getting chances for PE."
Lay laughed when you gently pushed him. "Says he who pulled his pants down so fast in year 3 he yanked his boxers down too."
Lay's cheeks blushed bright red and he wrapped his arms around your shoulders and pulled you against him, rubbing his knuckles against your scalp. "You promised you would never bring that up again."
"Okay! Okay! I'm sorry!" You laughed, admitting to yourself how disappointed and upset you became when he removed his arms from around you. "What was with all the secrecy anyway?"
Lay nervously kicked at one of the pebbles with the rubber of his shoe. "I may have read a few pages of your diary when we were 13, and I remembered you putting how nice it would be to have somebody send you romantic notes. But you know more than anybody how much of a wimp I am when it comes to admitting feelings, so here we are. It only took me six years."
You wrapped your arms around his waist and pressed your head against his chest, hearing hour his pulse suddenly quickened and his heart thumped violently against his ribs and he slowly snaked his arms around you, his head dropping to rest against yours. "You're not a wimp, Lay. You are the bravest man I know."
