Kaira's POV
After cleaning some of my cuts and bruises, Max stays by me and keeps me company. We don't talk about anything in particular, but him just being there is encouraging and comforting.
"Max?"
"Yah, Kaira?"
"Can you unstrap me from this thing?" I ask tentatively.
Max looks down at his hands awkwardly. He doesn't answer at first, fiddling with his fingers.
"Max, please?"
"I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to. They don't want you to try and escape," he answered quietly.
Well, they're finally learning.
"Why do you help them?" I ask, not looking away from him.
Once again, Max doesn't answer right away and I can tell he is uncomfortable. He still doesn't look at me and I start to get frustrated. I know he doesn't agree with what they are doing, but then why doesn't he do something about it?
"I-I don't... know. But it's all I've ever known," he finally admits sheepishly.
"Why?" I'm not meaning to pry, but the word slips off my tongue before I can stop it.
He looks slightly startled that I asked, but answers nonetheless, "One of the older scientists, he took me in when they were on a mission finding more test subjects. He raised me basically."
I look away from him. "Oh," I mumble, "I'm sorry."
He shakes his head, "No. I-" he stops and swallows before continuing, "Don't apologize. I shouldn't help them. You're right."
"Then help me get out of here!" I exclaim, "We can leave this place!" I pull on the restraints holding me down, "Please!"
Max stays silent, seeming to think about what I said. He looks around my glass cell, the door still open, before turning back to me.
"Okay."
Will Kaira finally escape?? I guess you'll have to wait until next update, huh? X)
