I was supposed to update on my other stories (Harry Potters Twin being the first one) but I didn't have internet and I wasn't expecting to for another week but I just got some this morning... Anyway, I only have time to write this. So for all of you who like this book above all my others, congrats. For those who hate me for not choosing the others to update... sorry. Honestly, I'm sorry. But this one always has the shortest chapters and I knew I'd be able to finish.
“Mum!” Lynx shouted in astonishment.
Her mother was like an unbreakable force. She was as quick on her feet as Flitwick and as aggressive as Mad-Eye. She was dueling with a masked Death Eater, next to Will, who had taken her abrupt inclusion in stride. Lynx's dad was covering her mum's back, making sure that anyone who gave her a look were taken down, but never killed. For this, Lynx was glad. Even in the midst of a war, while all of them were fighting to the death, her family was still reliable – they would never kill.
We're good, Lynx thought, with a little relief. After all of this, she had begun to doubt.
In the background, Lynx could hear Hagrid's brother roaring with despair.
That moment of distraction gave the Death Eater an advantage, and he sent a cutting curse at her. With only a few moments to protect herself, she tried to duck to the side. The curse was aimed at her heart, but with her quick reflexes, it hit her shoulder instead. The hole in her shoulder instantly started to spout blood.
It was like someone had plunged a knife in her. Lynx hissed in pain, clutching her wound. The Death Eater slashed his wand again, and a violet light came launching straight at her face.
“Protego!” A familiar, masculine voice shouted.
The Death Eater's spell was intercepted. Cormac bounded in, his wand raised and looking every bit like the hero he pretended to be. If Lynx was honest with herself, she didn't love him. He was an amazing wizard, a funny boy, and a handsome man, but she never felt anything stronger for him than a crush. Now, though, at this very moment, she could picture herself loving him, maybe in the future, when they were mature, when she became less selfish and he became more compassionate.
“Don't hurt her!” Cormac growled, and threw a blood red curse at the Death Eater, who crumpled on the spot.
It would have been extremely romantic and maybe even a little brave, but then Cormac turned around and smiled, looking exceedingly pleased of himself, and the image shattered. Lynx rolled her eyes at him.
He looked like he was about to kiss her, but a voice – a deadly, high voice that haunted Lynx's very dream – slithered through everyone's ears, not missing anyone.
“You have fought,” Voldemort's said, merciless and cold. Unconsciously, the Blue family, Cormac, and Estelle shuffled together. “Valiantly. Lord Voldemort knows how to value bravery. Yet you have sustained heavy losses. If you continue to resist me, you will all die, one by one. I do not wish this to happen. Every drop of magical blood spilled is a loss and a waste. Lord Voldemort is merciful,” Lyra gave a snort, her eyes darkening. “I command my forces to retreat immediately. You have one hour. Dispose of your dead with dignity. Treat your injured.”
The Death Eaters began to back away, their wands still raised, but their faces blank.
“I speak now, Harry Potter, directly to you. You have permitted your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself . I shall wait for one hour in the Forbidden Forest. If, at the end of that hour, you have not come to me, have not given yourself up, then battle recommences. This time, I shall enter the fray myself, Harry Potter, and I shall find you, and I shall punish every last man, woman, and child who has tried to conceal you from me. One hour.”
