Lyra walked down Diagon Alley so she could get her son an owl.
Will had been complaining about how the school owls pecked at him whenever he tried to send Lyra letter and Lyra was going to send him an owl to surrpise him.
The streets of Diagon Alley wasn't as full as they were in the summer, since all the children were out to Hogwarts; but there were a fair number of people shopping. As Lyra walked to the pet shop, people lowerd their heads and scampered out of her way.
The way they scampered made Lyra think of her old friend. A small boy with blonde hair, watery blue eyes, and a round face. He was not a pleasant sight, but he was still her friend. Her heart ached for him and she cursed Sirius for killing Peter.
Once again Lyra wondered what made Sirius want to kill Peter, and why he betrayed Lily and James - James, of all people! They were best mates, almost brothers; it just didn't make sense to Lyra.
Only when people started to point at Lyra did she find out why they were scampering away fromher with their heads lowered. They all knew her. All of them. But they didn't know her.
Lyra wasn't a Black anymore, she was a Blue. Lyra Blue.
Lyra supposed what scared them the most was the fact that she looked exactly like her brother. Even with his skeleton-like appearance you could tell they were related to eachother. Black, elbow length hair; grey eyes that both looked haunted yet Sirius' looked slightly crazed, high cheekbones and they were both the exact same hieght.
". . . Sirius Black's sister. . ."
"I hear she helped him break out of Azkaban-"
"Complete rubbish! I know her, she's very nice. . . though Sirius Black had been nice too before he killed all those people. . ."
". . . she shouldn't be walking free. . ."
". . . put her huband in the hospital. . ."
". . . Best friends with a werewolf, aurgh!"
Those were the conversations Lyra was hearing as she walked passed everyone. Lyra kept her head held and pretended she didn't hear anything.
Lyra opened the shop door and walked in, her indifferant expression changing into a scowl.
"Hands in the air!" said a voice, that was a few octives higher then what should be possible. "Right now!"
Lyra's scowl deepened and she raised her hands. She hadn't had to do this since Sirius had just been sent to Azkaban, she should have known people would be doing it again.
A small plump woman came out from behind the counter, her head matted with grey hair she had put into a sloppy braid. Her face was heavily wrinkled and her lips were thin.
"What bussiness do you have here, Black?" she demanded, though her voice was slightly shakey.
"My name is Lyra Blue," Lyra snapped. "I'm married. And my bussiness here it to buy an owl. This is a pet shop, right?"
"Of course it's a pet shop," the woman snapped back. "Raise up your write sleeve - come on, now, don't give me that look! Hurry up!"
Lyra rolled her eyes and rolled up her wite sleeve, to show pale, flawless skin.
"Is there a spell to hide a Dark Mark?" The woman asked herself.
"Not that I know of," Lyra said, seething. "Now can you get that wand out of my face so I can buy an owl?"
The woman hesitated but lowered her wand. She didn't stuff it in her pocket, though; instead, she found it more reassuring to keep it in her claw-like hands. Apparaently she found Lyra untrustworthy.
Lyra strolled around the shop, taking her sweet time to find an owl. She knew the woman was getting more and more nervous every second Lyra searched.
Lyra was very interested in this one owl that she passed at least four times. It was large, so it looked like it could take a long journey, and had ember eyes. It wasn't anything special, it had chocolate brown feathers and a yellow beak - but that's what made her so interested.
Nick had an ordinary look to him, but he was absolutely brilliant. This owl was ordinary, so maybe he was a very good owl.
Lyra pet his large head softly and the owl's ember eyes closed slowly. If the owl could purr like a cat, Lyra was sure he would be doing that right then and there. Lyra put her arm in front of his feet and he jumped on gracefully.
"I would like this owl," Lyra said, holding it up for the woman to see. "How much?"
Lyra watched in amusement as the woman started to sweat under Lyra's gaze. Her wand hand was shaking so much that the wand clambored to the floor. Lyra took a menacing step forward and glowered down at the witch, though she really wanted to laugh her head off.
"F-free!" the witch gasped. "He's f-free just t-t-take him! Leave m-me, p-please!"
"For free?" Lyra said, feining shock; she knew this was coming. "Really? How kind of you!"
The witch wasn't capable of speach, she was making small wimpering sound from her lips and she looked as though she were about to cry. Lyra wondered if she could get a free cage out of this woman, but thought against it. Five years of bullying people at Hogwarts was quite enough for her.
"I'l be off, then," Lyra called over her shoulder as she left the shop.
Lyra walked through the streets of Diagon Alley a bit more confidently then she did before. She was quite proud of herself. Being a mother of two, it was hard to be scary - especially when she was buying her kids everything they asked for - the spoiled brats.
Lyra laughed quietly to herself. They were her spoiled brats.
