"I have to go to Arthimancy," Lyra laughed, giving Cormac one last kiss before walking down the corridor. "Bye!"
"See you later, Lyra," She heard Cormac call before she raced down the corridor to her next class.
Only when she was halfway there, and almost running late, she realised that she had left her bag of books back in that deserted corridor with Cormac.
Lyra sighed, her feet already hurting from all the running, and hurried back to the corridor she had just left ever so reluctantly.
The portraits gave her raised eyebrows as she raced by them. They had often seen Lyra Black forget stuff and having to hurry back the way she just left, but it never failed for them to be amused at her. They would often laugh at her expression when she realised that she had left yet another thing.
Lyra sighed in annoyance when she seen the portraits amused faces turning her way; she had seen them so often before.
When Lyra finally made it to the deserted corridor, she found out that it wasn't so deserted anymore. She heard hushed and angry voices whispering at eachother sharply, she recodnised them both. It was Cormac and Mary.
"-I don't know why you spend all your time with her, Cormac," Mary said in a hushed and angry tone.
Lyra narrowed her eyes and leaned in closer to listen. The way Mary had said 'her' gave Lyra an idea on who she was talking about.
"I spend time with her because she's my girlfriend, Mary," Cormac said. Then his voice sounded very pleased. "Jealous, Mary? Now you know how I feel with you and Micheal Hodge."
"I told you I was going to break up with Micheal!" Mary said, furious. "I'm just looking for the right time! You know I don' love him, I love you."
Lyra's hands clenched into fists. Mary loved Lyra's Cormac? That couldn't be, because Lyra loved Cormac; they had been together for months already. But why would Cormac have this conversation? Why did he pause when Mary said she loved him?
"If you really loved me you wouldn't be flaunting around with your Hufflepuff everywhere I go," Cormac said quietly.
"I thought you loved me, Cormac," Mary said, her voice soft. "I told you I was going to break up with him, and I was, but now you have a new girlfriend - Lyra Black - and now I'm asking you to break up with her and you're saying no. . . do you love her Cormac?"
There was a silence and Lyra waited desperately for him to say that he did love her.
"No," Cormac said quietly, breaking Lyra's heart in two.
"Then why did you ask her on that date to Hogsmeade?" Mary asked, sounding close to tears.
"I wanted to make you jealous," Cormac admitted. "And I knew you always hated Black, so I asked her. And besides, I always knew that she liked me, so it was easy."
Lyra slid down the wall. Cormac never cared for her, he only used her. He didn't even use her first name, he used her surname. Lyra's breathing shallowed as she listened on.
"Well, you succeeded of making me jealous," Mary said quietly, her voice having alittle laugh in it. "And I know that you're jealous of me and Micheal. . . how about we both break up with them tomorrow?"
"Alright," Cormac said. "Now go to the common room, we already missed last class and I don't want you to get in trouble because of me."
"See you later," Mary said.
There was a silence and Lyra peeked around the corridor corner to see what was happening. What she saw made her heart shatter into millions of peices; she felt like she got punched in the gut. Mary and Cormac weren't snogging at all, but what Lyra saw was so much worse.
Cormac had Mary's face cupped in both his large hands and Mary's small hands rested over his. They both stared into eachothers eyes with such love and tentiveness it made Lyra slightly uncomfortable to watch.
They loved eachother.Lyra realised. At first she had felt like she was betrayed but now she felt like the other woman; the one that was in the way of true love. But she wasn't, she wasn't the other woman. She was the victum.
Lyra choked, realising that tears were streaming down her face full speed.
She got to her feet and ran down the corridor, not caring that she was making more noise then she thought possible. She didn't no where she was going, but she knew that she wanted to get far away from them.
But she couldn't get away from them. Mary was her room mate, and Cormac was a fellow Gryffindor. No matter how much Lyra would want to avoid them, she wouldn't be able to. They would be everywhere. The common room, breakfast, lunch, dinner, classes - there was no escaping them.
Lyra was blinded as another wave of tears streamed down her face.
"Password?" asked the Fat Lady, she sounded as though she was used to having crying girls walk up to the portrait.
"Let me in!" Lyra shouted, not remembering the password at the moment.
"Password?" The Fat Lady sounded so annoyed.
Lyra stomped her foot and growled. "Oh, I don't know - bulobuter puss!"
The portrait swung open and Lyra stormed inside, thankful that no one was in the common room. Lyra didn't bother going to the girls' dormitory, where Mary would arrive soon. Lyra went straight to the boys' where she knew that her brother would comfort her.
Lyra burst through the sixth year boys dormitory, ignoring the yelps of Frank, James, Remus, and Peter as they covered their bare chests with their sheets. Sirius stared wide eyed at his sister, who he had never seen cry before.
"Lyra? What's wrong?" Sirius demanded.
James and Remus, realising that something awful must have happened started asking questions too. Peter and Frank, on the other hand, slid under their sheets even more; feeling very awkward.
Lyra fell into her brother's arms, her body shaking uncontrollably as sobs escaped her mouth.
Only one word came out of her mouth, on name, and all of the boys knew instantly what had happened.
"Cormac."
