Everyone was aware of Nick's disappearance, and it appeared all over the Daily Prophet. The whole wizarding world was keeping a look out for the man who lost his memory.
Lyra had gotten a letter from Remus, demanding if what the Daily Prophet was saying was true, she wrote back saying it was. Lyra didn't think much of that letter. What interested her most was her son's letter.
Dear Mum,
Is it true? I don't read the Daily Prophet much, but when Lynx told me that Dad is missing I was shocked. When did this happen? How did he get up? Does he remember anything? Did he talk? Do you know where he went? What if he gets hurt?
Please answer soon, I'm going mad with the suspense. Lynx is too, she just won't admit it.
-Will-
PS: Thanks for the owl, by the way. I've named him Lemi.
Lyra had answered emmidiatly, trying to suger coat what had happened.
Dear Will,
Yes, it is true. I was very shocked when it happened as well, I was the only one who saw. It happened just a few days ago, and the Prophet already had it printed so I didn't bother writing you; I knew Lynx practically stalks the Daily Prophet.
He got up when I showed him the memory of how we first met. I don't think he knew who I was, or who he was, so he must have gotten scared and he ran away. It doesn't look as though he can talk, but the shock must have kept him silent for a moment - either way, I didn't hear him speak. No, I have no idea where he went.
Send Lynx my love and your welcome for the owl, I know you always wanted one.
-Mum-
Lyra attached the letter to Lemi's leg and watched as the brown owl soared through the window. She had been fidgety ever since Nick went missing and she wished Remus was with her to comfort her, like he did when Sirius was sent to Azkaban.
Lyra sighed heavily and walked into the kitchen, where she tried to teach herself how to cook. She still didn't cook well, but Remus had been showing her how to make minor meals, and she thought she was getting better.
Lyra closed her eyes and thought about the lasagna Nickhad made her, and she smiled peacefully.
*~*
It was almost Christmas holidays and Lyra still never found Nick. Lynx and Will were getting exetremely worried and begged that Lyra would write them every day to get an update.
At first, Lyra had many things to update about - sightings of Nick and such - but soon there was nothing to tell, and her vague letters were getting tiresome.
Dear Mum,
Lynx and I both agree that we want to go home for Christmas holidays and not stay here at Hogwarts. I know you said you had something to do but I don't think you're being very fair for our sake. We want to help you search for Dad, and we can't do that being locked up in school. Who knows? Maybe Dad might recodnise us - considering we're his kids.
Love Will
That was one letter, and Lyra could imagine her son writing this letter with a frown on his forhead and the quill being held so tightly in his hand that it might break. She would have laughed if she had seen this, but she knew it took alot to get Will fustrated.
It was obvious that Will was trying not to be rude, but he was being rude nonetheless.
But that wasn't what botheres Lyra. Her son Will always forgived her so easily, because he knew that sometimes Lyra had a hard time raising two kids by herself with no help. What bothered Lyra was the second letter Lemi had delivered to her.
By the swirly, neat writing on the front, Lyra knew instantly that it was from her daughter, Lynx.
Lynx was differant from Will. When she was angry, she didn't bother to hold it in - not even with Lyra. Lynx thought that everything should be fair, and Lyra knew very well that she wasn't being fair. Lynx was a tough one to raise, and Lyra felt a stab of sympathy for her own mother - the first and last time that feeling will be directed at Walburga Black - because Lyra knew that, no matter how fustrating Lynx was, Lyra had to be ten times worst.
Lynx grew up with a loving mother who spoiled her and a big brother who knew not to cross the line, so other than having her father not know her, Lynx had a pretty good life. Lyra, on the other hand, grew up with a suck-up little brother, a mother who felt the need to control everyone, and a father who wanted to intimidate everyone. Lyra had a bad childhood, which meant that she had a pretty rebellious personality - so Lyra knew she was worst then her daughter, so she never complained.
Lyra opened her daughter letter and sighed at the first to words. "Hello Mother."
Lynx never sent her letters like that. It was always 'dear Mum', just like Will's. When Lynx said Mother, it was always in a sarcastic way, as though she couldn't be bothered to call Lyra by her proper title, because she was obviousle bothered by her.
Lyra shook her head in disdain at her daughter's antics.
Hello Mother,
I've read over Will's letter before he could send it and I don't think he got his point across. We did agree that it will be fair to let us go home these holdiays. Other then the minor fact that it's CHRISTMAS holidays, which is a time for family I hear, our father seems to have gone missing with no memory of who he is.
So we're going home whether you like it or not. This isn't about you, this is about Dad. So if you have some important, secret thing you have to do over the holidays then you can do that. I'm twelve and Will is thirteen, we are perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, thank you.
So expect us to be on the platform.
Love forever,
Lynx
If Lyra thought that Will's letter was rude, it was nothing compared to Lynx's. Lyra found herself very offended at being talked to like that by her daughter, and she refrained herself from going into the blood red drawer which was filled with Howlers.
Lyra had never sent her children a Howler, not even when Lynx had turned her teacher's wig purple, but she did keep the Howler drawer there to threaten them with; and she found it amusing how every time she mentioned it, Will would shiver and Lynx would pale slightly.
Lyra grabbed a regular letter and put her ink to the paper.
Dear my darling children,
Will, I am terribley sorry, but - like I said when I saw you off at the beginning of the school year - I have to say that you cannot come home for reasons I can't tell you.
Lynx. Like I have just told your brother, you will not be coming home these christmas holidays. If you arrive at the platform then I can assure you that both me or Remus will NOT be there to pick you up. And if you somehow find a way to my house then I will not let you in - because I won't be there.
Now this part is for both of you, Will and Lynx. Next time I get such rude letters from either of you, I will go to the Howler drawer and I WILL write you one. So please refrain yourselves from being so rude to your MOTHER. Do I make myself clear? Good.
Love,
Mum
Lyra sent the letter off with Lemi.
