This isn't quite like the other books I wrote, so don't be surprised at how the time jumps ahead a couple of months or even years. Each chapter is about an important event in Lyra's life.

PROLOGUE

Orion and Walburga Black sat proudly in their family room, where their family had come to congratulate them with their two beautiful babies. Orion Black was holding his daughter in his arms and was holding her up slightly so he could show off her beauty in a subtle way. Walburga Black wasn't so subtle, she had sat her son on her lap so everyone could see his already handsome face.

"They are simply darling," said Druella Black, Orion's sister-in-law. "I'm sure they will bring honor to the name of Black."

"Well, of course they will," Walburga bragged. "Lyra and Sirius Black, you will see their name everywhere!"

There was a loud bang and three girls ran into the room.

"Bellatrix!" Druella admonished. "What have you done now?"

"I wanted a cake and you said no," the eight year old said, glaring at her mother. "So I got it by myself."

Bellatrix was tall and skinny, she had dark hair and eyes, with pale skin. She glared at her mother with her heavily lidded eyes, her red lips in a pout.

"What was that bang?" Druella demanded.

"Cake exploded!" the smallest girl of the three said. She was four years old and had blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. "Cake explode! Cake explode!"

"Is Narcissa telling the truth, Bellatrix?" Cygnus Black asked his daughter, wrapping his arm around Druella, his wife.

"No," Bellatrix lied, her glare deepening.

"Bella's lying Daddy!" the six year old cried, her dark eyes widening. She flicked her light brown hair behind her ear when Bellatrix glared at her. "The cake went 'boom'!"

"I am so sorry Walburga," Druella apologized when her husband went into the kitchen with his three daughters to clean up the mess. "Bellatrix has been showing signs of magic all year."

"At eight?" Orion looked impressed. "That's a young age."

"Well, she's very talented," Druella said proudly. "I hope Narcissa and Dromeda end up just like her."

"She is a pretty little thing, isn't she?" Walburga said, finally eecepting the fact that no one was fauning over her babies anymore. "But of course, all of your daughters are beautiful."

"And so are your children," Druella replied. "Do you plan on having more?"

"Just one more," Walburga admitted. "I don't want a full house."

"Well you do have the room," Druella said.

"Do you plan on haviing more?" Orion asked, before his wife could name all the rooms in Grimmuald.

"Oh no, my three girls are enough for me," Druella said with a laugh.

"Don't you want your name to be carried down through generations?" Walburga asked, looking scandalized.

"Well I see no use for it!" Druella said, pointing at Walburga's son, Sirius. "He can carry the name down all he wants! I must admit though, I was a little worried that you weren't going to have children."

"I wasn't," Walburga admitted. "But that didn't stop me from being excited when  I actually did."

"Yes, all children are a gift," Druella signed with a smile.

"Well, not all," Orion disagreed. "My brother, Alphard, has been a mistake since the day he was born."

"There is always a bad egg in the family," Druella said dryly.

"Yes," Walburga wrinkled her nose at the mention of her brother and law. "And let's hope our children aren't it."
