Death

It was weird to die.

It wasn't painful, it didn't even make you feel cold or warm. It was. . . normal.

As Sirius stood behind the veil of death, looking on, he realised just how incredibly stupid he had been.

"SIRIUS!" Lyra and Lynx had yelled.

He should have ducked and rolled out of the way the second he heard that. His sister had sounded so frightened.

Now she sounded so miserable. She was sobbing on the floor in front of the veil, not even caring that she looked so weak and fragile. She sounded so lost and scared and so much. . . in pain.

Sirius wished that he hadn't been stupid while he was alive. If he was smart, he would have told everyone he was sorry. Hadn't he learned the day James and Lily died that you should always tell people how you feel before it was too late?

Had he been so blinded by his own misery that he hadn't realised that his death might cause the same misery?

He wished he could step through the veil and apologize. Apologize to everyone, even the people who thought he did them no wrong. But he did. He did wrong to everyone in the room.

He was sorry, Tonks. Sorry for never visiting you.

He was sorry, Dumbledore. Sorry for never listening to you.

He was sorry, Remus. Sorry for pushing you away.

He was sorry, Harry. Sorry for not being there when he needed him the most.

But most of all. He was sorry, Lyra.

"I'm sorry for hurting you," Sirius whispered, wishing she heard him.

But she wouldn't hear him. He wasn't there to wrap his arms around her and comfort her until she smiled her beautiful smile. He was gone. He was gone without saying good-bye. And that would kill her, just as much as it was killing him now.

He was gone. Gone from the world. He would never have his freedom.

"Sirius," said a voice behind him, a voice Sirius never thought he'd hear ever again. "Took you long enough."

Sirius turned around, a wide grin on his face. "James."

James gave him a playful glare, though there was sadness in his eyes. Sirius could tell he had been watching Lyra. James never liked watching Lyra be sad, he hardly ever had to see it, but every time he did it was like a punch in the gut.

"Who did you expect? Merlin?" James asked.

"You caught me. I should never have had my hopes up like that," Sirius said. "Imagine my dissappointment when it was just you."

James rolled his eyes but grinned. "Come on, Padfoot, Lily has missed you."

"Lily," Sirius mused, it was too good to be true.

"Yeah, Lily," James grinned, gesturing behind him where a brilliant white light was glowing behind him.

Sirius smiled and they walked towards the light, arms around eachother's shoulders, like brothers.
