There are two types of fashion people—those who love to shop and those who, more than anything, just love fashion. This group is more likely to nerd out over the details of a piece—hems, sleeve styles, embellishment, etc.—than merely the label that created it. Fashion, in their eyes, is a full-fledged art.
I love to shop and love fashion, to be honest, but fitting in with the second crew has required some extra studying over time. If you've never designed clothes or gone to fashion school, it's easy to miss out on some crucial fashion terminology. However, I've picked up on the most oft-used terms and are happily filling you in, below!
KNIFE PLEAT
a sharp narrow fold created by doubling fabric back upon itselfBUSTLE
a frame or pad to support and expand the fullness of the back of a woman's skirtEPAULET
an ornamental shoulder piece, typically on a military-style coat or jacketDOLMAN SLEEVE
a full sleeve that is very wide at the arm hole and narrow at the wristGAITER
a piece of fabric worn over the shoe, extending to the ankle or sometimes the kneeDIRNDL SKIRT
a full, wide skirt with a tightly fitted waistlineMINAUDIÈRE
a small, decorative handbag without straps or a handleYOKE
a pattern piece fitted around the neck and shoulders or around the hips to provide support for the looser parts of the itemTROMPE LŒIL
