Shawnie's POV
After Chris left, Drake and I went into my office and sat down. I wasn't supposed to meet with him. I was supposed to meet with his team. So, needless to say, I was irritated... again.
Why does he keep doing this? It's starting to get annoying. I keep expecting a real meeting, but he keeps canceling. I mean, I'm getting paid either way, but no actual business is getting handled. Does he even want me on the team? Or is this just some elaborate excuse to keep showing up here? It's like he doesn't mind paying me to sit in this office and talk.
Drake leaned back in the chair across from my desk, studying me with that quiet little smirk he always seemed to wear.
"You might want to fix your hair a little."
I blinked at him. "What?"
He tilted his head toward my computer screen, and I glanced at my reflection in the black screen and immediately reached up to smooth my hair down. Heat crept up my neck.
Embarrassing.
But...if I'm being honest...kind of worth it. Still, it can't happen again. That was completely unprofessional. If that had been his team instead of him walking in—I pushed the thought away.
"So," I said, forcing a polite smile. "What happened? It's just you...again."
"Yep. Just me," he smiled.
"Why?"
He shrugged casually. "I told them not to come."
My smile disappeared.
"You canceled the meeting?"
"I postponed it."
"For what reason?"
His eyes held mine. "I wanted to spend some time with you."
I stared at him. "You can't be serious."
His smirk deepened. "I'm always serious."
I sighed and leaned back in my chair. "Drake—"
"It's Aubrey." He said it softly but firmly.
"Aubrey," I corrected myself, already annoyed. "What exactly are you trying to do here?"
"I told you before. I want to get to know you."
I shook my head, and he watched me for a moment.
"I got your number from Billy," he continued. "But I didn't call you. You told me not to contact you unless it was business."
"So you had Billy schedule another meeting," I finished.
"Exactly."
He leaned forward slightly.
"I didn't expect to walk in on you and your boyfriend having sex."
My stomach tightened.
"But," he added calmly, "I can look past that."
I cleared my throat.
"I apologize for that."
"No need. That was very unprofessional."
He leaned back again, studying me like he was trying to solve a puzzle.
"Everyone has a past."
I folded my arms across my chest. "Aubrey, I'm in a serious relationship with Chris."
"I know."
He said it without hesitation.
"You also know how the media works. Every week, there's a new story about him and another woman."
