Saiki waited as the midwife tended to his wife in labour. Her screams of agony were unbearable for him to hear, but he knew it would go well.
After all, he did travel through time to find out.
Even when he knew everything would go well, and his Mikia would handle it with no problem, he still couldn't help feeling worried for her safety.
He sat down on the chair, his elbows digging into his thighs and his chin resting on tightly crossed fingers. It still felt painful to listen to those screams, though Mikia had it way worse.
He stood up and paced back and forth in front of the room that the midwife was in with Mikia. He gritted his teeth as he nervously played with the pale strands of his hair. At one point, he thought he'd accidentally rip it off his head.
Another much high-pitched cry was heard, followed by the door finally opening. The midwife came out with a smile.
"She's fine, and so is your newly born son," the woman said with a smile. "They're both on the bed. I'll make arrangements for his documents."
Saiki nodded and ran to his wife on the bed. She was still in some pain but had a wide smile on her face, a sleeping baby in her arms. Saiki smiled and took his son into his hands.
"He looks just like you, Sai," Mikia said, smiling at her husband. "The same aquamarine eyes, the same pale hair. He's just like you!"
"But he has your smile," Saiki said, lightly poking his finger on the baby's soft face. "See?"
Saiki went closer to his wife and gave her a half-handed hug with the baby in one arm.
'Now Ash's life doesn't depend on me anymore,' Saiki thought. 'And I bet he won't hesitate to kill me now as soon as he sees me.'
He gulped and looked back at his wife, then at his baby. He soon forgot about what Ash might do to him and started tending to them instead.
"Rest, Miki, you had a hard time pushing this little one out of you..." Saiki said, pinching his baby's cheek. The baby immediately started crying. "Oh no... calm down, little one, daddy's got you."
"He must be hungry," Mikia said with a small smile. "Here, I'll feed him."
"With what?" Saiki asked, confused.
Mikia playfully squinted her eyes at him. He immediately understood and nodded sheepishly.
"I'll get you something to eat," Saiki said, handing the baby over to her. "Don't sweat it, Miki. I'll get you something that will make you feel better."
"Well, nothing could make me feel better than this little guy," Mikia said, smiling as she fed her baby.
Saiki smiled and left the mother and son alone. He headed over to the kitchen to see what he could give his wife. He scratched his head, trying to figure out what was the best thing to give a woman who newly gave birth.
He greatly wished he had Shion's phone now to search up an answer. Well, he didn't know that the phone wouldn't even connect to Internet in this era. He thought it was magic!
Saiki didn't realise that the midwife was still there. She had waited for him to leave the room so that she could talk to him about taking care of his wife, but he totally forgot about her. She spoke to Mikia and now looked for Saiki. But he sorta disregarded her.
"Hmph, what a rude man!" The midwife retorted, crossing her arms as Saiki walked past her without even looking.
She stomped after him into the kitchen and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Mr. Saiki, I expected a little bit more of graciousness for helping your wife to give birth to your son!" The midwife said, annoyed with Saiki. He turned around, confused and just realised that she hasn't left.
"You haven't left yet...?" Saiki asked, confused. "I thought your work here is done?"
"It won't be done until you paid me!" The midwife said, annoyed. "Honestly, you thought I'd do it for free?"
Saiki turned red from embarrassment and went to get money for her payment. Of course, he thanked her multiple times before he saw her off. She gave him some advice to take care of Mikia and left.
"Phew at least we got that one over with..." Saiki said to himself as he closed his door and reentered his home. "Note to self, never ignore a midwife."
He returned to the kitchen and decided to make some chicken soup. The midwife did mention that it would be good for her.
Saiki was kinda glad that his mother had thought him how to cook. He stirred the soup as he smelled the tasty aroma of it.
"Smells like it needs some salt," a voice was heard behind him.
Saiki realised that it was his wife and turned around in surprise. She was standing there with their baby in her arms.
"You can walk already?" Saiki asked in surprise.
"Of course," Mikia said. "I gave birth, not lost my legs. Besides, you've been taking forever."
She went towards him and reached for the salt after giving him their baby. She added some salt and stirred the pot.
"Mmm, not bad, Sai," Mikia said, tasting the soup. "Just that you forgot to add salt."
"I was gonna add it eventually," Saiki defended, cradling the baby in his arms. "Also, you should sit down. By the sound of your screams, giving birth is not easy."
"It will never be," Mikia said, taking the baby back from her husband. "Anyway, I'll be waiting."
She walked out of the kitchen and went to the living room to wait for him. Saiki soon came with the food.
Saiki was very happy for the new family member and spent the rest of evening going around the town, announcing his new son.
"I've never seen anyone this happy before," one of the townsmen said. "I'm very happy for you, Saiki."
Saiki went home and had a small meal with his wife before going to sleep. They put the baby between them to ensure that he would be safe.
Mikia made sure that her new baby was fast asleep before falling asleep herself. Saiki was already peacefully asleep.
Or so he thought...
