Sam had broken his promise.

At first, Keilani and Sam had texted every day and she had gone to visit him at the motel often while his family packed and began looking for houses in Kentucky. But the texts slowly started slowing down, and while Keilani tried her best, Sam eventually just stopped replying. When Keilani went to visit him at the motel on her usual Wednesday, she discovered an empty motel room and no notice goodbye.

That stung, but Keilani still had an inkling of hope. Maybe maybe he would text her once he got settled in Kentucky.

But that text never came. And when she saw Sam posting on Facebook, Keilani came to the saddening realization that maybe Sam just didn't want to talk to her.

When that happened, Keilani tried doing everything she could do to distract herself. She began working at the Lima Bean, spent lots of time with her Glee friends but especially Mercedes and Kurt, and used any remaining moments to hang out with her family. There was no reason for Keilani to be as hurt as she was.

After all, her and Sam were never really together, were they?

Those thoughts didn't stop Keilani's heart from cracking every time she thought about all the moments the two shared in their sophomore year. Keilani's feelings for Sam never really went away over the summer, much to her dismay. However, instead of wondering if Sam liked her back or not like she did for most of her sophomore year, Keilani was now asking why Sam had just dropped her like that.

Keilani had only told Mercedes and Kurt, but Keanu had managed to figure out something was up and confronted her about it near the end of summer. He could tell something was off with the amount of sad love songs he could hear her playing and small comments Mercedes would make. The tipping point, however, was the time he heard her watch Tangled four times in a single day and, what's worse, heard her quietly sobbing every time the "I See the Light" scene came on.

Outside of those three, Keilani didn't really want to tell anyone, especially Glee kids, what had happened with them. While Keilani had always been someone to keep her problems to herself, she especially didn't want all her friends to look at Sam in a negative light. She kept this pain balled up inside of her, and tried to only let it out when she knew she was alone.

So stepping into her junior year, Keilani's heart wasn't exactly in the best of places, but she was determined to have a better year. She had just barely stepped into the entrance of McKinley on the first day when she felt herself being tugged away from the main hallway.

"I wouldn't go down there if I were you," Mercedes advised as she pulled Keilani down a quieter passageway. "JBI's bad enough, but he just cornered me and after interrogating me about my future, he asked where I could find you and ask you about what happened with 'Hobo McBeiber.' I only got out of there because Keanu saved me and managed to convince him that Santana was much more interesting to talk to."
