keilani had always been the quiet one.
her freshman year, she had barely spoken a word up until her glee club audition. how could she when she was constantly getting shoved into lockers, getting slushies thrown in her face, pushed around, and being mercilessly teased by cheerios? it always became worse when she tried to fight back, so it came to a point where she could get through the whole school day without saying a single thing. she hated her life and felt invisible to the point where she felt like practically no one would care if she was there or not.
that was up until she had encountered mercedes jones and kurt hummel and they convinced her to audition the glee club.
the glee club was amazing because she had found some of her best friends. even if she wasn't the closest with some of the members, she had somewhat always remained on good terms. she had made fast friends with tina and mike. becoming friends with the unholy trinity, especially brittany, had made her less of a target for getting shoved around. and of course there was kurt and mercedes, who had become two of her best friends and she loved more than anything.
she loved performing, especially singing, and she was finally glad to have a space where she could do that. outside of that room, she could barely hold a conversation. it had gotten better since the beginning of freshman year, but it was still bad. but inside that room or with any of those people? she started to feel like she could be herself.
but the glee club wasn't perfect. the combination of mr shue's favoritism, the sheer amount of talent in the club, and keilani's inability to really fight back when she wanted something made it impossible for her to have her moment in the spotlight.
the funny thing was, keilani didn't mind that most of the time. sure, she would like to have more than just a few little solos here and there, but she always happy to be supporting her insanely talented friends.
but there was a few times when she just wanted a little bit more. when she wanted her moment in the sun and that praise shone upon her. it hurt a little bit every day when she saw her fellow glee club members get constant praise and love, meanwhile keilani seemed to be hiding off to the side, waiting for the day that that would be her.
it didn't help that her siblings were as close to perfection as two people could be. keanu was a year older and was an amazing football player, a good student, and had an amazingly kind personality to match. naia was only 10 but had managed to build up 10x the amount of confidence that keilani had and was destined to become a member of cheerios when she reached high school.
but it wasn't like she hated her family or anything that. her family had so much love in it, and keilani sometimes loved her home more than her school because she knew she could always be herself and she would be loved unconditionally. her family was the only thing that kept her afloat the start of her freshman year, and she knew that if it weren't for them then things would be very different now.
despite her best efforts though, keilani's insecurities would always come rushing in. she felt like she was constantly hiding in everyone's shadows.
and she was worried that she would never have the confidence to pull herself out.
