"Keilani, what on Earth are you doing?"
"Just trust me on this!"
Dragging Mercedes by the arm, Keilani couldn't help but giggle as she pulled her best friend towards the football field. Prom was that Saturday, and there were still a few people in the school who didn't have dates. Mercedes hadn't said much about it, but Keilani could tell that her best friend was upset at the prospect of having to go to prom without at a date.
Fortunately, Keilani had just spent the better part of two weeks convincing her brother to work up the courage to ask the girl he's liked since freshman year to the prom.
The pair stopped near the middle of the field, and Mercedes' mouth dropped in surprise when she found herself standing in front of an incredibly nervous Keanu. He was holding a bouquet of flowers that Keilani had told him were her best friend's favorites, and when Keilani looked closely, she could see his hands shaking from nerves.
"Keilani..." Mercedes asked slowly, her eyes darting back and forth between the two siblings. "What's going on? Did you set me up with your brother?"
Keilani shook her head. "Trust me, he would've probably asked you even if we weren't siblings."
This confused Mercedes even more, and Keanu took a step forward, taking a deep breath before finally admitting what he had been hiding for years now.
"Mercedes...I've liked you since we sat together in Mr. Martin's freshman year English class and you couldn't stop laughing about how stupid all the characters in The Great Gatsby were. And I know I seem like this confident guy most of the time, but, as Keilani can verify, my brain kind of short-circuits when I'm around you."
"Are...are you serious?"
"Dead serious." Keanu took a deep breath. "You're so incredibly funny and kind, and you have one of the most incredible voices I've heard. Plus it doesn't help you're one of the prettiest girls in the whole school. So I was really hoping you'd come with me to the prom. And...if you want to at the end of the night...we could maybe be more than friends?"
"I'd...I'd love too," Mercedes answered eagerly, earning a wide grin out of Keanu. Still in disbelief though, Mercedes turned to look at Keilani. "And you're okay with this?"
"Are you kidding? I've been so excited for this promposal all day, and I've been trying to help Keanu figure out how to admit his feelings for months now." Keilani pointed at Mercedes, and then pivoted on her heel to also point at Keanu. "However, if you either of you breaks the other's heart, I will kill you in your sleep. You're two of the most important people in my life, and I don't want either of you to get hurt. Are we clear?"
The two nodded, and Keilani couldn't help but notice the shy looks the two were sneaking each other. "I'm going to let you two be..." She shot the pair a thumbs up as she ran away from the field, leaving the embarrassed pair behind her. "Have fun!"
