i boarded the knight bus in a hurry,
holding myself still to the beds underneath me.
i had my fair share of experiences with this bus,
and i knew holding on was deadly important.
i looked around to see who else was boarded,
and found an old woman who seemed to be sleeping peacefully in one bed,
and a girl not far from where i sat.
she was beautiful,
and i found myself gaping at her features.
she held a book in her hand and was completely unfazed by the wild driving around us.
when she looked up and our eyes locked,
time immediately slowed around me;
i found myself lost in the depths of her eyes.
and suddenly,
i had felt safer than ever before.
it was as if she was a guardian angel sent to protect me.
and i didn't even know her name.
her lips curved into an amazing smile and i could die right then and be content with the life i lead.
all because she smiled at me.
"might wanna take a picture. they last longer, you know."
i chuckled and rubbed my now burning neck,
"s-sorry. just thought i knew you from somewhere."
"well, i would hope not. unless you've been stalking me and followed me here."
her bright smile and joking tone sent my cheeks into a pink hue.
"you're american?"
"i am. born and raised."
"then what are you doing...here?"
"long story short, i moved. but things happened and here i am."
i nodded,
completely dazed by her smooth tone.
"then you'll be attending hogwarts soon?"
"i should be, yes. do you go?"
i nodded and she smiled wider,
if possible,
"great. it's been lovely meeting you...?"
"harry. harry potter."
"y/n l/n."
so now my guardian angel had a name.
and it heightened this divine look of her.
"can i ask where you're getting off?"
i asked.
i knew my stop was soon,
but i couldn't let her go.
i didn't think i'd last having to wait another few months to cross her again.
"leaky cauldron, i suppose. you?"
i sat back in relief.
because i wouldn't have to wait.
she was there and fate was playing with me and not against me for the first time.
"me too."

i helped her heave her luggage into the leaky cauldron,
trying to become as much of a gentleman as i could.
"thank you, mr potter. you're the best, did you know?"
i laughed,
"i've heard that a time or two."
"ooh, really? cocky, aren't we?"
she grinned playfully and left me in a blushing, numb mess.
this girl had quite the pull on me,
and i accepted it with no hesitation.
y/n had no knowledge of my "fame" here,
and i loved it.
being a mystery to one was something i longed for.
and here she stood before me,
her beauty resting to my eyes and keeping me safe.
"there's only one room,"
i heard tom say sternly.
"okay...but there's two of us who need a room."
"look, kid, maybe they don't teach math well in america so let me explain this as simply as i can for you. no two rooms, only one."
y/n rolled her eyes and crossed her arms against her chest,
"undermining a complete strangers intelligence is just a reflection of your own insecurity,"
she looked at his name tag,
"tom. my knowledge in math exceeds well past the average kid my age. i suppose i could do your job blindfolded."
tom muttered beneath his breath,
hearing the words "bratty, stupid american girl"
sent my hands into fists.
i felt the sudden urge to protect the girl and any harm thrown her way.
and tom,
though having saved my arse before,
was on the brink of a beating so bloody i'm sure i'd be sent to azkaban.
but y/n kept her composure and smiled at the man with a smile so charming,
i could see his expression soften.
"but, anyhow, i apologize for any disruption. i'll take the key, please."
tom placed the keys in her hands.
and then as she turned to look at me,
my heart began to speed.
"looks like you and i are gonna be roommates."
"b-brilliant."
she laughed breathlessly,
sending the air out of my lungs,
then she nodded.
"yeah..brilliant."
as we walked to our room,
i couldn't help but find myself longing to hear her soft voice,
"so, you're pretty intelligent?"
"maybe to some. but, between me and you, i'm pretty shitty with math."
i laughed louder than i intended to,
and y/n just laughed along with me.
***
y/n laid the spare blanket on the floor after having cleaned best to her ability,
and she laid flat on her back.
i sat up from the bed and looked down at her,
"you sleep in the bed, i'll sleep down there."
"don't worry, mr potter. i'm fine right here. the firmness is good for a stiff back, you know?"
i chuckled and admired every inch of her,
within reason of course.
her eyelashes were long and brushed her brow bone,
and her eyes were doused in this wonderful tone of enchantment,
her skin seemed to seep with nothing but bliss,
and i couldn't stop myself from falling.
"suppose you would have a stiff back. those knight bus' beds aren't quite comfortable."
she giggled and shook her head,
"not in the slightest!"
"how about we switch off? you sleep there tonight, then tomorrow night i'll sleep there. sound good?"
"sounds like a plan."
***
for the first night in years,
my nightmares disappeared.
i woke up feeling as rested as i had ever felt,
and beamed with excitement for the day head.
i looked down to see y/n,
where she laid still in her sleep.
but her hair stuck to her face as though she had been sweating,
and for some odd reason it troubled me.
the room itself was cold,
and i could only imagine how much colder it was on the floor.
i reached down and let the back of my fingers trail down her entirely too chilled arm,
making me shiver.
her eyes fluttered open just the slightest,
but enough for me to see how bloodshot and worried they were.
"come lay in the bed, y/n."
she mumbled something,
which made me laugh softly.
i then crawled down and picked her up in my arms,
laying her in the spot where i had been previously.
i watched as her frozen body melted beneath the covers and in the already warmed spot.
she looked somehow even more beautiful.
and seeing her in such a vulnerable state made me pine for her.
i had never loved enough to have a soft spot,
up until now.

when she woke up,
i was at the foot of the bed and stroking hedwig.
"did i wake you?"
i asked her,
watching as she stretched the sleep out from her muscles.
"no, no. you're fine. thank you for moving me up here."
"yeah. you were cold."
she laughed and then got up,
heading to begin our day together.
***
y/n and i spent the day playing minor pranks and eating with one another.
my infatuation for her was well past the normal,
and i couldn't decide whether it had become creepy or...flattering.
i suppose y/n would be the judge of that.
she laid in the bed while i laid on the floor,
and i could hear her constant shuffling.
"you okay?"
i whispered,
but received no reply.
"stop,"
she spoke abruptly.
"stop what?"
"no....no...stop!"
"what are you talking about?"
"please!"
i sat up and watched as she jerked around in her sleep,
the thin sheet of sweat laying to her skin.
i hurried to sit next to her and gently awoke her,
painfully watching until her eyes shot open.
she gasped and clutched her chest,
panting.
y/n then looked to me and i watched her body relax into the mattress.
this small gesture made my heart soar.
she found comfort in me.
i provided security for her as she did for me.
"it's just a dream."
"i know,"
she breathed out with the sleep heavy in her voice.
her hand laced itself with mine and my skin began to tingle.
i brushed the hair from her face and kissed her knuckles softly,
easing her fear and letting my heart swell.
"can you lay with me, mr potter?"
i chuckled and nodded,
laying myself down for her.
y/n laid her head to my chest and rested our connected hands to my lower abdomen,
where her light breathing could be felt brushing against my fingers.
i nearly shivered at all this contact with y/n.
i felt victorious in this moment.
y/n sought comfort in me,
all while keeping me grounded and light.
my guardian angel.
