y/n tapped the end of her pencil against the table under her,
finding comfort in the consistent banging.
her nerves were shot,
and they were only becoming worse as snape examined the room with a scowl on his face.
"y/l, stop with that obnoxious noise for gods sake,"
draco groaned in her ear rather dramatically.
"sorry,"
she whispered back and laid her pencil down to rest,
resorting to peeling the skin off of her lip.
draco eyed the girl and noticed her tense position,
and watched as the colors changed in her lips from the new bleeding.
"the bloody hell is wrong with you?"
y/n turned her head to face him and shrugged,
"there's just a lot going on."
"you look a lot worse than the mudblood girl on test day."
he laughed to himself though y/n found no humor in his comment.
"you're a poor excuse for a human, you know."
draco shrugged at her comment,
"what? it's true, no? she's a mudblood."
y/n's eyes shot through draco.
if looks could kill,
draco knew he'd be way past dead.
"shut it."
he scoffed then turn to the front of the class,
letting the occasional breeze engulf him in y/n's fragrant aroma.
he'd never admit it aloud,
but her scent was calming and offered him peace from the usual smell of the dungeons.
if he could bottle her lovely redolence up and carry it around with him,
he surely would.
"say, y/n, let's make a bet."
y/n looked at him again and forced him to face her beauty.
how odd.
she is beautiful.
"a bet?"
"yeah. i'll bet ten galleons your friend potter, the complete nutter, will be in azkaban by the end of the year."
draco was amused at her look of horror,
sending a grin across his lips.
"you're delusional."
"am i? or am i just honest? see, y/n, i think that's your issue,"
he began with a look of satisfaction and twirled his quill around his fingers.
"you deny such simple facts, though they're obviously true."
"because they're foul!"
"maybe, but still true nonetheless."
y/n was beyond annoyed with his smug attitude,
making her quick to roll her eyes.
"you're too good for those friends of yours. you're pureblood. you belong with us."
he shrugged,
"weasley, i can understand. he's a lowlife. but you? you have it all. and yet you waste time with them because...?"
y/n clenched her fists at her side until her knuckles were turning a noticeable shade lighter.
"i see, i see. it's charity work. isn't it? you hang with them, make them feel good about themselves, maybe offer them a little money. then you've secured your one way ticket to heaven."
y/n shifted in her seat to force her whole body to face him,
"you're a wretched being. you're pathetic, and i'd rather claw my eyes out than spend another second conversing with you,"
she spat with such malice,
draco couldn't help but to grin all over again.
she exited the class in quite a hurry,
leaving the boy to wonder if it was true.
if she really would rather scratch her eyes out than talk to him again.
he'd admit,
toying around with y/n had caused a great deal of entertainment.
never speaking to her again sounded harsh;
sounded unlikely.
now that draco had gotten a taste,
he wasn't going to be quick to let her go.
not that easily.
so he decided he'd lay off the girl.
maybe her sickly friends too.
though it would take everything within him to curl back those retorts,
he figured it'd be worth it in the end when y/n finally came around again.
and they'd banter towards one another with no feelings involved,
other than the feelings draco tried so desperately to bury and suppress.
"until next year, y/n,"
he muttered to himself with a grin,
watching her throw her head back in laughter.
soon he would be on the receiving end of that laughter,
and it'd be the greatest achievement of his sixth year.

y/n steadied herself in her potions class,
in a different surrounding than the class prior,
and sat a little taller this year.
sixth year.
she thought proudly.
it wasn't until the cologne burned her nose that she remembered exactly where she was.
and just the same as year five,
draco took his seat next to her.
y/n had to admit,
he had grown somewhat attractive over the holiday.
he was taller now,
his pale blonde hair shadowing his forehead,
though his skin remained washed out,
it began to suit him.
he was maturing into his features,
leaving him almost breathtaking.
"y/l, see the holidays did you well,"
he grinned,
noticing her gaze.
"malfoy, see you're still an arrogant prick."
"oh,"
he laughed,
dragging out his syllables and placing a hand on his heart in mock hurt,
"not very nice."
"i don't owe you any sympathy."
he nodded with a shrug,
"no, you don't. i'll play nice this year, promise."
y/n rolled her eyes,
"yeah, right."
"so quick to doubt,"
he grinned and brushed her arm that laid on the desk with the back of his fingers,
feeling the smooth skin rise with goosebumps under his touch.
her reaction was almost euphoric to draco,
sending waves of lust to gather within his gut.
"alright."
she shrugged.
draco was surprised to see her voice hadn't wavered in the slightest.
while she was able to keep her composure vocally,
draco could see her coming undone while the tips of his fingers continued to stroke up and down her arm.
she shivered beneath his cold, smooth touch and bounced her foot sporadically,
trying to calm the racing heart that draco was sure to hear.
"you're laying it on thick, malfoy."
she breathed shakily.
"am i? i apologize,"
he spoke through his grin and retrieved his hand,
resting it just inched away from hers.
"since i'm..apologizing, i suppose it would only be fair if i make it known how...sorry i am for upsetting you about your friends."
she turned her head slowly to find his eyes,
"but you're not sorry you insulted them?"
"oh, no. not in the slightest. would you rather me lie and tell you i am?"
y/n lowered her head with a laugh,
and draco felt his heart stutter at the sound.
it had only been mere minutes and here he was,
on the receiving end of her laugh.
it was angelic,
musical even.
it made his thoughts soar wildly.
"you're unbelievable,"
she spoke though draco could barely hear over the staccato of his racing heart.
"maybe."
her grin mirrored his,
leaving him only seconds to admire their matched expressions.
until she turned away with heat overwhelming her body,
beginning their work for the day.
***
draco and y/n had gotten considerably close within the passing weeks.
though y/n was quick to argue with him about his prejudices,
his malicious insults,
and his smug attitude,
they were able to joke around from time to time.
it was nice,
they agreed,
to have a friend outside of their usual friend group.
one who shared different opinions and values and was able to vocalize them,
even if draco was quick to dismiss them.
but y/n had become attracted to draco in a way she would have never imagined.
and draco found himself in the same predicament.
he was attached.
seeing y/n eased everything within him.
whether that was seeing her from across the great hall,
walking past her class,
and his favorite;
sitting next to her,
it was all relaxing to wallow in her scent and allow it to become a part of him as well.
