"happy birthday!"
the common room yelled as y/n walked in,
her laugh loud and wholesome.
"guys!"
she smiled as she took notice of the banner and decorations around her.
"you're too kind."
"had to celebrate for you, y/n."
she hugged all the friends around her and tried to blow out the candles in the cake,
but failed to do so continuously.
"what the hell?"
she laughed and looked up to see fred and george snickering,
"this was you two, huh?"
"glad to see you caught on,"
said george,
"yeah, y/n, was getting quite sad to see you blowing so hard,"
fred spoke.
y/n laughed loudly and shot them a not so friendly gesture before clearing the common room in search of cedric.
she saw him walking out of the great hall with a cupcake in his hand.
"oh! there you are, i was just coming to find you,"
he smiled at the sight of y/n,
and handed her the cupcake.
"happy birthday my love,"
she giggled and blew out the singular candle,
removing it and throwing it away.
y/n grabbed a bit of frosting on her index finger and placed it on cedrics nose,
their laughs ringing through the corridor.
cedric and y/n continued to smear frosting on each other's face,
soon being interrupted.
"you both are unbelievably disgusting."
their laughs died at the sight of snape,
his lip curling.
"oh... uh-sorry professor."
y/n spoke.
"yes, i would hope. just because it's your birthday today, l/n, doesn't give you an excuse to act like more of a fool than you usually do. now run off before i give you both detention."
they did as instructed and ran down to an empty corridor where snape wouldn't bother them.
"here lets clean up,"
cedric laughed,
the wave of his wand clearing them of their mess.
she split the cupcake between the two,
although cedric refused on account of,
"it's your birthday! it's your cupcake!"
but here they sat,
eating and giggling.
"so what do you say you meet me for lunch?"
"planning something, are we?"
"of course!"
"where to?"
"can i surprise you?"
"yes, you can."
he pressed a kiss to her lips and rose to his feet,
telling her to meet him at the front doors in the evening.
she walked to where her friends sat in the great hall and began to converse with them.
"y/n, can i talk to you?"
cho asked at her side.
y/n,
still smiling and excited,
nodded and walked to where they could talk in private.
"it's about cedric."
"oh! is he alright?"
y/n asked a little worried,
her eyebrows furrowing.
"yes, yes he's fine. it's uh... i heard.. well y/n i heard he's planning to break up with you,"
cho spoke,
fumbling with her hands.
y/n's face dropped.
"wh-what?"
"yeah.."
"who told you this?"
"cedric was talking to dean about it and i overheard them."
"you're sure that's what you heard?"
"positive. he said he's planning to take you to hogsmeade and break up with you there."
"wow... thank you, cho."
"of course. i'm sorry,"
the girl sighed and patted y/n's arm before walking out of view.
y/n joined her friends again with a different attitude this time.
she didn't tell a soul what she heard,
it was too embarrassing and she didn't want to admit it, honestly.
soon evening came quicker than she wanted it to,
and she stood by the castle doors getting ready to burst into tears any minute now.
two years and now here he was,
ending it.
she had never really thought about their future together,
but she never really imagined him ending things with her so soon,
especially on her birthday.
"ready?"
the boy smiled brightly,
extending his arm for her to take.
"let's get it over with,"
she sighed,
refusing his arm.
they walked down to hogsmeade in complete silence,
y/n scared to speak in fear she'd begin crying.
she hated it.
they walked into the coffee shop,
y/n feeling as if she was walking into a trap.
they took their seat,
y/n avoiding his gaze.
"did-did i do something?"
"not yet, i'm sure."
"what's wrong?"
he asked.
she turned her head to him,
looking into those eyes that once gazed into her soul with such elegance it made her insides twist.
"cho said you told dean you brought me here to break up with me."
once the words finally processed in his mind,
he let out an awry laugh.
"you're not serious?"
"why are you laughing?"
"because, y/n, that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard! why would i break up with you?"
"i don't know! you tell me!"
she yelled,
cedric yelling back with a smile on his face,
"i couldn't tell you because i don't want to! i don't ever want to!"
she placed her hands to her mouth and began to laugh in shock,
"oh my god, cedric that's so embarrassing."
"why-why would you believe her anyways?"
he asked,
his expression growing a bit serious.
"i don't know. it just sounded so believable."
"do you want to break up?"
"no! no, not at all."
"okay good. i'm sure cho just told you that because she's fancied me for a while now."
"has-does she really?!"
cedric nodded his head to her question and took a sip from his cup,
but y/n could see his faint smile.
"oh my. i'm-i'm mental."
"only a little,"
he admitted and reached for her hand,
laughing as he intertwined their fingers.
"if it makes you feel any better, ernie and i got into a row when we first began dating."
"huh? why?"
"because he was madly in love with you and you chose me."
"yes, actually, that makes me feel loads better,"
y/n giggled and apologized yet again,
but cedric dismissed the issue with the wave of his hand.
"happy birthday my love. here,"
cedric smiled and handed her a wrapped present.
she opened it to find a ring that sparkled in the dimmest of lights,
bringing a brighter smile to y/n's lips.
on the inside of the ring she noticed the letters,
"c.d"
engraved on the inside.
"wow cedric... i love it. you really went all out, huh?"
he chuckled softly and took the ring from her clutch,
sliding onto her finger.
"just wanted you to have a reminder that i'm there with you wherever you go."
he kissed the frontside of her hand,
causing her cheeks to heat up.
"blimey, diggory. you're such a romantic."
"only for you darling,"
he winked and took another sip of his drink,
the love deepening within y/n.
"quit making me fall deeper in love with you, cedric. might mess around and force you to make an unbreakable vow with me so you can't leave,"
y/n laughed,
cedric following her lead.
"i wouldn't mind. cause then that means you can't leave either."
the two sat in the coffee shop for another few hours,
laughing and enjoying each others company.
"we should head back,"
cedric said as he looked at the darkening sky.
"we should."
they rose to their feet,
cedric offering y/n his arm again.
she took it this time and began the walk to the castle,
the pair making jokes and telling silly stories along the way.
"thank you for today, cedric. you're the best."
"i try, my love. anything to keep you smiling."
"you're doing a great job. and i'm sorry for the whole thing... it was stupid of me."
"quit apologizing! it's alright, i promise."
y/n nodded and felt cedric place his thumb on her chin,
lifting her head to kiss him.
the world around her faded out as they became connected.
she felt the butterflies swarm her stomach while they remained together,
before he pulled back.
"i love you."
"i love you more."
cedric kissed her hand again,
telling her happy birthday once more before they set off for their common rooms.
she skipped happily along the way,
biting down on her bottom lip.
she eyed the ring that glistened on her finger,
her heart almost bursting.
dating cedric diggory was the best decision y/n ever made.
