TW: abuse.
—
y/n flinched as the boy raised his hand,
preparing herself for the strike.
"stop!"
she cried out,
covering herself before he could make contact.
"you're pissing me off,"
he spat before lowering his hand.
she looked at the boy before her,
who was once so sweet and loving.
"evan..."
she whispered out,
her heart beating slower now.
his hand connected with her face for what felt like the hundredth time this month,
making her eyes burn with tears.
"go away. i don't wanna look at you right now,"
she quickly gathered herself and left evan to himself,
carefully touching the throbbing area of her cheek.
she turned down a hallway and saw draco malfoy leaning against the wall,
his friends by his side who were laughing at his joke.
"y/n. good to see you,"
the boy grinned before taking notice of her streaked cheeks and the rather irritated spot of skin on her face.
he jumped off the wall to catch up to her,
standing in front of her to stop her from walking any further.
"what draco?"
he placed his thumb and index finger at her chin and turned her head to take a closer look at her now swollen cheek.
"did that prat evan do this?"
"no,"
she lied straight through her teeth,
making him scoff.
"yeah right. like i don't see him yelling at you every chance he gets. and now he's hitting you, yeah?"
"draco please..."
she removed draco's hand from her face and walked past him,
but he was persistent.
"you don't deserve that, y/n."
"he loves me! he-he just has a temper and i make him mad."
"you know as well as i do that's rubbish! i saw him just the other day yelling in your face because you didn't go to breakfast."
"leave it alone! just drop it, would you?!"
she yelled,
letting the tears flow.
"please..."
y/n headed off and left draco standing there,
feeling helpless and angry.
"oi, crabbe, go find evans for me."
***
two days later draco saw y/n speeding down the hallway with a bruise swallowing her cheekbone.
"bloody hell y/n..."
"you just had to get involved, didn't you? getting crabbe to bring him to you so you could 'teach him a lesson' huh?"
"i couldn't let him keep hitting you like this, y/n. it's not right."
"i don't know why you care so much!"
"because you're my friend!"
"draco...i'm asking you, as your friend, to drop it. let me handle it. please,"
she begged.
he sighed and ran a smooth finger down the bruise,
watching her flinch.
"you deserve better."
he spoke at a soft tone,
her eyes closing for a second.
"i know,"
she whispered and walked past him to her class.
draco watched her as she disappeared from his view,
his heart aching for her.
she didn't deserve to endure something so painful.
"she should be with me,"
he admitted aloud.
the boy had been helplessly in love with y/n for years,
ever since they met their first year at hogwarts.
"she should be with me."
***
"are you alright?"
draco whispered to y/n,
taking notice of her dark under eyes.
she looked up and he could see the pain ringing around her once bright eyes.
she forced a smile,
"of course. you?"
"don't lie to me."
she sighed,
and shrugged.
"what can i do?"
"obviously leave him."
"draco...i can't."
"why? that wanker should be lucky to have you around! not knock you around! it's not right, y/n."
she smiled and reached out for his hand,
holding it with shaky hands.
"thank you for caring."
he rolled his eyes,
"whens the last time you've eaten?"
"why-why do you ask?"
"because you're all shaky. you shake when you haven't eaten."
"you remembered?"
"of course i did,"
he spoke with an attitude,
his heart melting at their connected hands.
y/n smiled and felt something in her gut she hadn't felt since being with evans:
butterflies.
"well, have you?"
"no..no not in a while."
"great. you'll eat with me at dinner then."
"draco, evans-"
"he wouldn't lay his hands on you around me. even he's not that stupid."
she took in a deep breath and laid her head against his shoulder,
"you're a great friend, draco."
"yeah whatever."
***
y/n did as promised and sat herself near draco at dinner,
picking away at the food.
draco reached over to grab something for her plate,
and watched as she flinched.
his eyes fell at the sight,
"i'm sorry i'm just jumpy today,"
she laughed and wiped her eyes quickly.
"y/n..."
"don't start."
"don't start? why would i? it's not like i'm watching my best friend get beaten down on everyday. no nothings wrong at all! i won't start!"
y/n's eyes began to brim with tears.
he sighed with regret and reached for her hand under the table,
squeezing it.
"i'm sorry. i just hate seeing you like this."
"you think i don't hate it too? you think i like being hit?"
she mumbled,
her voice cracking.
"well you certainly aren't doing anything about it."
she stood up and threw her napkin on her plate,
"you don't get it!"
she yelled a bit loud,
shocking him.
she ran towards the doors to disappear from everyone,
their bodies becoming blurry as the tears built up.
"she's mad, innit?"
the boy near draco laughed.
he whipped his head around,
"put a sock in it, you tosspot."
draco then began to run after y/n,
seeing her pinned against the wall by the one and only.
"well well well. what's this? still hitting on women, are we evans?"
"draco, leave it!"
y/n tried to warn,
but was secretly begging for the help.
"yeah, whatever. evans, didn't your parents ever teach you it's not nice to hit your girlfriend? oh..that's right. your mother left you behind, yeah?"
evans came storming for draco,
making him chuckle.
"come on. you know as well as i do you're only man enough to hit a girl."
"mind your own, draco."
"keep your hands off her, yeah?"
draco spoke through gritted teeth,
pushing evans back.
evans stumbled and shockingly looked around,
then walking the other way.
"are you alright?"
draco asked and inched towards y/n,
examining her body.
"what the hell was that?!"
"i-i was helping you?"
"i don't need your help, draco!"
"sure seemed like it! you were gonna let him hit you again!"
"i wasn't going to-ugh! just shut up!"
she yelled and sank down the wall,
her hands to her temples in frustration.
draco sat down next to her and leaned his head against the wall,
"im sorry. you're right, i don't get it. i've never had to experience something like that. but you do understand me, right? watching the only girl i've ever learned to love being smacked around like that. you're too good for that. nobody deserves that, especially not you."
y/n turned her head,
draco following her lead.
he gave her a soft smile and caressed her cheek,
"let me love you correctly. whenever you're ready, i want to show you how great you deserve to be treated. you deserve the best, y/n, and i want to give that to you."
she nodded her head slowly,
"when i'm ready?"
"whenever you're ready, i'll be here."
