"so have you been asked yet?"
pansy parkison asked from across y/n,
folding her newly manicured hands on the table.
"hm?"
y/n muttered as she rushed to copy the herbology homework.
"to the yule ball. have you been asked yet?"
"oh, no. did you?"
"mhm,"
pansy spoke with a hint of pride in her tone.
"draco's asked me just this morning."
"oh god. now she's really never going to shut up about him,"
blaise spoke from y/n's side,
earning a quick giggle.
"so, y/n, you going solo too?"
blaise questioned.
the girl shrugged,
"nope."
"so who are you going with?"
"cedric,"
she answered nonchalantly and folded the pieces of parchment up to store them.
"he's planning to ask you, then?"
"dunno. i'm gonna ask him."
pansy gasped in horror and held an offended hand to her chest,
"you...you are going to ask?! but you're the girl!"
"first of all, gross. but yes, that's the point. so what i'm a girl? if i want to get it done, i've got to do it, right?"
blaise snickered from beside y/n.
"think it's funny, do you? well, you'll see. when you're sitting all alone at the table, i'll be out dancing with cedric."
blaise tucked himself away at y/n's retort.
"anyways, if you two are done discussing the ball, i'm going to excuse myself."
she got to her feet and began making her way to the front door,
before feeling a firm hand grip itself around her wrist.
spinning on her feet,
she was now face to face with cedric diggory.
his smile was soft and gentle;
welcoming as always.
his eyes,
still so warm and inviting,
pulled her in.
"hey,"
he greeted.
"hey."
"so-"
"there's something i have to ask you,"
y/n interrupted anxiously.
he chuckled and nodded,
"great. i do too."
"perfect. so we'll ask on three?"
cedric found himself completely humored at y/n,
"yeah, on three,"
he suddenly agreed.
"one,"
they spoke synchronically though the butterflies swarmed in her throat,
nearly blocking the words from leaving.
"two."
her heart was beating all too quickly,
"three."
"would you wanna go to the ball with me?"
"cedric, let's go to the ball together."
the pair stood still as the words processed,
then soon they were pouring over with laughter.
"that's perfect,"
y/n spoke through her laughter,
watching cedric's brown hair shake as he nodded.
"i'm happy to hear we're on the same page, but yours wasn't much of a question, was it?"
he chuckled brightly.
"mm, was more of a request."
"ah, i see. so, we'll be going together?"
y/n nodded,
"pick me up at eight."
***
y/n spent the afternoon rummaging through her trunk,
wondering what accessories to pile on with her dress.
"y/n! y/n!"
pansy clapped her hands enthusiastically while mullicent trailed behind her with a garment bag in hand.
"is that it?! is that the dress?!"
y/n asked excitedly,
bringing her hands to her face in surprise.
"it is!"
y/n zipped it open and gasped as the color immediately brought the room to life.
radiant,
dashing,
regal.
y/n could go on for hours about the dress before her.
"it's so..beautiful,"
pansy whispered from behind y/n's shoulder.
"i'm telling you, parkinson. she's the best seamstress this globe has ever seen."
y/n ran her hands down the smooth fabric of the dress in awe.
"cedric's gonna love you in it."
"not as much as draco's gonna drool over you!"
pansy blushed and tittered lightly.
y/n smiled and zipped the dress back up,
placing it safely on her bed.
"just two more days, guys!"
***
cedric found himself pacing the halls anxiously,
mumbling the words that were soon to leave his mouth soon.
how could you have been so stupid!
he asked himself.
but he knew it was only bound to happen sooner or later.
y/n was much too enthralling to ever let down,
much less ignore.
and being face to face with her the way he had that day,
he had heard the words come out of his mouth before he had time to really even process them.
her humor,
her charm.
cedric had wanted nothing more than to be with y/n.
"hi, cedric,"
cho smiled politely.
cedric smiled back in courtesy.
"hey, cho. can we talk?"
"of course. what's wrong?"
"it's about...the ball."
"oh! is something wrong with the color of my dress? i can arrange to change the color if needed. to, you know, match your tie and all."
cedric swallowed hard and shook his head,
"no, no. your dress is fine, it's cute. but...plans have changed. and i'm going with y/n."
cho's soft expression suddenly melted into one of anger.
"y/n? the slytherin girl?"
"yes, that's the one."
she scoffed,
"you must be under some-some potion. did she do something to you?"
cedric took a step back and furrowed his eyebrows,
"no, i'm fine. y/n's a stunning woman. and i'll be going with her. sorry it ended this way but i'm sure potter would love to take you."
and with that,
cedric turned on his feet to leave a fuming cho behind.
he felt rather lighter now that the burden was lifted.
all that was left now was to prepare for the lovely evening ahead.
***
"you're wearing makeup?"
pansy asked as y/n inched closer to the mirror to perfect her winged eyeliner.
"yes?"
"but aren't you like...a feminist?"
y/n laughed,
"pansy, i know you're like brain dead, but i can still wear makeup."
"hm. interesting...can you do mine then?"
"yes, of course. give me a minute."
