"welcome home!"
y/n's parents exclaimed,
the decorations everywhere surprising her.
"oh my!"
she laughed as hugged her parents tightly for the first time in years.

y/n had been sent abroad to study magic in america rather than attend hogwarts about four years ago.
she wasn't quite sure why,
her mother had decided for her.
and that's how most of her life went.
her mother made the decisions,
and she complied.
it was easier that way.

"so how's Ilvermorny treating you?"
her father asked as they took a seat at the dining table.
"good! really good. i just miss it here."
"nothings happening here! i'm sure america is a lot of fun."
"yeah, it is. the people are interesting,"
she giggled and began to eat the food set out for them.
"mm, y/n, we have guests coming tomorrow. so you might wanna clean up and prepare for that."
"alright,"
she nodded,
getting up to clean off her dinner plate.

y/n sat around for a couple more hours,
talking to them and catching up,
before the sleep hinted at her eyes.
"excuse me. but i think i'm gonna go to sleep now,"
they exchanged their goodnights and y/n trudged up the stairs and into her bedroom where she finally felt at home again,
falling into the mattress she missed so much.
she stretched one last time and closed her eyes,
nodding off into a peaceful sleep.
***
"wake up!"
y/n's mothered smiled over her.
the girl rolled over and looked out the window,
the sun not even awake itself.
"what time is it?"
"5 am, of course! you've got a lot of cleaning to do. so come on, up up!"
"i'm coming,"
she groaned,
stretching the sleep out of her body.
y/n got up and dressed for the day ahead of her,
smoothing out her clothes as she examined her body.
she had lost a fair bit of weight,
she figured being away from home for so long was beginning to take a toll on her.
she didn't like ilvermoney all too much if she was being honest.
it was a great school with great people.
but she didn't feel like she fit in too much.
she'd much rather be at hogwarts with the people she had grown up with.
the stress, loneliness, and longing from home was beginning to catch up with her.
pushing through the feeling,
she hopped down the stairs and began to help her parents around the house.
cleaning,
dusting,
mopping and sweeping.
"here. figured you'd wanna look through it before we rid of it,"
her father smiled and placed a box in front of her,
full of memories from the years prior to her study in america.
"oh my god..."
she mumbled,
pulling out the photographs and photo albums.
"y/n! talk like a lady, would you please?"
her mother sighed.
y/n nodded as she opened the album and set eyes on the boy who was once her best friend.
the pair were inseparable at once.
now she wasn't even sure if he'd recognize her.
she ran her fingers down the smooth plastic that protected the picture in the album,
smiling and reminiscing on the days where she once felt at home.
"mum, have you heard from neville?"
"no, not a thing really. not ever since he left for school."
"oh...right,"
she nodded and continued rifling through the box,
laughing and even feeling the tears rise up at points.
she missed this life more than anything.
"his grandmother is coming over today! didn't i tell you?"
"no, you have told me who's all coming."
"oh. very well. have you unpacked?"
"not entirely."
"well what are you waiting on?"
her mother ushered her back upstairs to her room,
where she began to unpack her clothes.
the smell of the ilvermoney school was still engrained in the cloth,
giving her a bit of a stomachache.

after about an hour or so,
y/n's mother called her down to join the family and her guests.
the girl hurried to fix her hair, and touch up her makeup,
and rid of the wrinkles in her clothes before she headed downstairs.
"oh mrs longbottom it's so lovely to see you!"
y/n greeted and hugged the woman,
smiling large.
"oh y/n, darling! look at how much you've grown!"
augusta smiled as she held y/n by her shoulders and sized her up.
"you've turned into a beautiful young woman, y/n. as i always knew you would. beautiful and quite intelligent, hm?"
the woman winked,
making y/n laugh soft.
"thank you so much."
"of course! you remember my grandson, neville, don't you?"
the boy appeared from around the corner,
his smile shy but excited.
"neville!"
y/n exclaimed and quickly wrapped her arms around the boy,
feeling his tough exterior collide with her own body.
she pulled back and cupped the boy's cheeks with her hands,
"look at you! you look great!"
she spoke with an animated laugh.
"i could say the same about you! it's been...years."
"tell me about it,"
y/n removed her hands from his face and realized how his face had matured into his features,
becoming prominent and making him rather attractive.
"i've missed you neville,"
she spoke through a whisper.
"i've missed you more. how come you never returned for holidays?"
"well,"
she laughed,
"i'm-i'm not sure. my friends invited me to spend holidays with them so i guess i just took the offers."
"didn't wanna come home?"
"i think you get it."
they laughed together like old friends,
feeling as if no time had passed by them.
y/n's mother was still quite 'wretched' (as neville would say)
and things were well.
as the adults talked and drank their wine away in the dining room,
y/n sat with neville on the couch and caught up with him.
"so hows america?"
"much rather would prefer home."
"really? oh! id love america!"
"it's great! don't get me wrong. i just think i'd be much happier at hogwarts. with the people we all knew, you know?"
"oh definitely. hogwarts is pretty nice. i think you'd fit in quite well, y/n. i've made a fair few friends. just have a bit of an problem remembering the common room passwords,"
he laughed and scratched his head,
a bit embarrassed.
y/n laughed and patted his knee softly,
"you've always had a bit of a remembering issue, haven't you?"
"have i really? huh..guess i don't remember."
they laughed together once again,
y/n's stomach beginning to hurt from all the strain.
"you and i should do something tomorrow,"
y/n suggested.
"oh. what-what would you like to do?"
"lets just go on a walk in town, please?"
"of course. would you like me to pick you up then?"
"oh that'd be lovely. say, 10?"
"great."
neville smiled and finally felt like he had his oldest friend back.

y/n examined herself in the mirror and turned from side to side,
realizing her bones were beginning to become a little more noticeable in some places.
and her cheeks were much more sunken in.
she sighed and put on the outfit she loved to wear whenever she got the chance,
and smiled at her look.
she fixed her hair,
touching her face up with some makeup just for good measure,
and slipping her shoes on.
"well you look....uhm may i ask where you're heading off to, y/n?"
her mother asked,
examining her outfit.
