"i haven't even thought about it,"
she admitted to the twins who had just asked her about the yule ball and who she'd be attending with.
"you don't have a date?"
george questioned.
"nope."
"unbelievable,"
the twins said in unison,
their expressions surprised.
"what's the big deal?"
"well you're the hottest girl in our year,"
fred began,
"and the smartest."
george finished.
"so?"
"'so' she says."
"so... you need a date!"
y/n rolled her eyes and focused her attention on the book in front of her,
with the shake of her head.
"i don't think i'll be attending. i've got bigger things to worry about rather than a silly little dance."
"have you gone completely mental?"
george asked.
"not completely,"
she giggled before shoving the books into her bag and adjusting it on her shoulder.
"didn't get this smart by attending school dances, weasleys,"
y/n tapped her index finger to her temple as the words left her mouth,
spinning on her feet to leave.
"you're going looney, y/n!"
"completely bonkers!"
she laughed to herself and rolled her eyes,
turning to catch one last glance at her favorite twin before leaving.
"are you gonna ask her, mate?"
"she said she's not going,"
george shrugged.
"how dim can you be? she's not going because she doesn't have anyone to go with!"
fred explained,
flicking george.
"so i should ask her?"
"you've liked her for years now, right?"
"of course."
"then yes! ask her!"
***
she hummed to herself,
the quill running along the parchment smoothly.
"y/n!"
george spoke suddenly,
making her flinch a little.
"gave me a fright there, george,"
she admitted before turning in her chair to face the boy who stood in the doorway.
"you alright?"
"more than alright. i was wondering if..."
he hesitated,
the words getting caught in his throat.
"yes?"
she egged on,
wondering if this was the moment she had been waiting on for years.
"uhm... i was wondering if.."
she could tell by the way his feet began to move,
it wasn't what she thought it was.
she rose to her feet and nodded her head,
completing his thought.
"i know what you want."
"you do?"
he peeked up,
his smile big.
so much weight was lifted off of his shoulders now that she knew.
"you need me to practice dancing with you for the ball, right?"
he stood there,
in shock.
he scratched the back of his head before shrugging,
"sure. why not?"
***
the week continued with y/n and george meeting in secret to practice his dancing.
"alright. put your hand on my waist,"
she instructed,
her skin cooling at the feeling of his palm cupping her hip perfectly.
"one, two, three,"
she counted,
continuing with the tune.
she began to hum along and soon,
she closed her eyes and lost herself in the music.
george admired her flawless skin,
etched with freckles and softness.
her hair blew in the wind as they moved continuously,
and he began to wonder how someone this beautiful was in his arms right now.
y/n lost herself in the music,
imagining herself at the ball with george.
dancing and giggling with him for everyone to see.
once the music stopped,
down came y/n's fantasy.
and george was forced to stop appreciating her beauty,
for now at least.
"damn, george. you've picked up pretty fast."
"what can i say? i've got a great teacher at hand."
y/n smiled sheepishly as his comment and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"you're too kind."
"only honest, love."
they sat down on the floor,
their backs against the wall and she continued.
"so whos the lucky lady you're taking?"
george racked his mind with names of girls,
but couldn't think of one who came close to comparing with y/n.
"oh you know... just some girl."
"well yeah, but who is she?"
"feeling a bit nosey today, aren't we?"
"avoiding my question, huh? you can't avoid me forever, weasley. i might show up at the ball just to make sure you're using our dancing practices,"
she winked,
earning a laugh from him.
a twinge of sadness poked at her heart as she thought about another girl having george's hands guide her along the dance floor.
"well, i'll save you a dance if you come."
she looked up at him and smiled,
nodding her head.
"sounds good."
***
the night of the ball came all too quickly.
y/n still hadn't decided if she wanted to go or not.
"oh, y/n you have to go! the dress is so lovely. you'll look dashing"
hermione spoke,
her hands running down the dress in awe.
"you look beautiful, hermione. krum's a lucky guy,"
y/n smiled over at the girl,
looking at the dress that laid on the end of her bed.
"y/n!"
the name called out,
angelia stepping in the room with excitement dripping from her lips.
"george has no date!"
"huh?"
"george! he never had a date! his plan was to ask you!"
y/n rose from her seat in the bed and shook her head.
"that's... impossible?"
"it's true! he's sitting all alone now!"
now,
y/n had no choice but to go.
"help me get ready?"
she asked,
a shy smile on her face.
the girls began to work at her hair, makeup, and dress.
and she was finally ready to attend.
"wow..."
hermione and angelia spoke together.
"well let's go!"
y/n squealed,
leaving the room.
they arrived near the great hall,
and y/n urged for hermione to go.
"go! krum's waiting on you. i'll be down in a second."
y/n watched as the crowd turned their heads to watch hermione travel down the stairs,
she truly was a sight to see.
she closed her eyes and took in multiple deep breaths,
trying to build up the courage to go down there and find george.
after a couple more minutes of arguing with herself internally,
she pranced down the stairs.
and just like hermione,
everyone stopped to stare.
she heard a couple of positive whispers,
making her smile.
"bloody hell.... she's even more beautiful,"
george whispered to his twin,
rising from his seat.
he managed through the crowd at the bottom of the steps,
waiting for her.
"you made it,"
he mumbled,
taking her hand to help her down.
"i heard your date cancelled,"
she giggled,
taking a hold of his hand.
"you know, don't you?"
"that i do."
he groaned in embarrassment before leading her to the dance floor,
positioning themselves for a dance.
"i'm sorry."
"no need."
"i'm glad you're here."
"i am too. you freshen up real nice,"
she complimented him,
taking in the scent of his new cologne.
"i could say the same. you look... stunning y/n. truly. more than usual."
she laid her head to rest on his shoulder,
swaying along the dance floor.
"well aren't they just lovely?"
fred mumbled from the side,
nudging ron.
everyone gathered to watch the pair glide,
understanding each other's body perfectly.
"a match made in heaven,"
george heard someone whisper,
a smile creeping at his lips.
they were right.
y/n was the one for him.
"everyone's staring, love. i think they're all plotting to snatch you away from me."
y/n giggled against his chest,
making his heart flutter.
"no need to worry, georgie. i'm yours for the night."
***
y/n giggled a little too loudly as they roamed the dark corridors way after hours,
their excitement from the night still not dying down.
they made it outside the castle and onto the grass,
where he sang a song and danced with y/n.
she laughed loosely and danced with the boy all too jokingly,
the moon lighting their way.
"i could spend forever here with you,"
y/n admitted as he twirled her,
watching her face glow.
"you and me both, darling."
"do you love me?"
she questioned,
stopping their dancing.
george nodded his head quickly,
eager to answer the question.
"more than you'll ever know."
"truly?"
"have i ever lied?"
"you're smooth, weasley. but not smooth enough!"
she laugh loudly and began a more complex dance with him,
one he couldn't keep up with.
"oi! what are you two doing out here!"
filch yelled,
sending them into a panic.
"well don't just stand there, y/l! run!"
y/n took a hold of george's hand as they began to dart away,
trying to find somewhere to hide.
"here,"
george whispered,
their bodies close and hidden out of sight.
"comfy are we?"
george whispered,
chuckling as he took notice of her hands wrapped around the back of his neck.
"very,"
she smiled and felt his forehead pressed against hers.
"do you love me?"
this time,
he asked.
and although it was a loaded question,
she didn't hesitate to answer.
"loads."
he grinned at her answer and nodded his head proudly.
y/n raked her hands through his hair,
pulling him closer to her.
excitement fueled their kiss while his hands explored her body.
it was a jarring feeling,
she tilted her neck to give the boy more access to her,
leaving marks along her collarbone that claimed her.
"george,"
she murmured out softly,
making the hair on his body stand up.
hearing his name escape past her lips like that was euphoric.
"everything alright, lovely?"
he questioned,
pulling back to examine her now swollen lips and neck.
"thank you for tonight."
"no need to thank me! i'm the lucky one out of the lot, eh?"
y/n giggled and slapped his chest ever so lightly,
"should we head back now?"
"i reckon."
y/n slid her heels off and interlocked her fingers with george's,
swinging their hands as they walked to the common room.
"i don't want this night to end,"
y/n admitted as her forehead laid against the boys again,
her hands tracing his jawline softly.
he kissed the palm of her hand before speaking,
"we've got the rest of our lives, my love. it's not the end, only the beginning."
"promise me we'll have fun from here on out?"
"do you know who you're talking to, sweets? fun is my middle name."
"alright my handsome boy. get some rest."
"i will. you too. i love you."
"i love you more."
and with that,
the night ended.
but there began their relationship.
