her head fell forward onto the desk,
her eyes closed and into a world anew.
the class around her drowned out from the sounds of her dreams,
before the boy poked her.
"wake up!"
y/n sat up quickly,
fred smiling at her.
"didn't sleep much last night, eh?"
"no. was up studying."
"studying, huh? atta girl."
he winked playfully,
earning an eye roll from y/n.
"come off it, weasley."
"what? can't be proud of a fellow gryffindor?"
"no but you can leave me alone,"
she smiled sarcastically,
making his smile grow.
"you're a tricky girl."
"you're weird."
"maybe, maybe not,"
the boy shrugged with a laugh to his sentence,
making y/n grow annoyed.
she was never quite sure why she disliked fred weasley so much.
his twin was tolerable,
somehow,
but fred irked y/n like no other.
but through all her sarcastic and rude remarks towards him,
he smiled and laughed through it.
sometimes he even flirted with her.
and it bothered her for whatever reason.
she never really cared to work out the reasoning behind it,
but he made sure to stay in her way.
once their class ended,
y/n was the first out to walk to study hall.
"well look who it is,"
fred smiled,
walking in front of y/n with his back turned to the rest of the crowd.
"you're in my way."
"precisely."
"so... move."
"oh y/n, where are your manners?"
he laughed loudly before tripping over a first year,
and falling to the ground.
she let a loose laugh out and shrugged,
leaving him by himself.
she took her seat and began to work on the homework that was due soon.
a few seats down sat fred and his twin,
their snickers echoing.
fred, sending a note in the shape of a bird,
flew it's way to y/n and landed right in the middle of her book.
"do you want to go to the ball with me? ;)
-fred w"
she looked up at him,
that goofy smile on his face and his signature wink.
"no ♡"
she sent back,
watching his face fall.
the boy looked back up,
determined,
and laughed.
"you're gonna go with me."
he wrote back,
y/n replying with:
"no i'm not."
he sent it back,
his laugh louder this time,
"watch."
"no."
she finished,
leaving the hall to find refuge in her dorm where no one could be of bother.
she sunk into the bed and looked at the ceiling,
trying to figure out why she envied fred so much.
maybe it was because,
through everything that was thrown his way,
he still managed to smile and laugh.
nothing bothered him,
and y/n was the exact opposite.
she sighed and shook her head,
realizing her jealousy was going to be the death of her.
***
she ate in the great hall alongside her friends,
not feeling up for much conversation today.
"you're awfully quiet today."
"yeah, y/n what's wrong?"
harry and ron asked.
"i'm exhausted."
"tell me about it,"
hermione exclaimed,
going to rant about her overload of work.
on the other side of her,
angelina and katie gossiped about the ball and who theyre attending with,
leaving y/n with no interest to either conversations.
"well look who it is,"
the squeaky voice cackled,
catching y/n's attention.
she looked up to see pansy parkinson and her group of friends,
"go away."
"what's the matter, y/n? still haven't seen your brother, have you? whats your pathetic father up to these days, besides being jobless? and i assume your mother is still working at a bar? ha! your whole family is a shame to the wizarding world."
y/n looked up and watched the girls gather in a fit of laughter,
y/n quickly rose to her seat and grabbed a fistful of the girls hair,
pulling her close from across the table.
"i said go away."
"l/n! what is going on!"
professor mcgonagall asked worriedly.
y/n let go of the girls hair and pushed her back,
sitting back down in her seat.
"twenty points from gryffindor! you are out of order, mrs l/n!"
"she was provoked!"
hermione defended,
rising to her feet.
but it was no use.
the whole dining hall had heard and seen y/n's outburst,
which embarrassed her.
"are you alright?"
harry asked,
y/n nodding her head in reply.
"i think i'm gonna head in early. ill see you guys."
and with that,
she left her friends behind,
rushing to get as far away as she could with tears pricking her eyes.
you are an embarrassment.
y/n collapsed to the ground,
the grass around her cooling her skin.
the tree in which she sat under shaded her from the moons light,
the trunk being her support.
she tried to stop the tears,
but they kept coming.
everyone knew about the l/n family,
her brother being an accused death eater,
her father working at the ministry of magic and failing to do his job miserably which resulted in his resigning,
and her mother making do with her job in diagon alley.
"y/n? are you alright down there?"
y/n couldn't see his face,
but the tall, skinny figure inched her way.
even in the darkest of nights,
she could see the bright orange hair walking her way.
"god, weasley! when are you ever gonna leave me alone?"
she exasperated,
rising to her feet.
"i-i wasn't coming out here to find you. you just happened to be here."
"why are you out here then?"
"i always come to sit by this tree when i can't sleep. very peaceful."
she fell back to the ground and sighed,
fred joining her.
"i'm sorry. i thought you were coming to get me."
"no, not at all. i understand. you need your space, and ill give you that. so, i'll be on the other side of this tree,"
he nodded,
walking to the other side.
y/n leaned her head back against the bark,
closing her eyes.
"if it makes you feel any better though, pansy's a tosspot."
y/n cracked a smile at the words,
hearing his chuckle.
"she embarrassed me, fred."
"cause she's a coward. she has nothing else on you specifically besides your family. and you are just a byproduct of your family, that's all. we're not all the same as our parents or siblings. if we were, pansy would be smart and... attractive. i mean have you seen her mother, let's be honest!"
y/n let out a well needed laugh,
inviting fred to come sit closer to her.
and he did,
telling jokes and stupid stories.
it was a great distraction and it made y/n feel loads better.
"i'm sorry i've always been such a bitch to you, fred. i guess i've always just been jealous."
"jealous?! of what?"
"you're so.. positive all the time. and no one can say anything to get you down. you're always smiling and making someone laugh, and i just wish i had that quality."
"y/n, loads of people make fun of me daily. and just like you, they bring up my family. but i don't let it bother me. can't give them that satisfaction."
"your family is so sweet though. from what ron tells me."
"my family is sweet. and i'm never ashamed of them, or where i come from. and people are going to try to make you feel embarrassed about being different. but it's up to you to let that affect you or not."
"so wise beyond your years, weasley."
"what can i say? i am a genius."
together they laughed and y/n leaned her head on his shoulder,
"i bet you think i'm a joke, huh? being a l/n."
"not at all. i think you're different from your family. you're smart, you make such high marks, you're friendly (at times), you care about everyone, you're patient, kindhearted, understanding, and not to mention beautiful."
y/n felt the corners of her lips turn at the comment,
her cheeks heating.
"wow. you'd think we'd been friends for years with the way you're talking."
"just because you and i have never been close doesn't mean i don't hear about you. ron talks so highly of you, all of your friends do actually. ron actually told me about the time you and millicent fought first year because she was messing with hermione."
"not my proudest moment. but, yes."
"and that's what separates you from your family. you're courageous, not afraid to admit you made a mistake, you're so loving to the people around you."
"fred, you're making me feel even worse for being a bitch to you."
"no need to. it was fun messing with you all the time."
y/n snickered along with the boy,
her hands wrapping around his arm.
"have you found a date for the ball, yet?"
she asked
"not yet. why?"
"would you still like to take me?"
"don't be dim, y/n. of course i want to go with you."
***
the night of the ball was a success.
y/n and fred had a grand time together,
everyone around them stopping to stare.
but oddly enough,
she didn't care.
their opinions didn't matter anymore.
everyone was whispering good things anyway,
saying how cute they were together and they were bound to be "hogwarts couple of the month."
soon the ball came to an end and they lingered in the common room alone,
still dancing.
y/n was high off adrenaline,
and he was feeding off her energy.
there was no telling when their night would come to a stop.
"i can truly say you've never looked so regal, y/n. you look amazing."
"you're too kind, freddie."
"only honest,"
he winked,
spinning her around.
he pulled her into his chest,
the moment growing quiet.
fred stopped and stared at her,
absorbing her beauty.
"are you gonna kiss me or not, fred?"
she whispered,
her heart slamming against her rib cage.
he chuckled and placed a thumb to her chin,
coming in to kiss her.
their lips moved magically together,
fitting in like a missing puzzle piece.
***
y/n woke up the next morning in her bed with the ball gown still on,
katie giggling at her side.
"long night?"
"mhm,"
y/n answered quickly.
she reached to her nightstand,
feeling the crumbled piece of paper beneath her finger tips.
she curiously opened it,
letting out a laugh as she read the note that was passed between fred and y/n in study hall.
and at the bottom,
read:
"i told you. thank you for a great night. you're a smart and beautiful girl, y/n. never forget that.
also, you're a great kisser. let's do that again sometime ;)
-the boy you declined and yet still attended with,
fred weasley."
y/n held the note close to her chest,
closing her eyes in disbelief.
this felt like a fairytale.
but as she trotted down the stairs to attend breakfast,
she laid eyes on the boy with glowing eyes and fiery hair,
telling her this was all real.
"good morning!"
"good morning, weasley."
"get my note?"
he winked,
grabbing her hand and intertwining their fingers.
"yes i did. it was beautifully written, thank you."
they laughed but soon his expression fell,
his face was content.
and y/n couldn't quite read him.
"you feeling okay?"
"more than okay. just.. admiring you is all."
she laughed sheepishly and shook her head before he continued,
"but no i'm serious. kiss me or i might go mad."
"go mad? and here i was thinking you were already completely out of your mind,"
she laughed,
fred mocking her laugh playfully before drawing her in and planting a romantic kiss on her lips.
he pulled back,
his thumb running across her bottom lip slowly.
"would i be out of my mind to call you my girlfriend?"
"i don't think so. do you think it's be dim of me to call you my boyfriend?"
"not at all. in fact, i think you'd be the smartest girl ever to call me that. go ahead say it again,"
he grinned,
holding his hand to his ear.
"my boyfriend."
"oh! yes! victory, at last!"
he celebrated,
y/n erupting into a loud laugh.
"i'm gonna make you the happiest girl ever, y/n l/n. just you wait."
