"it doesn't really matter."
y/n shrugged as she laid comfortably on harry's bed.
"yes it does."
"think about it. you go underwater, you pass out, they drag you back out. you don't really think dumbledore is going to let you, his poster boy, drown?"
harry could feel the frustration in his bones beginning to settle.
it was growing so intense these days,
it hurt to even move.
the simple slip of his tongue and suddenly he'd sent a wave of curses over someone.
without ron,
y/n was really all he had left.
aside from hermione's quiet company in the library.
"just..either help me figure it out, or get out."
y/n got up from her spot and sat on the edge of his bed,
her smile still lingering against her lips despite his harsh tone.
"okay, all you had to do was ask."
the two put their heads together to try and come up with a way to keep him safe during his second task,
but in the end,
they came up empty.
harry groaned and threw his glasses down onto the desk,
rubbing his eyes of the frustration that pricked his knuckles.
y/n sighed and pressed her lips together,
as serious as harry had ever seen her.
"hey...you know we'll find a way. we always do."
"it's in twelve hours, y/n!"
he yelled,
but she continued with her soft, easy tone,
"i know. but that's more than enough time to find something. it'll be okay."
her optimism in a time where nothing was going right was beginning to anger him.
she placed her hand on his shoulder for support,
but he quickly shrugged it off.
"it won't be okay!"
"harry-"
"shut up!"
he was on his feet now,
letting the weeks of built up anger finally set itself loose.
obscenities were thrown,
especially towards y/n,
with rage burning through him.
all y/n could do was stare,
debating on comforting the boy or tossing her own curses at him.
she decided and soon got to her feet to look over at him,
noticing he was red with exhaustion,
then kept her tone even when she spoke,
"okay, harry."
and with that,
she left him in peace and found comfort in her own dorm blankets.

harry stood behind and shrugged as nonchalantly as possible,
slamming the door behind her.
i don't need her.
i can figure this out on my own.
he thought rather proudly,
though he knew it was only wishful thinking.
without y/n,
he'd lost his only chance at winning this tournament.
and even worse,
possibly harmed their friendship.
he felt a strange sense of panic gnaw at him at the thought of losing y/n.
but the ire was stronger than whatever sense of regret he was feeling now.
he laid to sleep with panic weighing his already heavy mind.
not only was he lacking the supplies for his task tomorrow,
but he lost his biggest supporter.
***
harry woke up with a stinging pain in the middle of his forehead.
his first thought was his scar was beginning to act up again,
but it was only when he opened his eyes that he realized it was a result of y/n's flick.
she hovered over him,
her face set with seriousness and eyes drained of the humor she usually worse.
this mundane y/n before him made his heart wring,
even if he was excited to see her again.
"here. eat it before you go in."
she handed him the slimy, green plant and stood up straight,
wiping her palm free of the residue on her jeans.
harry began to speak,
but y/n walked out before he could mutter a word.
was it possible to feel this much gratitude yet regret at the same time?
though his biggest issue had been solved,
thanks to y/n,
the burden weighting itself on his chest was no lighter than it was before.
so he trudged down to the water where he'd spend the better half of his day fighting for survival,
and hoped y/n was there in the stands.

y/n sat in the very back of the stands,
hidden by the standing bodies of her hogwarts peers,
and listened to updates through the scattered gossip.
she couldn't explain why she'd come out here only to listen.
if she relied this much on the gossip,
she could have waited in the common room where it was warm and the weather didn't threaten to numb her hands entirely.
but yet here she sat,
nearly frozen to the stands in worry of harry's safety.
even after his meltdown that was spent cursing her.
time seemed to slow the longer they remained underwater.
y/n was sure it'd last forever,
until he finally broke the surface,
gasping for air and pushing forward two bodies instead of the one.
y/n couldn't help but grin at him.
she let out a breath of air she didn't know she'd been holding,
and rolled her eyes playfully.
he was crowned second for morale fiber,
leaving y/n to stay shadowed in the stands and giggle.
"poster boy."
and as she left the stands to return to the warmth of the castle,
harry saw a glimpse of her beauty from afar and felt relief wash over him.
he smiled larger than he'd been smiling before and finally found the strength to celebrate.
***
harry mumbled inaudible words as he paced back and forth in front of y/n's door,
nearly wearing out the floor beneath his feet.
y/n opened the door and met with harry,
though her face was not etched with surprise.
"you've been out here pacing for forty minutes."
"i've been trying to think of how to apologize."
"...well?"
harry stepped forward and took his hands into y/n's,
finding himself a little surprised of how timid she grew.
"i'm terribly sorry, y/n. it wasn't fair of me to take my stress out on you. you're amazing, and i'd be so lost without you. i don't want to go another day without you by my side, y/n."
y/n let out a little laugh.
"it's only been two days."
"the worst two days of my life,"
he admitted with a sigh.
y/n's once stern look melted into the usual animation harry was so accustomed to seeing.
relief fell over him at the sight of her bright smile.
harry found himself admiring every inch of y/n in this moment.
every freckle that kissed her face,
every line that was worn from her smiling,
every stray hair that fell to her eyes,
her eyelashes that perfectly complimented her with each blink.
harry,
after years of being friends with the girl,
was just coming to terms with her beauty.
it was astonishing to him,
how he could have gone so long being oblivious to such a ravishing girl?
"hey."
y/n snapped in front of harry's eyes,
bringing him back to the reality around him.
though there was no greater sight than the girl who stood before him.
he could feel his heart beating a little differently now with this new revelation in mind.
with each new pulse came an echo of her name that lingered in the depths of his veins.
"w-what?"
he finally spoke with a hoarse voice,
letting his eyes wander over the beauty that was y/n.
"you're odd."
harry laughed the nerves away from his body and shrugged.
"what's new?"
"i missed you,"
y/n said with a smile and opened her arms for a hug,
but harry found himself placing his lips to hers.
the contact was short,
but exhilarating enough to shock every fiber of harry's being.
y/n stumbled back and with wide eyes,
tried to examine him for an answer.
harry felt his stomach tighten into a knot,
and fear claw at his insides.
"i'm-i'm so sorry."
"what was that?"
he could only shrug.
what were the right words to tell his oldest friend of the love he harbored for ages now?
"is this some winning champion thing?"
"w-what? no. i just..."
harry sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"i like you, y/n."
y/n's lips twitched into a little smile,
leaving harry to follow her actions.
the girl stepped forward,
closer to harry,
and let the tips of her fingers trail down his smooth, wind kissed cheeks.
he blushed beneath her touch,
but found the strength surging through his body again.
"i promise, from here on out, i'll never allow another curse to slip past my lips and hurt you."
"promise?"
she mused with a playful smile.
harry laughed softly at her and nodded.
"i promise."
their lips came together as one,
sealing their promise for the future,
and beginning the sweetest relationship that was ever known to walk the halls of hogwarts.
