fred's eyes scanned the room full of people in hopes of finding her here.
after all,
this party had been thrown as a lame attempt to see her again.
but fred knew, no matter how hard he tried to keep it a secret, the parties always pointed back to him and george being the hosts.
and if y/n caught wave of this information,
she was sure to make herself scarce.
but lo and behold,
here she was.
y/n stepped into the common room looking as elegant as ever,
and fred nearly felt his heart give out on him.
losing her had been life's cruelest joke played on him.
y/n had been very adamant about being left alone ever since they ended things with one another,
but fred couldn't stop himself from sneaking quick looks at her throughout the day.
he had become completely hooked on the girl,
and found it hard to turn a blind eye to her.
"oh, look! your girlfriend showed up,"
harry teased with a shoulder pat to fred.
"ha, ha. you're quite funny, harry, really. you should consider a career in comedy if you ever find time away from being the chosen one."
harry and fred laughed together as one before they parted ways,
leaving fred to become the center of entertainment.
y/n watched him from afar,
not sure if she wanted to hate him or adore him in his moment.
she always loved the way he drew a crowd in,
and was able to make them laugh until their stomachs hurt.
but she surely wasn't allowed to feel this way anymore,
especially since she was the one who forced him to stay away with a string of threats.
yet,
she laughed at his joke just loud enough for him to catch wind of it.
his heart fluttered deep within his chest,
and he gave her a small smile in return.
y/n's stomach erupted into butterflies.
the same butterflies she hadn't felt in years.
feeling this new sense was odd,
and she wasn't sure she enjoyed it.
so she swallowed the burning liquid in her cup and allowed the nerves within her to disappear.
the more she allowed herself to drink,
the more she'd feel normal.
right?y/n, to put it simply, was no longer feeling normal.
the world was spinning beneath her and she wasn't sure if the laughter around her was truly that loud,
or her senses had heightened.
but what she did know,
was that she was entirely past drunk.
faces around her were becoming blurred,
and she was beginning to grow nauseous.
she fell down onto the couch and looked around for a familiar face,
only to find a hurrying group of kids with no distinction to their structure for a drunk y/n to see.
until she laid eyes on fred weasley.
there was nothing blurry about him.
in fact,
she had never seen him so clearly before.
she stumbled to her feet then began to walk his way.
but before she could reach him,
a slytherin boy she couldn't quite name stepped in front of her.
"you look amazing tonight, y/n."
"mhm. thanks."
the boy grabbed a hold of her wrist and began to lead the drunk girl out of the common room,
but she tried to wriggle out of his grip.
"what's the matter? you didn't come to-"
"no, please let me go."
the boy quickly let her wrist go and scattered away,
making her hurry to fred.
her hand clapped against his shoulder,
making him quick to turn around.
when he saw her,
drunk and incoherent,
he couldn't decide whether to laugh or hurry her out of there.
"i think you've had one too many,"
he chuckled and helped her to stand upright.
she nodded with a pained look,
"please get me out of here. you're the only one i can actually see."
despite her confusing sentence,
fred heard enough to wrap a careful arm around her waist and guide her towards the exit.
she stumbled around but fred was able to keep her steady until they found comfort in the bench outside.
she sighed and sat against it,
letting the humid air kiss her delicate skin.
"thank you, freddie."
she smiled,
making fred laugh soft.
"don't mention it."
y/n laid her head to his shoulder and kept her eyes closed,
where she faintly swayed due to the constant spinning.
"you always overdo it, don't you?"
"it sneaks up on me."
she giggled.
fred relished in the echo of it and felt completely at ease.
he had missed every inch of her,
and it was becoming impossible to ignore.
only he'd have to.
not only was he not about to hit on a vulnerable, drunk y/n,
but y/n had been perfectly clear about being apart.
yet,
he couldn't stop the chills from rising when she wrapped her arms around his and traced small figures eights to his bicep.
"oh, freddie, i miss us."
"bloody hell, you're drunk."
"that...is also true."
she smiled against his arm then laid a quick, but lingering, kiss to his arm.
"you know i almost got kidnapped by some slytherin boy? not quite sure who it was...but it was rather embarrassing."
"you didn't know who he was?"
y/n shook her head,
"no. i can only see you."
"what-what does that mean?"
she looked up at him with low, red eyes that he couldn't help but grin upon.
"everyone's face is blurry. but yours isn't. i can only see you."
"oh, y/n, how embarrassed you're going to be tomorrow."
the two of them shared the laughter within for another moment or so,
before she sat up to face him completely.
"i never understood why you did it. i was...i was good to you, right?"
"you were. you've always been so good, y/n."
"then why...why didn't we work out?"
fred draped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her close to his chest,
letting his lips linger to the top of her head.
"i wish i knew."
her sigh was heavy and full of hurt,
"guess the world will turn either way.."
"doesn't mean we have to accept it, y/n. remember when you told me we're in control of our own fate?"
"yeah, i do."
"so, let's take control."
***
fred and y/n woke up the next morning with throbbing heads and racing hearts.
their solid bodies pressed against one another was enough to make y/n dizzy.
she hadn't planned on spending the rest of her night with fred,
but if she was being completely honest,
she didn't regret it in the slightest.
they had done what fred said,
and took control of their own fate.
so here they laid,
together as one,
with beating hearts of content.
