anyone who is anyone knows neville longbottom.
but more specifically,
the clumsiness that follows him.
the boy did what he could to avoid the bumps, bruises, and the ache that seemed to be a part of him.
yet,
he always found his way back in the hospital and coming out with scars.
luck never played in his favor.

neville hung his head low while being rushed to the hospital with madam hooch attached to him,
holding his a broken arm to prevent further breakage.
but it didn't make the humiliation any less horrifying.
kids pointed and laughed at him as he passed,
and though he felt like he should be used to it by now,
it never got any easier.
neville could feel his cheeks burning as he took another step,
and it didn't end until he found refuge in the hospital bed of hogwarts,
closed in by the curtains.
tears pooled in his eyes for a split second.
not only from the piercing pain in his arm,
but also from the embarrassment he was forced to face almost everyday.
the laughter echoed in his head,
and it nearly sent a string of sobs past his lips until he took in a deep breath with closed eyes.
the air cleansed his lungs and rid of the burn,
allowing him to clear his shaking body.
when the curtain popped open to reveal a girl,
he flinched and felt the color drain from his face.
"oh! i'm sorry! i didn't mean to scare you."
"it's-it's fine."
the girl nodded and looked at the chart in her hand,
giving neville the perfect opportunity to admire freely.
he could tell by her stature that they remained in the same year,
and she had to have been the most beautiful, too.
with hair that moved with the faint wind of the hospital,
and eyes that were beaming,
the color of them sent a wave of awe over neville.
when she looked back at him with a smile,
he felt a small chill run down his spine.
it wasn't fake,
or mocking like the smiles he had grown accustomed to.
it was genuine and beautiful.
"madam pomfrey will be with you soon. i-i only help around keeping things in order. not really allowed to  handle the important stuff."
"but you have a clipboard..."
neville murmured out.
y/n looked at it then giggled so lightly,
he would've missed it had he not been entirely drawn into her.
"it's just for decoration, if i'm honest. are you okay, though? you're a bit peaky."
he lifted his arm high enough to draw her attention to it,
"well, my arm is broken."
"oh! yes, of course. give me a second,"
she hurried to speak before disappearing on the other end of the curtain,
leaving neville nothing but the sweet scent of her aroma.
he was astounded by her mere presence,
and yet was somehow even more enticed by the way her smooth voice calmed every raving nerve within him.
but he turned his head away from where her shadow remained behind the curtain.
a girl like y/n wouldn't bother to look his way on any normal day.
he doubted she would have even come behind the curtain if she knew he was the one who remained in the bed.
yet he couldn't help but to feel hopeful that maybe,
just maybe,
she felt that little spark within her too.
her hand slid through the opening of the curtain where she sent a small wave,
"i'm coming in."
then she entered completely.
neville couldn't help but smile a little.
but his smile only grew once she took a seat at the end of his bed.
"madam pomfrey's coming. thought i'd keep you company while you wait."
"oh...t-thank you."
the red hue across his cheeks deepened.
but this was different.
it was unlike the other times where the flush appeared because of the mocking of his peers.
this feels good,
he thought while feeling the butterflies swarmed his ribcage.
"so, nev, can i call you nev?"
"yeah."
"great! nev, i'm y/n."
"y/n...i like that,"
he whispered,
watching as her teeth sank into her bottom lip carefully.
"thank you. how's your arm?"
"feels...broken,"
he answered.
y/n laughed a quiet, but genuine, laugh that neville couldn't help but return.
"i'll be back, okay?"
she smiled at him so charmingly,
then laid a supportive hand on his shin.
before he could answer,
she disappeared and left him with madam pomfrey.
when the woman finished with her work,
she gave neville what seemed to be a sad smile.
neville was used to this look.
he got it from every adult who pitied him.
but it didn't matter now.
y/n said she'd be back.
and though he barely knew her name,
he knew she'd be back like she said she would.
so when he laid back into the pillow to wait,
he tried to fight the weight in his eyelids.
just to see her.
y/n soon came from around the curtain slowly with a soft, gentle smile that neville liked to assume was reserved for him.
"get some rest."
"n-no. i'm not tired."
"your eyelids are halfway closed, love."
she laughed,
taking her seat on the edge of his bed.
if neville was being honest,
he was scared to fall asleep in fear that when he woke again,
y/n would be gone.
and just as though she read his mind,
she gave his shin another light tap.
"i'll be here when you wake up, okay?"
he nodded and allowed his eyes to close,
sending him under.

when neville's eyelids fluttered open again,
he assumed he had slept for about a week.
otherwise the tightness in his limbs was purely from the fall that broke his arm.
he stretched away both the sleep and the soreness,
then saw y/n appear into view.
his heart hammered inside his chest,
and only increased when she smiled at him.
"you're up! feeling okay?"
"yeah, alright."
"good to hear. so, i heard that you got a remembrall from your...aunt was it?"
"m-my nan."
and as y/n asked about it,
he sat up quickly to look around for it.
with his one, free hand,
he checked his pockets and came up empty.
"i lost it!"
y/n beamed as she dug inside her bag,
just to pull out his remembrall.
"oh, you have it!"
"i do. though, i think harry is the one you should thank."
neville laughed and sat back against the pillow,
twirling the ball in his hand.
"so, nev, you're good to go whenever you'd like."
"right...thank you."
"say..meet me in the common room later on, okay?"

later throughout the night,
you could find neville and y/n huddled together and laughing as though no wrong in the world existed.
and while they found comfort in one another,
a friendship also blossomed between them.

"it's kind of trivial. but, i can't help to feel like this,"
y/n admitted as she walked alongside neville,
her head hung low.
"feel like you won't succeed?"
"mhm. i mean...what if i fail out of healing school?"
"you won't, y/n."
neville nudged her shoulder to replace the frown across her lips with a smile.
and though he was successful,
her smile was sad.
"think about it, y/n. who else was there to fix me when those cornish pixies nearly tore my ears off?"
y/n giggled,
and her smile remained soft while they took a seat on the grass.
"you're right. that was when madam pomfrey finally started letting me handle the potions."
"exactly! and you finally had a use for that clipboard."
the two of them erupted into small, quiet laughs before y/n laid herself back to stare at the sky.
neville followed her lead,
and was taken by surprise when y/n laid her head to his chest.
her eyes traced the stars that dotted the sky,
and they began pointing out the twinkling constellations.
y/n soon sighed deeply,
"i love the night sky. when it's all bright like this. it's so...beautiful and full of life."
neville looked down at the girl on his chest and let the smile play at his lips.
"yeah...just like you."
through all the dark nights in his life,
y/n had been there to shine through and help.
she had been his godsend.
he let his hand fall to the small of her back to hold her lovingly,
and y/n smiled brightly.
"you think so?"
"never been so sure of anything in my life."
neville couldn't believe y/n was doubting her potential.
he had never known a girl to be so determined,
and kindhearted all in one.
she had supported him,
lifted him up,
and loved him when no one else would.
and here they laid as one in their sixth year,
letting their guts bubble up with love.
but this love was different than the one they had grown so accustomed to.
what was once innocent, platonic love was now fading into that of pure bliss,
the kind of love that gives you a reason to stay awake because reality has finally become better than your dreams,
love that fuels your existence.
"i love you, nev."
"i love you too."
y/n shook her head and repositioned herself to face him closely,
"no..i love you."
the smile that danced across neville's lips had been so stunning to y/n,
she nearly let out a gasp.
"and i love you,"
he returned.
neville let his hand fall to the nap of her neck,
where he held her with care.
their lips soon found their way to one another,
and it had been a sweet kiss full of devotion.
neville was quick to realize he'd break a million bones if it meant keeping y/n around,
but he was fortunate enough to have her by his side solely because she wanted to be there.
and that in itself was enough to send a wave of ecstasy through him.
her presence was intoxicating enough,
but having her lips against his own was dizzying.
and he wouldn't have it any other way.
when she pulled back to admire him in this new light,
his eyes glistened with hope and made y/n excited for her future.
for once in her life,
she was ready for the next day instead of shying away from it.
and neville had never felt so lucky.
