"tell me it's not true.."
y/n muttered,
her eyes threatening to spill over with tears as she stared down at george.
"y/n.."
"george. did you or did you not cheat on me with katie bell?"
the silence overcame them,
george knew the answer but seeing y/n this upset made his stomach twists in so many knots,
he felt as if he opened his mouth again he'd throw up.
but she took the silence as an answer and stormed out the room,
george calling for her.
he knew he had messed up,
not explaining and letting her think he was a cheater.
"y/n! please! come back!"
she turned on her feet,
angrily walking back to him.
"you're-you're a cheater and i want nothing to do with you! i've wasted enough time on you, leave me alone!"
she spat acidly,
the words making his heart sink.
"y/n..."
"no! leave me alone!"
and with that,
she left him behind with the tears rolling down her cheeks.
she felt bad.
i shouldn't have been so harsh.
he cheated on you, y/n.
yeah but... i was rude.
the constant battle in her mind was becoming overwhelming,
her head throbbing with pain.
"what's wrong?"
luna asked as she looked up from her shoes,
titling her head.
"weasleys a filthy cheater!"
luna wrapped an arm around y/n and let her cry,
offering a bit of unusual advice here and there.
but y/n appreciated every bit of it.
luna was a great friend.
y/n sat up and wiped the tears off her cheeks with her sleeve,
smiling with luna.
"your eyes are pretty after you cry."
"thank you luna,"
y/n smiled and looked down at their feet.
"and thank you for listening."
"not a problem. i was just here reading daddy's new issue of the quibbler. he's talking about wackspurts these days."
"wackspurts?"
"mhm."
"mind telling me about them?"
luna and y/n sat together,
discussing about the creatures luna was so interested in.
it was fun,
and provided a great distraction for y/n.
but soon they were off to bed and y/n laid restlessly,
wondering how george could've done this to her.
after so many years of being friends and being in love meant nothing to him.
she closed her eyes,
remembering one of their happiest moments together.
valentine's day their fifth year.
george had made her a card that would sing a quick tune every time she opened it,
the pop-out cupid shooting an arrow in the sky.
"happy valentine's day my love!
another one with you,
and i wouldn't want it anyway.
hope you like the card i made.
ginny helped.
i love you, sunshine.
can't wait to see you today.
-g.w (aka the best boyfriend ever)"
she remembered it so vividly,
her body going warm as she recalled the smell of his cologne sinking into her lungs as they hugged in the corridors,
soon making way to hogsmeade for their date.
the laughed too loudly and played silly games in the cafe,
but y/n enjoyed it nonetheless.
the girl felt her lips twitch into a smile,
but once she opened her eyes it all came crashing down.
george wasn't like that anymore.
he would now take katie to the cafe and laugh too loudly with her.
he would take her through the secret passageways of the school.
he would dance with her.
he would be happy with her.
katie can give george what i couldnt.
she thought bitterly,
eyes stinging with tears that begged to spill over.
she closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep,
where nothing or no one could hurt her anymore.
***
y/n walked into the great hall and sat across from her friends,
barely touching her food.
her recent breakup had caused her to lose her appetite.
"you need to eat, y/n."
hermione whispered before luna skipped to their table,
taking a seat.
"it's no good not to eat, y/n. george being a cheater isn't your fault. you should eat,"
luna spoke,
pushing the plate towards y/n.
everyone at the table looked at y/n in shock,
their faces dropping.
"george cheated?"
harry asked.
"thats-thats impossible!"
hermione exclaimed.
"that weasel,"
ron spoke with a snarled lip.
"it's really not that big of a deal, guys."
"not that big of a deal?! that tosspot took up years of your life! brought you around for holidays, took you on trips with us, met your family, all of it! and he cheated?! oh i'll-"
"ron, please. it's painful enough having to think about it. the last thing i need is for you all to keep bringing it up. just drop it, please?"
everyone nodded their heads in agreement,
but she was sure to thank them for caring about her.
they soon shuffled off to class,
where y/n exchanged seats to sit with seamus instead of george.
the boy hurried into class to talk to y/n,
only to find dean thomas in her seat.
"what're you sitting here for, you git? it's y/n's seat."
"not anymore. she's back there with seamus. said she'd pay me to switch."
george looked towards the back of the class and saw y/n snickering with the boy beside her.
"oh.."
"everything alright between you two?"
george looked over at the boy,
"does it look alright, dean?"
y/n felt the nerves rise in her stomach as george continued to look back at her throughout class,
but she ignored it and took notes or whispered to seamus about something.
once class ended,
george rushed to catch up with y/n in the hall.
"really? paying kids to switch seats with you now, huh?"
"you seem more upset about me moving than you cheating on me."
"y/n i didn't chea-"
"save it, weasley. i don't care."
"would you let me explain?"
"there's nothing to explain! i caught you with katie, and now we're broken up. you wasted my time, you ruined us! stay the hell away from me."
she pushed him out of the way and found her way to the next class with teary eyes.
george stood still,
watching her run away from him.
the girl who once rushed into his arms,
once hurried to find him,
once found serenity and comfort in him,
was now gone.
and there was nothing he could do.
he just wished she'd listen long enough to see the truth.
george would have never cheated on y/n.
he was the perfect girl for him.
he sighed and sulked on to class,
racking his mind with ways to show her.
***
it had been a month since george and y/n broke up.
and george had still not found a way to let her know.
he tried notes.
but she ripped them up and threw them away.
he tried to corner her,
but she always managed to slip away.
he tried to get friends to tell her,
but as soon as the words "george" left their mouth,
she'd walk away.
it had been a month,
and it was no easier for y/n.
he was consistently trying to talk to her,
but she couldn't bare to hear it.
she didn't want to know the details about katie and the boy who was once her first love.
she'd sit in class and let her mind wander back to the days when george and her would stay up for hours,
planning their future.
or when they took a holiday trip to egypt.
it had been some of the best years of her life,
apart from the times they'd argue over silly things.
but even then he held her close and reminded her that through it all,
she was the one.
and that he loved her more than anything.
"liar,"
she mumbled beneath her breath as she flipped the page over,
looking up at her professor.
"may i speak to miss l/n, please?"
professor mcgonagall asked,
standing at the doorway.
"of course,"
professor flitwick permitted.
y/n rose to her feet and followed mcgonagall to her office,
where dumbledore and fudge stood.
"what's going on?"
y/n asked cautiously.
"oh dear..."
mcgonagall quivered.
"y/n, your uncle has been found dead,"
dumbledore spoke,
the sympathetic faces of the adults peering at her.
she felt her legs tremble as the words processed.
the man she'd grown up with,
her father figure,
was gone forever.
"no!"
she wailed out,
collapsing to the floor in agony.
it couldn't be true.
mcgonagall crouched down and held her in her arms.
her ears began to ring as she sobbed profusely.
the only family she had now was gone.
all she could think about was george,
and having him as comfort.
he knew her uncle quite well.
they'd share the grief as one.
he knew how to hold her right.
she finally rose to her trembling feet and wiped her eyes.
"come, y/n. take a seat,"
dumbledore offered.
she walked over and sat,
listening to dumbledore explain the tragic death of her uncle.
on the other side of the door,
stood george.
he waited patiently at the bottom of the gargoyle that trailed to dumbledore's office,
waiting for y/n to return.
he had wondered whether she was in trouble or not.
he was worried for her.
but as the hours ticked by,
she still hadnt returned.
he figured if it was anything,
he'd be the last person she'd tell anyways.
the worry in his stomach piled with each step he took toward the great hall for dinner.
he ate bits and pieces,
but soon trailed up to the dorm before everyone else would.
he wanted peace and quiet.
but as he walked in he saw y/n,
her eyes puffy with tears.
"george!"
she cried out,
flinging her arms around him.
her body shook with sobs,
his arms wrapping around her slowly and holding her tight.
"it's alright,"
he whispered,
hearing her hiccup.
"breathe,"
he spoke as soft as ever,
y/n then attempting to take in deep breaths.
he sat her shaky body down on his bed and wiped the stray tears off her cheek,
asking her what happened.
"he-he's dead,"
and she leaned her head into his lap crying some more.
he felt his own heart drop at the words,
with her state george knew she meant her uncle.
he ran his fingers through her hair and tried to console her.
"i can't do this without you,"
she admitted through her cries.
"you don't have to, y/n. i'm here."
she seemed to have begun crying harder at the words.
"y/n, can i tell you something?"
she nodded her head.
"i didn't cheat on you. i would never even dream of it.."
he began to explain the situation and how awful it looked,
but what had truly happened.
y/n,
hearing the sincerity in his voice,
looked up at him.
she caressed his cheek and realized he had lost a bit of weight,
and barely slept these days.
"oh george... i'm so sorry!"
"no! no, don't. it was stupid of me to be alone with katie anyways. i don't blame you."
she wrapped her arms around his neck,
and continued crying with a throbbing head.
his arms placed themselves around her waist,
and laid their bodies down.
she apologized continuously about ignoring him,
and then started to blame herself for her uncles death.
"there was nothing you could've done, y/n. you're a thousand miles away."
"maybe if i-if i had written to him more he would've told me he was in danger!"
"love..."
he trailed off,
his voice gentle and smooth.
his fingers traced shapes onto her back,
a favorite thing of theirs to do.
"he would've told you if he knew. stop blaming yourself."
she sighed heavily and got comfortable on his chest,
her heavy eyes soon closing for the time being.
he kissed the top of her head and took notice of her heavy breathing,
realizing she was asleep.
"yeah i know that's what i said!"
the boys yelled as they toppled into the room,
"shut up!"
george yelled in a whisper,
their eyes falling to the girl on his chest.
"sorry mate."
"yeah sorry bout that."
she shuffled in her sleep some as george tried to cover their bodies under the blanket.
with a heavy heart but a strange sense of relief,
george, too, fell asleep.
***
he woke up the next morning,
y/n's eyes wide awake but full of sorrow.
her eyes blinked slowly as she stared into the sky past the window,
remembering the days when her and her uncle laughed together.
realizing they were all just memories now.
"you sleep alright?"
george asked.
"mhm. you?"
"yeah."
he started to stroke her hair again,
always his go to because he knew it soothed her.
"we should get to class soon, huh?"
george shifted a little and pulled her in closer,
"what do you say you and i take a break from class today?"
he suggested.
"i don't want you missing class for me."
"who says it was for you? i just don't want to go,"
he joked,
making her giggle.
"you're a fool."
"so i've been told."
he kissed her head once again before she spoke,
"alright. we can skip."
soon the two were up,
getting ready for their day ahead.
although y/n was trudging through and felt the tears prickling her eyes occasionally,
george was there to help her.
they snuck out of the castle and down to hogsmeade,
where they took a seat in the three broomsticks.
george sat across from her and grabbed her hand,
holding it to his lips while he looked into her eyes.
"you look quite beautiful today."
"you're lying,"
she smiled shyly,
rolling her eyes.
"me? a liar? never!"
"i suppose."
"i love you, y/n. from now until my beating heart stops."
"that might be a long time from now, georgie."
"i know."
she smiled softly.
"you'll go with me to his funeral, won't you? he would've wanted you there."
"of course, love. i'll be there."
he smiled down at her.
they were soon outside walking the streets,
their connected hands swinging in the air.
her laugh rang throughout the town,
brightening everyone who listened to it despite her pain within.
"you are the love of my life, george weasley."
"that i am,"
he winked,
pressing her back against a bare wall swiftly and connecting their lips.
missing her touch,
he kissed a little deeper this time.
their bodies became intertwined in an attempt to become closer together,
making up for lost time.
he pulled back slowly and hesitantly,
his breathing ragged.
"my sunshine."
