y/n leaned against the windowsill,
closing her eyes at the wind whipped around her and whistled in her ears.
the cold air kissed her skin and left her cheeks numb,
but she relished in the feeling of the fresh air finding refuge in her lungs.
"hey! you're y/n l/n!"
the voice called from below,
directing her attention from the night sky to the ground below her.
there stood a red haired boy she had only had the pleasure of meeting once or twice,
and both times his pranks ended with her in the hospital with madam pomfrey.
"which weasley twin are you?"
"fred!"
he answered with a smile,
climbing the tree that rooted up from y/n's lawn and found himself comfortable on her roof.
"well it's nice to see you again."
"likewise. you live here?"
she sat herself on the windowsill and snickered,
"no,"
she answered sarcastically,
making him lower his head in laughter.
"surprised we've never seen each other around,"
y/n smiled.
"i know. how interesting."
"very. now, why are you on my roof?"
"what? i can't have a friendly conversation with a classmate?"
"none of our conversations have been friendly, have they?"
"oh,"
he dragged out,
grins playing on both of their faces,
"this about the bombtastic bombs and boxing telescope, isn't it?"
"very much is! i spent three days with madam pomfrey just to lessen the swelling in my eye! i thought that black eye would last forever,"
she giggled with the roll of her eyes.
"well you healed up pretty nicely."
"think so?"
"oh definitely. look as ravishing as ever,"
he smiled over at her,
making her laugh sheepishly.
"well, no thanks to you."
"hey! i sent you two chocolate frogs during both of your stays."
y/n folded her hands across her lap in surprise,
"that was you?"
"the one and only,"
he winked and looked away from her,
lifting his head to look at the stars.
"well thank you."
"the least i could do."
"so...what brings you here?"
"i don't know. just walking around and happened to see you."
"mhm,"
she shrugged with a small grin to her lips,
"you're stalking me aren't you, weasley?"
he finally looked back to her and gasped with mock surprise,
"how'd you find out?"
the pair fell into a fit of giggles,
that soon stretched out to a long conversation about the life around them.
"it's getting late fred,"
y/n spoke softly with a shiver.
"yeah you're right,"
he agreed and got to his feet,
brushing the dirt from his pants.
"maybe we'll see each other soon."
"well, you know where i live,"
she smiled as they exchanged their goodbyes.
y/n closed her window and watched dreamily as fred walked his way back home.
she let out a breath she had been absentmindedly holding,
really absorbing the conversation the two had shared.
it was nice to talk to someone like that,
it was refreshing.
***
days passed and y/n would walk past her window,
giving a quick look outside just in case.
but just like yesterday and the days before,
nothing.
she was surprised to feel the disappointment rising in her chest,
but she quickly dismissed it.
she opened her window,
and again,
let the night air stick against her skin and nip at her.
it was growing colder by the hour.
"back at it again, are you?"
the familiar voice asked from below,
making her rise with excitement.
she couldn't help but to smile as he climbed the tree and took his rightful seat on her roof.
"hey there."
"miss me?"
"oh so so much,"
she responded with the sarcasm piling out of her mouth,
although there was some truth to it.
"yeah yeah,"
he laughed with her and rubbed his eyes that looked deprived of sleep.
"your roof is nice. you can see the sky perfectly."
"i know. it's amazing,"
she agreed with the nod of her head.
the two of them continued to discuss topics and laugh together like old friends,
tightening their once acquaintanceship.
***
fred made it a habit to come and sit on y/n's roof for at least an hour,
sometimes even longer,
and the pair would talk nonstop.
the conversation continued to flow with no hesitation or awkwardness,
making fred like her all the more.

today marked two weeks since fred's first day on her rooftop,
and y/n waited patiently against her windowsill like she had done for days.
"i'm here,"
fred announced as he climbed,
sitting down and bringing his knees to his chest.
"hey...are you alright?"
she asked,
noticing his pale and sunken face.
he turned to look at her and smiled as best he could,
and nodded his head.
"yeah. yeah, i'm fine."
"hey, what's wrong?"
fred couldn't help but admire her,
especially in such a vulnerable moment as this.
where the tone of her voice was coated in worry,
"it's just uh-family, you know?"
he shrugged and began to mess with the spare branch on her roof in a nervous habit.
y/n encouraged him to continue,
until he melted at the way her voice was so warm and inviting.
fred began to tell y/n about how his older brother, percy, had up and left his home with such hostility and anger towards his family that it began to take a toll on his parents.
the frustration his parents felt soon leaked into his own mood and made him feel terrible.
home was becoming stressful.
"so she doesn't even realize you're gone half the time?"
"no.. but-"
"but she doesn't mean to, i get it...come stay with me tonight. you-you can sleep on the extra mattress we keep and i'll put it right next to my bed. you know, in case you have nightmares i'll be there,"
she giggled along with him,
soon inviting him in.
he stared around at her room and admired the posters and decorations she used to perfect the demonstration of her personality.
"and your parents aren't gonna mind?"
fred asked,
leaning closer into a picture on her wall of her and her hogwarts friends.
"no, they're out on vacation."
"why didn't you go?"
"didn't want to,"
she shrugged and laid against her bed,
leaving fred to continue examining her room.
y/n went to retrieve his spare bed and placed it close to her bed,
then handed him a blanket and some pillows.
"goodnight fred,"
y/n yawned and turned the light off,
the only light coming from the moon outside.
"goodnight y/n."
y/n buzzed with excitement,
feeling fred's presence at her side.
she wasn't sure why she was so happy to have him here,
but she was glad he took her offer to seek some peace away from home.
anything to help.
she thought and closed her eyes to sleep.
she could hear a small sniffle from fred and leaned over the bed,
setting eyes on the glistening tear stained cheek of his.
fred had talked enough,
she decided,
and reached out for his hand.
fred let out a soft chuckle took it a bit hesitantly,
but soon felt everything come to bay as her soft and delicate hand caressed his.
y/n knew how to work and calm fred without him having to ever tell her.
almost as if it was instinct.
his heart began to swell with compassion as he laid it against his chest,
closing his burning eyes to sleep peacefully for the first time in days.
***
y/n eyes fluttered open slowly,
turning her head instantly to see fred fast asleep with her hand still intact.
she smiled and carefully slipped it out of his embrace,
making her way to the bathroom where she laid out spare toiletries for fred.
"good morning! i went to get groceries for the week, i'll be back soon. there's stuff in the restroom for you, towels in the closet, and feel free to use anything around the house freddie. see you soon<3
-y/n xx"
she placed it to her bedpost,
where fred would wake up and see it instantly,
and made her way to the store.

a while after y/n left,
fred woke up and grabbed the note,
smiling softly at the words.
y/n cared for him in such a loving way it made his chest burn with nerves.
he traced his name in y/n's writing with his thumb,
and took her up on her offer.
***
y/n and fred sat on the couch in the living room,
eyes set and glued to the tv in front of them.
the girl let out a soft giggle,
making fred turn his attention to her.
he had known of y/n for years,
but never really got to know her.
until he was presented with the most ample opportunity.
fred admired everything about y/n.
head to toe.
"hey, y/n?"
she turned her head to him,
the small but still so beautiful smile spread across her lips,
"yeah?"
"thank you. for everything. really, thank you."
"of course."
fred smiled and reached his hand out for hers,
lacing their fingers together.
