she sat on the train all by herself,
eyes focused on the trees that so quickly passed her.
y/n took in a deep breath and tried to steady her racing heart,
hoping no one would bat an eye at her once she got off at the school.
she didn't want to be the new girl.
she just wanted a fresh start with no hassle.
she turned her head at the sound of a odd noise,
landing sight on a toad.
"oh. well,"
she smiled softly and picked it up carefully before someone stepped on it,
"aren't you adorable?"
she whispered,
eyeing the animal.
soon a boy peeked his head in,
worry overtaking his face.
"have you seen a toad? it's ab- oh! you have him!"
the boy exclaimed happily,
reaching his arm out for the toad.
y/n placed it in his hands and smiled up at him,
"he was just by the door. i didn't want him getting stepped on, i'm sorry."
"oh no! d-dont worry! thank you for saving him. been looking for him for hours."
"well, look no more. he's there,"
she laughed shyly before turning her attention back to the outside world.
"i'm-i'm neville, by the way. you must be the new girl everyone's raving about?"
he smiled just as shyly.
she turned her head quickly and sighed,
"everyone's talking about me already?"
"oh! no don't worry,"
he calmed,
sitting in the seat across from her.
"it's all good things. everyone thinks you're pretty."
she blushed at the comment and shook her head,
"well thank you."
"i never got your name."
"y/n. y/n l/n."
"well it's good to meet you, y/n."
he smiled and rose to his feet to leave,
before she reached out,
"can you stay here with me? i'm-i'm really nervous and you're the only person who's bothered to talk to me."
he turned on his feet,
shocked at the request.
"yeah, of course."
she smiled and watched him close the compartment door,
before sitting himself down.
the two carried a free conversation,
going from one topic to the other.
she laughed a great deal in the company of neville and enjoyed having him around.
"you're a great friend."
she watched his cheeks wash into a shade of pink.
"thank you. you-you are too."
she smiled back at him and watched their shy tendencies overcome their conversation before he spoke up,
"we're almost there."
her heart leaped into her throat,
the nerves piling.
"don't be nervous! it's a good school. once you get past the moving staircases, peeves, and professor snape, it'll be fun."
"is he a bad teacher?"
he went oddly quiet at the question,
making y/n sense a little fear in him,
so she let it go.
"this might sound weird, but can you stay by my side? just for the first few days? i'm really worried."
he smiled brightly and nodded his head,
"yeah! i'd love to."
***
he toured her around the castle with special permission from the professor,
y/n mesmerized with the magic of the place.
"it's... wonderful!"
"it is. did you attend muggle school before this?"
"oh yes. i was studying algebra, chemistry all the good stuff,"
she giggled sarcastically,
his eyebrows scrunching.
"algebra, huh?"
"yep."
"do you miss that world?"
the question made her think back to home,
the ache taking over her heart.
"uhm... i definitely miss my family."
"i understand. what do your parents do?"
she felt a certain surge of embarrassment at the question,
neville taking notice of her shy behavior now.
"i-i didn't mean to be nosey. i was just.. making conversation,"
he explained,
a reassuring smile playing at his lips.
"oh! no, no you're fine. it's just uh... i never really knew my mother. and-and my father well.. he's a drunk,"
she admitted with the shrug of her shoulders.
neville felt his stomach flip,
feeling sorrow for the girl.
"but you miss your father?"
"he's a good man when he's not drunk. which isn't very often, but when he's sober i make the best of it. he's funny. but ever since my mother left he just... hasn't been the same."
he nodded his head as she told her story,
his heart tugging with each passing word.
"he sounds like an amazing father, although he's got some flaws. but don't we all?"
he smiled at her,
watching her smile back.
"you're right. he'd love you! he's very into plants and such as well."
"well, i'll be sure to keep an eye out for him,"
he joked,
listening to her giggle.
"can you promise not to tell anyone? it's not that i don't trust you it's just... embarrassing."
"your secrets safe with me, y/n."
"thank you,"
she smiled back,
a hint of worry in her eyes.
neville pressed his lips together,
before walking into the common room.
"well i guess this is goodnight, neville."
"guess so. goodnight y/n. i'll meet you in here tomorrow and we'll walk to breakfast together."
"can't wait."
***
and just as promised,
he sat in the common room chair and waited for the girl to come down.
"who are you waiting on, neville?"
ron asked,
eyeing his nervous behavior.
"y/n."
"the new girl?"
"yeah."
"huh... shes a view, isn't she?"
"yeah. she's pretty."
"id love to be her friend! you'll introduce me, won't you, neville?"
hermione asked excitedly.
"yeah. yeah, i'll do that."
"you fancy her already, don't you neville?"
hermione asked with squinted eyes,
smiling.
"i mean, like ron said she's a view."
neville defended calmly.
"yeah, 'mione. any guy who doesn't already fancy her is obviously blind."
y/n came down the stairs shortly after ron finished his sentence,
the room growing quiet.
"good morning, y/n. sleep well?"
neville asked,
rising to his feet with a smile.
she realized the eyes in the room seeping into her before she nodded her head,
"quite well, thank you. what about you?"
she asked,
slipping past a girl with bushy hair, red haired boy, and a slightly familiar black haired boy.
"me too. these-these are my friends hermione, ron, and harry."
"nice to meet you all,"
she smiled sweetly,
partaking in a small conversation with hermione about their classes today.
"well, let's get to breakfast shall we?"
the girl stuck to nevilles side as they walked down to the dining hall,
the three people walking in front of them.
"they're a good group of friends."
neville turned his head and nodded,
"yeah. they're the golden trio of hogwarts."
y/n giggled,
making neville smile as they took their seats to eat.
everyone in the group began to ask her questions about her life before attending hogwarts,
her hobbies,
her likes and dislikes.
"are your parents muggles? mine are. they're dentists,"
hermione smiled and waited for her answer.
y/n froze at the question,
she hadn't thought of a story to tell about her parents yet.
she didn't have a lie to tell.
her mother could've been a witch,
but she never knew.
"oh.. uh, my parents.. they-"
"they're biologists aren't they, y/n? you were telling me about that on the train,"
neville interfered.
"yes! yes, biologists. both of them."
"huh. how cool!"
y/n shot a look of gratitude toward neville,
watching him wink back.
***
they were now in charms class,
y/n and neville being the only two tucked away in a corner.
"don't be embarrassed about this morning, y/n. everyone's just curious about lineage,"
he explained,
the eruption of laughter from the other side of the class.
"yeah, you're right."
"you can imagine the worry i feel when people ask about my parents too."
"you've never told me about your parents neville,"
y/n spoke softly,
flicking her wand to silence the toad in front of her.
"they're in st mungos hospital for magical maladies and injuries."
"are-are they okay?"
the cheerfulness in his face lessened,
y/n feeling a twinge of guilt.
"you don't have to tell me, neville."
"no it's okay. you told me, i should tell you."
she pursed her lips together and reached for his hand under the table,
squeezing it supportively.
the sparkle in his eyes ignited for the first time in a while,
encouraging him to move forward with the story.
by the end of it,
y/n was shocked.
she had learned about the dark lord, the familiar black haired boy, and the fate of nevilles parents all in one class.
"oh neville. that's terrible. i'm so sorry."
"it's alright. i visit them on holiday. and-and it's fun. it's good to see them, you know?"
"yeah. i bet! they sound like such lovely people."
"i think my mom would've liked you when she was.. you know. you remind me a lot of her."
y/n blushed at the comment and felt her heart swarm with emotions.
"you're a good man, neville. you're gonna make them proud."
his smile brightened.
he soon leaned in to whisper to her,
"and you're gonna prove your mom wrong."
***
months passed and y/n was starting to grow rather popular around the castle,
but she still preferred nevilles company over anyone's.
"you were right. professor snape is horrid!"
he nodded his head in agreement,
"i mean two rolls of parchment? due tomorrow? really?!"
neville chuckled at her sudden outburst,
taking a liking to her furrowed eyebrows and angry expression.
"you're really pretty,"
neville suddenly admitted,
feeling his cheeks turn a few shades darker.
she stopped her rant and smiled gleefully,
"thank you, longbottom. you're pretty handsome yourself."
the two continued their homework,
finishing a little while after one am.
"hey, this weekends a hogsmeade weekend, right?"
y/n asked before parting their ways to the dorm.
"yes."
"can-can you give me a tour? i've never been and i would love to see it."
"yeah. yeah, of course."
***
soon the weekend came,
and y/n was set off to the town with neville by her side.
she mumbled a few "heys" to the people that walked past them,
neville shoving his hands in his pockets.
"you're pretty famous now, huh?"
y/n shook her head modestly and laughed,
"not even. they're all just excited about the new girl."
"you're hardly new now, y/n. it's been well over three months."
"i suppose."
"we go on holiday next week. you returning home?"
"don't think so. my dads not one for the holidays."
"would you like for me to stay here with you?"
"oh god, neville no! go home and enjoy christmas with your grandmother. you deserve it after another year with snape."
"she won't mind. really, y/n, i'll stay."
they walked into honeydukes and snagged a booth,
y/n shaking her head.
"i can't ask you to do that for me."
"well, it's a good thing you're not asking. so i'll stay,"
neville decided.
y/n smiled shyly and lowered her head,
"can't wait."
they sat and went through a couple glasses of butterbeer,
neville catching her up on the most famous wizard sport,
quidditch.
"so you like the sport then?"
y/n asked jokingly,
"like it? i love it!"
***
christmas was here before they knew it,
and y/n had loved the personal time she had spent with neville.
there was hardly anyone in the common room these days,
besides the golden trio and a few others.
they spent hours playing in the snow,
indulging in snowball fights,
building snowmen,
and even making paper snowflakes.
y/n giggled as she presented a purple colored snowflake to neville,
the sparkles moving in the light.
"it's beautiful."
"yeah? you think so?"
"definitely."
"why thank you, kind sir."
"not a problem, malady."
the clock struck twelve and y/n jumped to her feet,
"happy christmas, neville."
"happy christmas, y/n."
she reached into her bag and pulled out a relatively small gift,
handing it to him.
he took it hesitantly and smiled,
"you shouldn't have."
"of course i did!"
he tore the wrapping paper off and felt the surprise wash over his body.
"bloody hell, y/n! how did you get this?! it must've cost a fortune!"
he exclaimed,
waving two tickets to the next quidditch game in his hand.
"it was worth it,"
she giggled at the excitement on his face,
loving every second of it.
"well i guess it's only right i give this to you then?"
he asked and pulled out a gift himself.
it was heavy and thick,
and was revealed with a quick tug at the wrapping paper.
"neville!"
she laughed loudly,
setting eyes on the chemistry textbook.
"how did you even get this?"
"open it,"
he hinted.
and so she did,
and in between the pages laid a beautiful bracelet,
encrusted with jewels that gleamed proudly.
"neville..."
she gasped breathlessly,
"it's amazing! it's so beautiful, thank you!"
she picked it up and caught eye of an engraving on the inside,
"prove them wrong."
it read,
making her heart flutter.
she looked up at him with teary eyes,
pulling him into her arms.
they stood in each other's embrace for a while longer,
feelings of gratitude and love pulsating through their veins.
they pulled back and y/n took his hands in hers,
watching the mistletoe spring out above them.
he felt his cheeks darken,
and her nerves heighten.
y/n wanted to do it,
more than anything,
and so did he.
and almost as if they read each other's mind,
they guided their way to each other's lips.
his hand held her cheek softly and caressed her with the pad of his thumb,
both of their stomachs tightening in joy.
they pulled back slowly,
smiles bright and soft.
the music that traveled through the air encouraged a dance in neville.
he extended his hand to her,
"may i have this dance?"
he asked with a bow.
y/n giggled and curtseyed,
"of course,"
taking his hand and swaying in the room to the tune.
he was a natural,
to y/n's surprise.
she laid her head on his shoulder while their bodies moved to every inch of the room,
his hums soft and lovely.
"y/n, could you give me one more christmas gift?"
"i can most certainly try. what is it?"
"would you be my girlfriend?"
she looked up and smiled all too brightly,
nodding her head quickly.
"of course, neville."
their lips met again,
the sweetness and innocence still the same.
the pair stayed in the common room for half the night,
dancing and laughing gleefully.
after their feet grew tired,
they sat on the common room couch,
y/n's head laying in his lap.
he raked his fingers through her hair,
their tired eyes focused on the fire.
"i think this is the best christmas i've ever had,"
y/n admitted,
neville bending to kiss her cheek,
"me too, love."
she closed her eyes and before she knew it,
she drifted off to sleep.
neville watched her for a minute,
admiring how peaceful she looked.
he stroked her cheek carefully and leaned his head back,
falling asleep himself.
