"can you promise me something?"
y/n asked,
holding her luggage in one hand.
"of course! anything,"
neville agreed with the nod of his head.
the girl slipped a small piece of paper into his hand,
looking up at him with a smile that made him weak at the knees.
"promise you'll write me?"
he felt his cheeks turn a shade of pink,
accepting the paper.
"promise."

a few weeks had passed since summer holiday had begun,
and y/n still hadn't received a letter.
until today.
she sat in her room,
zoning the world around her out as the book she was reading suddenly became more interesting.
she heard a familiar sound at the window,
the owl perching itself with a letter intact.
she jumped to her feet almost instantly,
taking the letter.
"oh thank you!"
she smiled and sat on the bed,
quickly opening it.
"to my dearest y/n,
i hope summer is treating you well.
sorry for the late owl,
got distracted with everything at home.
not that i haven't been thinking about you!
i have!
not in a weird way or anything.
anyways,
i miss staying up late with you and eating chocolate frogs till we were sick.
home is boring without my best friend.
hope this letter finds you well!
also,
i read up on the wolfsbane herb.
thought you'd be interested to know that if you mix it with honey and glass,
it keeps the werewolves away.
hope you're well.
-your best mate,
neville longbottom"
almost immediately,
she rushed to her stationary and began writing.
"to neville, my bestest friend,
thank you for the info on wolfsbane! i'll be sure to keep that in mind in case i need to ward off any werewolves. you keep me smart, longbottom. where would i be without you?
i've been thinking about you as well,
not in a weird way either.
just miss having your help through herbology.
(thank you, by the way! got an O on my o.w.l!)
as for the chocolate frogs,
i'll be sure to bring enough money to splurge on them!
can't wait to see you again.
stay safe!
-y/n l/n xx"

as the weeks went on,
several letters were sent and delivered between the two best friends.
it was something y/n looked forward to.
as well as neville.
there was only two weeks left until first term started,
and y/n received an owl from neville.
but this one was different.
"dear y/n,
with classes starting up again soon,
i figured now was as good as any time to tell you this.
don't be alarmed,
but i had to tell you before we meet again and i chickened out.
i am,
and always have been,
madly in love with you.
i could go on for hours explaining why i am,
but that'd be too long of a letter.
you complete me, y/n.
make me a like better man.
please say you'll have me as your boyfriend?
hoping this letter finds you well.
-the boy crazy in love with you,
-neville longbottom."
y/n was at a loss for words.
at the bottom of the letter was a flower.
her favorite kind of flower.
her heart poured with love at the gesture.
but she was scared.
she didn't want to risk it and lose neville forever.
he was her only true friend.
emotions coursed through her body,
one after the next.
she knew she should write back,
but she couldn't find the words.
part of her wanted to leap at the opportunity,
he was perfect for her!
but she was worried.
what if they didnt last?
what if it was too awkward?
her mind was puzzled and confused,
each day passing with no letter back.
soon,
the day came to be boarded on the hogwarts express.
y/n said her farewells and got on the train,
hoping to avoid neville.
all she needed was a couple more days to think.
although she had quite a few.
she sighed heavily before hearing a knock,
she looked up and met the eyes of the one and only.
"hey.."
he breathed,
sensing the tension in her shoulders.
"hey."
"you doing okay?"
"yeah, i'm alright. you?"
"doing well, thanks."
"yeah.."
the conversation died,
awkwardness clouding their conversation.
"look about the letter i sent-"
"can i have more time? to think?"
he laughed and shifted his weight onto his other foot,
raising an eyebrow.
"you-you had weeks to think, y/n. i'm not rushing you in any way but give me something, please?"
she swallowed the lump in her throat,
noticing the worry that glossed over in his eyes.
she loved his eyes.
even in his most troubling times they looked at her with such softness,
it made her feel safe and warm inside.
"y/n?"
he called,
bringing her attention back to the situation in front of her.
"sit down, please?"
he trudged in and slid the door closed behind him,
taking a seat across from her.
"i'm scared. i'm scared that if we're together,
i'll ruin this beautiful friendship we have. and i can't lose you, neville. i can't."
"you won't. and i believe you and i will last. you can't deny the connection we have, y/n. you feel it as well as i do, i know you do."
her heart began to beat outside her chest,
butterflies overwhelmingly filling her stomach.
he was right.
he leaned in and let the smile pull at his lips,
his thumb resting on her chin.
"neville.."
she whispered,
making the hairs throughout his body stand.
this was different side to each of them,
but the exhilaration rushed through their bodies and became connected at the lips.
her hands laid against his chest,
feeling his lips pour out the pent up love.
once they pulled back,
his smiled was brighter,
and his heart was full.
"still need more time?"
she laughed and rolled her eyes,
reaching out for his hands.
"no, i don't. i'd be more than happy to be your girlfriend."
neville then yelled,
happy for his success,
and kissed her hands repeatedly to show his gratuity.
"i'm gonna make you the happiest girl ever, y/n. i promise."
"can you still be my tutor or are certain things gonna get in the way?"
she played around with a small giggle to her sentence,
their lips coming together again.
"i think we'll work something out,"
he winked and kissed her forehead,
leaning back to pull out a chocolate frog out of his pocket.
"neville!"
she exclaimed,
the thought slipping her mind.
but the boy was full of small gestures that made y/n bubble over glee.
she was right where she belonged.
