"if you're wanting to pass my class, mr malfoy, you're going to need extra help,"
professor sprout recommended with a certain sympathy hung in her eyes.
draco scoffed at the sight and rolled his eyes.
i don't need your pity or your stupid extra help.
this class is useless.
ridiculous.
these bloody plants won't help me much when i'm chosen.
he thought bitterly,
though you could see his anger in the set of his pursed lips.
"i suggest going to see miss l/n. she tutors students like yourself after class in the library."
draco turned on his heels and fumed out of the class with fists at his sides.
his fingernails continued to dig into his skin,
piercing through it and drawing some blood.
but he could care less.
here he was,
sixteen years old and faced with a task not even the grown men around him could go through with.
with the exception of fenrir greyback but...
he's not much of a man.

draco knew y/n well enough.
he knew she was a sixth year like him,
with unconventional beauty that sent all the hormonal teens around them wild.
she was the girl you sought after,
wishing and praying you could claim her,
only to have those dreams crushed.
draco had seen it plenty of times before.
the romantic gestures of the boys that ended in her pressing a friendly kiss to their cheek.
she left them behind,
dejected.
draco never experienced it firsthand,
while it was true she was beautiful and simply desirable,
he was much like her;
preferred to be alone.

draco found her at a table,
distanced from two students but close enough that they could access her if needed.
and just as he approached her,
the gryffindor girl showed y/n her paper.
"do you mind?"
y/n laid her book down,
smiled,
and nodded her head.
"of course not."
she then took the girls essay into her hands,
letting her eyes scan it and edit it as lightly as possible.
once she was done,
she handed it back.
"there. you're only missing two important spells but i wrote them there on the side for you."
y/n then turned to face draco,
her dazzling smile stunning him just a bit.
he could see the appeal clearly now.
"malfoy. good to see you."
"i need help passing herbology."
"i can help with that. would you like to join now?"
he looked around the all too crowded library and allowed his reflexive grimace to pin itself on his face.
"no..."
"would you feel better meeting in private?"
he could only nod.
"right. after dinner then, we'll meet in the greenhouse. sound good?"
he gave her a final nod then left the library,
completely humiliated.
a tutor.
a bloody tutor.

y/n did as promised and waited around in the greenhouse, with permission of course, and danced around the plants that swayed with the wind.
"y/n?"
draco's cold voice echoed.
"over here."
he came into view,
watching as y/n watered the plants with upmost care.
"how typical. the ravenclaw girl tutoring everyone and saving the day,"
he spat rather angrily.
she stopped for a split second to catch a look at him,
"and how typical of the slytherin boy, needing the tutoring and blaming the world for his problems."
draco scoffed and inched closer to her,
just close enough to catch the faintest whiff of her perfume that somehow smelled just right despite the dead, dirty plants around them.
"anyways, where do you want to start?"
draco raised an eyebrow,
"aren't you supposed to tell me what we're doing?"
"no,"
she giggled mockingly,
"where would you like to begin? any specific area you have trouble in? or any plant you're interested in learning?"
he couldn't believe his ears.
"no, not at all. this class is useless."
she nodded and picked up a potted plant with beady eyes,
"right. then we'll start here."
***
draco found himself facing y/n whose eyes were much too concentrated on the plant before her.
though he admired her determination,
he found himself completely bored.
"do you know this one?"
without a second thought,
he answered.
"alihotsy."
"exactly. used to...?"
"send one into hysterics."
she nodded with a proud smile,
only she was proud of him and not herself.
"good! you're learning. see, it's not so hard, is it? just a little studying here and there."
"i don't have time to study."
she nodded,
careful not to pry on his personal life,
"i see. quidditch and all, i know."
draco avoided her eye,
worried she could see the fear ringing his once happy eyes.
but she didn't bother,
she only kept her attention on the plants around.
is this why everyone is so attracted to her?
the appeal was becoming clearer with each study session.
her lack of prying,
her impeccable knowledge that seemed to outshine the rest of her housemates,
her shining beauty,
her enthralling laugh.
god,
you're becoming like every other lovesick, idiotic bloke.
