y/n watched in astonishment as cedric diggory unloaded years worth of sweets and trinkets onto his dorm bed,
followed by a sight of content.
"that's insane."
"how?"
"all of these girls have asked you to the ball!"
"oh, yeah."
y/n laughed then picked up a magicked card that sung to the tune of "when i see you smile" by bad english.
"when i see you smile, i see a ray of light."
it sang loudly.
y/n watched as the heart drawn onto the page beat as though it were alive,
with the words "cedric" etched inside of it in gold letters.
y/n giggled and looked up to meet a blushing cedric diggory.
"she's got the right idea, you know. you've got an amazing smile."
cedric laughed and gently tossed her a box of chocolates that fell perfectly into her lap.
"what's this? i don't want your secondhand chocolates. girls are sneaking love potions into them now."
"really?"
cedric asked with wide eyes,
clearing a space on his bed to sit next to y/n.
she nodded.
"desperate times call for desperate measures."
he chuckled and shook his head,
watching as she opened the top of it to reveal the sorts of chocolates she loved.
"i bought those for you. so, no worries about love potion."
"you bought them?"
"yeah. you like them, don't you?"
"i love them. thank you."
she pressed a gentle kiss to his cheeks that made his face flush with a deep shade of red.
"so, who's asked you to the ball?"
cedric asked,
desperate to steer the conversation away from him.
"nobody important, really."
"yeah, right. tell me."
y/n smiled but shrugged softly.
"promise you won't laugh?"
"promise."
"okay..i haven't been asked yet."
cedric found the news certainly stunning.
a fine girl like y/n,
with ravishing looks and a mind so sharp,
you often found yourself at a loss for words.
she was amusing,
and it was nearly impossibly not to laugh around her.
you couldn't help it;
her smile was much too beautiful to not mirror.
"you're not serious,"
he finally managed to say.
"are you really surprised?"
with full certainty,
he replied,
"yes."
y/n shrugged and swallowed the last bit of chocolate,
leaving only the sweet residue behind on her fingers.
"who knows. it's still early days."
cedric couldn't quite figure out why he was so surprised that the boys of hogwarts weren't lining up at y/n's door to take her to the ball.
they should be.
he thought,
y/n's amazing!
did no other boys find a flutter in their core when
y/n stepped into the room?
did none of their smiles suddenly widen when she spoke?
cedric felt his heart race a little faster at these thoughts.
of course they don't!
i'm the one with a crush on her!
cedric moved his attention from the sparkling bracelet on the bed to his favorite view:
the glow in y/n's eyes.
it was suddenly so clear as to why no other girls could spark an interest him.
y/n was the only girl his heart sought after.
it was then he decided that no amount of gifts could equate to the company of the girl by his side.
he would be the one to take her to the ball,
it was only right.
"you're oddly silent. are you okay?"
y/n asked with the turn of her head,
which she often did when she asked a question.
cedric smiled,
feeling completely overwhelmed by his admiration for her,
and nodded.
"never been better, l/n."
***
it was all set.
cedric would accompany y/n to a picnic he set up in the soft grass of the school to watch the sunset,
where he would then cast a simple spell to make the clouds in the sky above ask the question:
"will you go to the ball with me?"
he couldn't stop smiling as he walked from class to class.
he was to the brim with excitement,
and he was positive he'd blow it soon if he didn't gain control of himself.
"diggory!"
y/n called out at the end of the day,
a smile so bright and wide that cedric found himself beaming as well.
"guess what?"
"what?"
"fred weasley asked me to the ball!"
cedric felt his heart drop to the lowest point of his stomach.
it seemed nearly too cruel that the universe would play this against him so suddenly.
but watching her dance around with excitement,
because "someone finally asked me!"
he knew he couldn't ruin this for her.
cedric kept his smile genuine,
considering he was truly happy for her,
and nudged her shoulder.
"that's great, l/n. you're gonna have an amazing time."
"i need you to teach me how to dance."
cedric laughed soft and knitted his eyebrows together.
"you're not serious?"
"i'm horrible at it! please?"
with a final breath,
cedric nodded his head and agreed to teach her.
y/n let out a giggle of excitement,
then wrapped her arms around cedric to hug him in an attempt to let some of the excitement loose.
"oh, thank you cedric! you're the best!"
he returned the hug with a little less enthusiasm,
but the same amount of love that emerged from the depths of his heart.
cedric looked out to the yard and remembered his picnic.
even if it wasn't as romantic as he'd planned it to be anymore,
there was no need to let it go to waste.
"would you like to have a picnic with me?"
he asked,
smiling down at her all the same.
there was no amount of wrong in the world that could waver the love cedric felt for y/n.
"of course! i'd love to."
