Chapter 31 Two truths and a lie

"The most important things are the hardest to say, because words diminish them."

      -Stephen King

“You should eat.” Alex whispered looking at me.  It was around three in the morning and we were both cross-legged on the cot, a plate of food separating us.

“I don't feel like eating.” I whispered back, looking at the plate.  Truthfully I was starving.  But I couldn't eat after what had happened earlier.

I had just sat there speechless.  My parents were dead.  I'm an orphan.  How could Franco be my father?

Because he isn't.  He already lied about his death who knows what else he is lying about?

And what did he want me to do? Help him overthrow the company?  That was impossible.  Right?

“You're a valuable asset to this company Alice.  If we have you on our side we will win. With Alex I have some chance of bringing the company down.  With you though, our success is guaranteed” Franco continued.  And then I got pissed off.

Turning to Alex I yelled, “You! You knew about all of this!  And you still played along?” I was angry and hurt.  How could he do this to me?

The worst part was that he just looked back at me with a blank expression, it was like I had never spoken.

“Alice.  Control yourself.  Let me explain.” Franco said.  I had no choice but to obey.

“Alex is just a pawn in my plan.  Honestly you shouldn't even blame him.  If the positions were reversed then I know you would have done what he did.”

He was right.  I wouldn't hesitate to follow Franco.  I knew I shouldn't blame Alex but then again, I don't see him standing up for himself either.  I needed to talk to that kid.

“Alice.  Pay attention.” Franco said.  “I know the company is bad.  What it does to children is terrible and I want it to stop.  Can't you see, my logic is undeniable.  But in order to stop this child abomination we must take the company down.”

“I know you are hesitant and all this may seem like utter bullshit right now but I have a proposition.”  He said with a glint in his eyes.  This did not sound good at all.

“Work for me.  Go with Alex on a mission.  See how it is.  If you don't like it we would let you walk free.  If you do like it you can join us.” He said.  Like hell he would let me walk free.

I couldn't think right.  I couldn't even understand what he just said because my mind was spinning so I just nodded my head and hoped for the best.
